So, for next year's holiday, I am going to try and save as much as possible up front, rather than dipping into my meagre savings.

I do budget and manage to save a small amount each month, but was hoping to make more of an effort and create a separate savings pot.

I am ashamed to say that I spend too much on unnecessary stuff; books and magazines, stationery, wine, coffees on the go, treats here and there that soon add up. I also buy far too much food and have far too many toiletries, loads of make up and cupboards full of shoes, handbags and clothes.

The decluttering is another thread entirely, which I will deal with separately.

For the moment, I plan to use up the excess food and toiletries stash.

Would anyone like to join me, to share tips?

I have three opened boxes of breakfast cereal and will not be buying more until they are all used up.

Ditto the six bottles of hair shampoo, five shower gels, eight bars of soap, two drawers full of makeup and an undersink cupboard crammed full of cleaning products Blush.

The only things I need to shop for are fresh bread, milk, fruit and veg, but will try and eke out my supplies until next weekend by doing a bit of meal planning to use everything up first.

I'm going to start by baking some bread and a rice dish for lunch with some of yesterday's leftovers. I have eggs and tinned tuna for lunches on other days and a couple of freezer meals from some batch cooking a couple of weeks ago.

Pears and nectarines in the fruit bowl are going in the fridge to make them last longer, to have with morning cereals.

I have a travel mug and eleven books at the side of the bed to start on, so no takeaway coffees or magazines for a while.

I don't want to go into specifics, but will give a rough estimate of savings made.

I know there are other threads on here in the same vein, but I did not want to hijack them.

Thanks for reading!

Oh, and I've recently reviewed phone and broadband, gas and electricity and insurances and am on the best deals I can find.

Bread is in the oven. Think I will have a ploughman's for lunch and the rice/leftovers combo tonight.

Generally going to cut back on the wine as well. Water and squash today Smile.

This is something i def need to do am very similar in having multiples of things. I often buy things for no real reason and am not sure why,i think for me maybe its a lack of confidence in some form and by having nice "things" it glosses over it. I had a baby last year and am starting to carve a new career and go a different direction to what i am trained in so need to save not spend! I hate to think i am materialistic but maybe i am with this need so that is sobering enough to want to change,my happiest times have been in simple plain comfy clothes on the beach natural hair and minimal make up so why cant i stop looking for a dress/bag/shoes etc that i dont have the lifestyle for - challenge accepted Smile

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 14:19

Thanks littleHen. It's true, I find myself unable to resist supermarket offers, even though my cupboards are already full.

I need to have a stern word with myself Smile.

Same with makeup, I seem to have been on a quest for the perfect lipstick forever. Time to get rid of all the out of date ones and stop buying more.

The ploughman's was lovely. I have plenty of baking supplies, so might try a few things out this week.

And teabags, so many different kinds in the cupboard.

My plan is to switch to black tea when the milk runs out, until I do a (sensible) shop next weekend. I have peppermint and some weak supermarket own brand (I can't drink tea without milk unless it's very weak, so the own brand ones are perfect for that).

I have soya milk on my cereals, not for health or dietary reasons, but because I like the taste and I can buy the long-life versions, so have plenty. It's awful in tea or coffee though.

Found an unopened packet of ground coffee, so will get the cafetiere out too, for my 'on the go' drinks.

I love getting takeaways latte, back in January I did the no spend. I found getting sachets of latte from the supermarket was about £2 per box, which last me a week / opposed to 5x coffee at £2.50+ each

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 15:33

@ivykaty, that's great. Without going into great detail, I reckon I could save around £50 per month on takeaway coffees, magazines and the odd bought sandwich, which is shocking Shock.

I do make my own lunches these days, but was in the habit of just popping into M&S in my lunch break for a sandwich and something for tea. I've stopped that now, but replaced that bad habit with a 'supermarket bulk buy' one.

It's not on really. I don't like to think of what I've spent unnecessarily over the years Sad.

Ooh love a bit of baking for some reason my oven is rubbish at round cakes but good at loafs,i often get reduced fruit like blueberrys and rasps freeze them and chuck them in the cake mix bit of icing on top lovely! Cant beat home made cake on sunday eve clean pjs and fresh bedding! I need to stop browsing ebay for "bargains" that either dont fit or are just crap!

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 20:34

Yes, I have plenty of baking supplies too, littleHen.

Fruit in the freezer. Dried fruit, nuts, ginger. I was going to make some scones, they keep for quite a while, nice with a cuppa. Also stops me buying even more biscuits.

I feel ridiculous mentioning all the cupboards full of stuff I have, so wasteful unless I get my act together and use everything up.

I suppose it is a good way to use up eggs, butter, flour etc.

We need to stay focussed and put our credit cards away Grin.

I need this too! I am such a fritterer because I love books, beauty products and trinkets. So rubbish at sticking to my budget.

littleHen84 · 15/07/2018 20:51

Got to love a trinket! I still get v excited if i see a gift shop if we go to visit somewhere, maybe my partner could give me pocket money like my mum did to reign it in!

SyrilSneer · 15/07/2018 20:52

Oh LittleHen I love a gift shop 😂

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 20:53

All welcome here Syril. Feel free to post any confessions, tips or suggestions!

Well the thread has already inspired me to move the “leftover” money from my wages to my savings account. I recently set a budget but it’s hard to take it seriously when I know I still have excess money. Suppose I shouldn’t check out my Space NK basket then 😂

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 22:12

Are your purchases wants or needs, Syril?

I see nothing wrong in buying necessities, but only you can decide that.

I've just emptied my Amazon basket; I don't really need any more notebooks and pens. So thank you for the prompt, that's a great tip Smile.

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 22:16

Forgot to say, over £40 of unnecessary stationery items in my Amazon basket, so I'm going to count that as a saving too Grin.

OP posts:
SyrilSneer · 15/07/2018 22:28

Well done! I love stationery too.

Cultofpersonality · 15/07/2018 22:38

Urgh why didn’t I see this before I clicked buy now on those crochet items 😳😳
Tomorrow though, I shall be leaving my purse at home! I definitely don’t need to pop into Asda on my way to work or that can of fizzy pop from the vending machine at work! 🙈

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 22:48

Thank you Syril.

Come and join us Cult. Lots of support here.

I have a large wool stash Blush but am slowly using it up. I'm sure I will have enough to do all the Christmas crafts I have planned so will NOT be getting any more this year.

Pinkroseuk · 15/07/2018 22:52

I'm also trying to use up all the cupboard odds and ends! Some I have been successful with already like the 7 bottles of washing up liquid I had in various scents! Onto the tins now... some r a bit too out of date too I think... 2011?!

23ASwanHill · 15/07/2018 22:55

Hi Pink, that's some serious washing up liquid habit you have!

Great to have more like minded people on the thread Smile.

I love a no spend week or so. I just had a week of annual leave but no money to do anything so wehad to be inventive!

We had a bit of a tight spot recently and had to use up stuff in the cupboards /freezer. We had some interesting "meals". We try to do this every 1-2 months for stock rotation in the cupboard anyway.

I also baked some plain fairy cakes with some old margarine I found at the back of the fridge Blush They tasted lovely and were a nice snack which didn't last long! Grin

I like to use up any loyalty points* (subway/boots/Tesco boost for restaurant vouchers). Last week was tough waiting for payday, so I redeemed my subway points for a salad, got face wipes and a drink with some of my boots points and used one of our Tesco boost vouchers at cafe rouge for a free meal (just pay a tip as the service was great).

The cats normally have Royal Canin biscuits which are £20+ a bag for 4 kg (using vouchers at pets at home, but we didn't have any vouchers), so we bought Iams (on offer) 3kg for £10. They don't seem to mind and it's a nice change for them. They refuse whiskas and go cat. Hmm
*
Although I save my nectar points for doubling up at Christmas!

Not sure what's happened with the formatting but I'm not re-writing as I'm on my phone BlushGrin

FiveShelties · 16/07/2018 06:58

I also have lots of stuff - stupid amounts of cleaning stuff, cosmetics and clothes. Over the last 4 years we have done 2 international moves and had huge clearouts and 'use up stuff' months. But here I am again with cupboards full an we have only been here for a year. I just cannot resist a bargain - but these 'bargains' are there all the time, so I don't know why I keep buying stuff.

I would love to join you and plan to keep a record of everything I buy - which I hope will be a very short list!

23ASwanHill · 16/07/2018 07:28

Welcome tor. That's a good tip about using up loyalty points, thank you.

'bargains' are there all the time, so I don't know why I keep buying stuff

Exactly this Five. And I know that the shops won't run out if I don't buy stuff now, but I need to stop doing it.

I have just recently got a Monzo card. Where I give myself a budget each week and put it on that. I did start just drawing out cash and only using that, but it was difficult when I was paying at the pump for petrol. I've managed to save so much more, it's like a little challenge not to go over my weekly allowance!

Tiredofit · 16/07/2018 09:38

Can I join you? We are in Scotland so are two weeks in to the seven week summer holiday and just about spent up already. We need to find lots of free activities to do and take food with us. We were £42 for the cinema and a Burger King and that was using what nectar points I had!

I have a fair bit of freezer food we can use up and quite a lot of cupboard bits so will try just to buy fresh stuff on Thursday this week and stay out of the shops until then.
