DP and The Gas Bill.

We live in a semi 3bed not a new build but 60’s so not ancient.. I believe it’s well insulated (haven’t ventured into a wall cavity or the loft to check) but the gas bill always seems high. Heatings set to 17c during the day with a quick burst at home time. Proper fire if it gets too cold downstairs. Combined gas and electric was £140 last month so he’s on the war path if I so much as glance at a raidator too long.

Half of the problem is the massive floor to ceiling stone kitchen (I swear that rooms never warm) where he stands with the back door open and his obsession with condensation leaving the bathroom window open for hours so let’s all the heat out.

Smart meters being fitted on Friday, I’ve even bought a window vac to suck the condensation up.. you’ll guess how often it’s out Envy.

How do you cut a down on the gas side of the bill/keep the house warm at the same time? What’s a normal monthly gas/combined bill?

I'm £150 for gas and £50 for leccy.

Shut the bathroom door when the window is open.

My tariff with british gas ends next week and will go up from £90 a month to £125 for gas and electric combined i have managed to get it down to £70 a month by changing to bulb
We are also having a new boiler fitted next month as ours is ancient so hoping this might make a difference to future bills

If you open the bathroom window you keep the bathroom door shut to prevent moisture in the rest of the house and keep the heat loss just the the bathroom. You be better getting an extractor fan for the bathroom

3 bed 1960s semi here. Wall insulation but can’t have loft insulation (long story) so lose a fair bit of heat through the roof. Our combined bill each month is £120 (about £45 on gas and £75 on electricity) this is because teenager has a PlayStation addiction and my tumble dryer is on every day :(

You would save money simply having a dual fuel tariff, direct debit and paper free.
The smart meter will probably demonstrate higher usage when your DP is around opening doors.
As people have said get dehumidifiers, they are cheap to run and add a little extra heat too.
My usage, dual fuel last month was £53 for a 3 bedsemi and I have the heating on .higher than you.The age of the boiler may be a factor too but not that much.

Replacing that crap thermostat with one that lets you set different temps at different times would seem to be a winner.

I'm using a Hive thermostat, you set the times and temps on a web page (or phone app) and you can have as many different heating timeslots as you like. Cost £120 and our gas chap put it on for £20 while servicing the boiler, paid for itself in four months over last winter.

Being able to hit the boost button while you're sat on the sofa under a blanket is such a joy!

Your DH is a dumbass if he's running the bathroom heating and leaving the window open, that'll definitely be costing you pounds a day. Kitchen likewise, though probably not as badly. Please at least say he's closing the inner doors on both...!

We have an old boiler and 1930s 3 bed semi. We've had new insulation put in the loft. Our recommended direct debit is £70 duel a month. We pay more so we have a credit through winter. Summer bills are lower around £40 a month. Winter it doubles and in very cold months over £100. Partner would happily have heating on less. But it is a couple hours a day morning/night. If I'm home it's longer. It takes a good few hours to warm through the house. We don't heat at night though.

We pay £88 pcm for gas and electricity combined. That’s a 3 bed semi and we’re with eon. It’s a 1960s ex local authority house and we’re pretty well insulated which helps.

£60 a month for both here, little old stone cottage, mid terrace but fairly well insulated in the roof and by having houses either side. I find we don't need the heating on much, just put it on when we feel chilly and then off again but that's usually evenings for an hour and an hour first thing. But we are in poverty so I try and be careful with it.
I think keeping it on all the time is your issue. And obviously doors/windows being left open.
