Hello!! I am trying to be better with my money and I was wondering what is a reasonable weekly budget for food for a family of 3? Assuming all other bills are budgeted for. Family is me and 2 DS 10yrs and 11yrs.

Thanks!

I spend about 60 for me and 2 dds who are 2 and 6 . I’d say maybe 75 for you as I can imagine they eat lots at that age .

MrsPear · 29/12/2017 12:08

I’m aiming for 75 a week for 2 adults and 2 children age5 and 8. Meal plan is the key. That and cutting the crap eg fizzy drinks, crisps etc
Don’t forget if you haven’t done online shop you can often get codes for money off when sign up. I’ve used a £12 one this week.

I aim for £80 per week_. 3 adults I cat and 2 Guinea pigs . mostly aldi and have a separate cash purse so its easier to keep an eye on .. I add £80 each Monday ..

That’s a good idea. I was thinking of starting to take out cash for supermarket shop weekly, and stick to that. Just paying by card means I don’t really think about what I spend which is prob around £125 per week for 4 of us, me and 3 kids but includes 2 teenage boys!

May50 · 30/12/2017 09:15

I’m going to go with £80 a week I think to try. notmrscookie does your £80 include things like toilet roll and washing liquid , or is that solely food?

notmrscookie · 30/12/2017 09:55

Yes to loo rolls . I have a separate purse with 50 a month for toiletries or things that are cheaper in savers and wilko . Have a teenaged son so like certain hairspray and deorants etc .

Ok thanks. I will start New Year. I am too much of an impulse buyer. I’m sure I can halve my spending!

makeitpink · 30/12/2017 14:38

@notmrscookie that's a fab idea!! I picked up a huge thing of loo rolls for £3 in proper job. I usually buy Andrex at around £5-6. I have signed up for the Tesco delivery saver, £7 per month for unlimited deliveries and I got jan free and used my small amount of Clubcard vouchers to pay for Feb and March. I find when I shop online I spend less. I'm trying to stick to between £60-80 per week. This includes toiletries however may do a fortnightly run to wilko or something??

£70 a week for three adults and two kids at Aldi.
Some weeks it goes over, but other weeks comes under, so £70 is the average. Any money under is transferred into a savings account attached my main account.

makeitpink · 31/12/2017 07:07

Well this week came in at just under £60. Would've been less but DP wasted a whole bottle of persil Angry. Trying to run the freezer down and use up what's there so hopefully a few cheaper weeks ahead!

I shop at a mixture of Aldi and sainsbury & Tesco but average out at £60 a week for three adults.

We barely eat meat though, one meat item per week maximum. I cook a lot of meals that are pretty basic but flavoursome
toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/shakshuka/

I use leftovers with pasta the following day

Easy store cupboard food, so stock up for the month on both the above

www.nigella.com/recipes/pasta-with-anchovy-sauce

With these meals in the cupboard for the month that’s three dishes sorted each week

I’ll then make meat balls with tomato sauce and freeze half

Cheap but flavoursome eats
