Lets talk about them. Some are better than others. What is good about them at this time of year? What bargains have you got recently?

Dvd’s 3 for £1. Got Home Alone, Surviving Christmas and Freaky Friday.
We have Sky, Netflix and Prime but sometimes a DVD is just easiest!

What is cheaper carboot, charity shop, ebay or other? I can't be bothered trawling through all the tat at a carboot. I usually get ripped off in ebay. Charity shops seem to be my best option.

I get the bus to the 'nicer' part of town to trawl the charity shops. This time of year is great for children's toys as lots of people are clearing out for Christmas. Same goes for the clothes.

Other than that we use fb marketplace, same thing happens there.

We have managed to get ds a kitchen with food and utensils, Melissa and Doug activity boards, wooden garage with cars/car transporter, play tent and tunnel, baby and stroller, several 'that's not my' books and a selection of puzzles. All for under £50. Quids in.

I bought a spice rack for the inside of my cupboard door today for £4.99. Was planning on ordering one online. Brand new and £10.99 on Amazon so I was pretty pleased!

I got a great Christmas jumper from Barnardos today for a child. Very happy with that.
I also got a lovely Christmas 👗

MissPhonic · 25/11/2018 01:08

I got the perfect cardigan (exactly the style I have been looking for in the shops for months) unworn, £24.99 new as tags still on, £6.99 in Oxfam in a naice suburb. I've had many compliments already.
Also a barely worn fat face fairisle winter jumper for £9.99. It's so warm and a gorgeous maroon colour.

I got a £1.50 jacket from Top Shop - love it.

I give loads though. Hope the person who accidentally got my MaxMara top is enjoying it...

HomeEdRocks18 · 25/11/2018 22:39

Brand new ballgown for £10, still had the labels on.
Orchard toys games £2 each
Three seater sofa £5

Ragwort · 25/11/2018 22:45

Brand new White Company jumper, £8.

I manage a charity shop & the quality of some of our donations is just incredible, this week a whole box of beautifully presented Monsoon & Boden designs. Regularly get designer labels given to us.

We also get a lot of dross that has to straight to the tip .....

I tend to buy all my cookery/baking books from charity shops. Always in excellent condition, great selection and a lot cheaper than buying off Amazon etc..

BendoverK · 08/12/2018 17:45

love charity shops. Last week I bought a mint condition EWM red coat for £6. Also a set of fairy tale books for £3 and a Next coat £3 that will keep as presents for my dd. Last year we had very little money and I bought a load of board games that filled a bin bag for £20.

NotScrewingUpNow · 08/12/2018 19:18

justalittlebitsad · 10/12/2018 22:52

Four books for £2. Two were brand new cookery books which I will give as presents (yay!), one was a brand new fiction book (another present) and one was a cookery book I have been after for a while.

95% of my clothes are from charity shops and I've never been better dressed. Cashmere knitwear has been my latest best buy. I tend to go to nice areas with nice shops but sometimes get gems in unexpected places.

There are bargains on Facebook but I find the whole arranging collection etc a bit of a drag.

I got awesome stuff at car boots over the summer, kids toys and Wallis clothing £1 a piece.

Ah I love a bargain, its addictive

kafkesque · 11/12/2018 11:26

The charity shops near me are getting more expensive. I have had to resort to the tip re-use shop to get my fix, as things are definitely cheaper there. They sell different things too. (There are only so many good quality dresses one needs.) So I have bought myself a Singer hand turning sewing machine. Bargain at £10 from the tip re-use shop.

The charity shops have less stock due to all the new Christmas stock for sale, such as cards. No problem here with the tip re-use shop.

I was hoping it would be better stock with the run up to xmas in both locations but have not really noticed.

I have three tip reuse shops near me Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire have just started up but Buckinghamshire one has been there a few years so is really established.

Buckinghamshire one is a charity one so run by volunteers who get first dibs on stuff. I'm sure it must be worthwhile volunteering there. There are enough scraps for us mere mortals though, for it still to be good. It has been that successful. It's disgusting what people through away when others in the world have so little.

I think it is a really good idea making money for the charity or council (especially when they need money for social care ect) and good re-cycling too less to go to landfill. Nigerians and East Europeans for example fill up container loads and send stuff back to their native countries.

I wish the government would do something about recycling so that even less ends up being wasted. Somebody mentioned the retailers have a second hand section or paying for the recycling - would really change things.

There bestsellers are furniture. But there is everything-records, garden tools, toys you name it.

I find the ones in my town are stupidly expensive but the ones further out that have sorting depos really reasonable in fact rather cheap. The best ever charity shops though are on Guernsey everything I picked up was designer.
