Can't get on top of everything

One of my NYR was to sort my finances. It's the 2nd and I've just had to fork out £200 for 3 new tyres...I could cry, I don't have the money left in my account so I've taken the last credit card up to its max. Had to put petrol in the car to get to work on Friday.

DH not really working at the moment as his business went under last year. It all feels a bit hopeless. I work part time and it's not enough to support us all, I put more money into the house/bills as I work and my 3 DC live with us.

Don't know how to turn it around. I get full tax credits and am looking to take on another part time job but that will surely cut down my tax credits.

I feel hopeless.

I don't think it's fair you taking on another job when your oh isn't working can he get a job somehow? Are you able to make credit card payments at all? could you try paying off the most expensive debt first and working through each card after that? Have you got a budget of you income and outgoings?

The first thing to address is your DH. My own DH runs his own small business, and we often review how it's going, and we often talk about what would happen if it began to no longer be profitable. The understanding is that he would immediately scale it back to be at the maximum part-time and take any sort of paid employment to keep up his contribution to household expenses. It is likely he would take work as a supermarket delivery driver, even though he is highly qualified in his field and one of the best in the UK at his particular job. Just as I have always said that if things are rough, I'm not averse to cleaning toilets to keep the wolf from the door, so he will turn his hand to anything to do the same.
You must get to a point where you can ask the credit card company to freeze the card and make a payment plan with them, so as to stop it incurring interest. But you can't do this until you can get through the month on your actual earnings. Is there anything you can sell to give your current account a cash injection to get through the month?
(I've just looked at the pile of toiletry sets, make-up bits and pieces, body shop shower gel multipacks, I got for Xmas - none of which I'll use - and I reckon if I put them on the local FB selling site labelled 'buy next year's Xmas presents now as a job lot' I'd get £40 for them. So be quite open minded as you walk round the house looking for stuff!)

Would you get more tc if he moved out?

What does your dh do to contribute to your life and your dc's?

Have you done out list of all expenses for everyone and everything to see if it's possible to cut back?

Kingsclerelass · 07/01/2018 22:37

All the supermarkets seem to be recruiting delivery drivers at the moment. Your dh could do temporary work while he sorts himself out.

With your dh unemployed and you working p/t you should be eligible for tax credits. Look into this. tax credits

Mumnet jobs page

You dh should look for Temporary work until his business picks up or he should look for a p/t job which fits in around his business. It's important that he gets a regular income stream.
