Please can someone offer me some advise, I am on fairly ok wages. I clear approx £2000 per month, my marriage has recently ended and I have 4 young children. My rent is £1450 and when I include council tax and basic bills there’s little left.

I’ve applied for UC and been told I’m not entitled to anything, are any of you in a similar situation and receive UC?

Thank you

How old are the children, presumably you get child benefit for them as well as your wages? Also what gender are they?

Benefits are based on your income bitnyour expenditure.

By my calculation you could get up to £1604.57. However that calculation is based on your receiving full rent element.t. If you have extra bedrooms to what they consider you need or your private rent exceeds the local housing allowance or your area then they may not give you full rent element and you are expected to make up the difference. have you actually received your first Uc statement yet ? I ask this because elements are often left off so are wrong. Also could there be a problem that your ex is still on the tenancy and so they are only giving you half the rent element - this is also a common problem and can be rectified by declaring an ' untidy tenancy'. Lastly if you own a half of a previous maritial home then they may be classing this as capital maybe ? It can be disregarded for 6 months if the house is being sold but otherwise they wont give you Uc as it would be considered capital over 16k. Perhaps seek advice from CAB if you can't identify what the problem is.

Thank you for your replies.

The children are 10,8,7 and 5 all boys.

The rent is in my name, we have no capital as we were previously renting.

The house is a 3 bed and I think roughly the housing allowance is £185 max per week, I think they’ve left the housing allowance off.

Currently my award is £77, do you think I’d get more and roughly how much a month if they include the housing allowance?

Thank you

Throw your details through this calculator...it's usually pretty accurate

I would suggest putting your name down on the council/social housing process, you may find weeks where there is nothing to bid upon, but other weeks a few. It’s worth trying as you could end up with a new build social house for £200 per week
