Anybody wondering if they can stop buying clothes in 2018?

Nobody really notices if my boots are new or not. I have everything I need and most of it is classic and not too high fashion so I could definitely go a year without buying clothes and still have something fairly nice for any occasion I might have to attend from job interview to wedding to down to relaxing on my sofa at home.

I think I'm going to aim to not buy anything for the first four months of the year. See how that goes.

I would like to move to a better house one day.

I cut right back on buying clothes for me last year and it was surprisingly easy.

Over the year I bought:

I pair of trainers (to replace old ones with holes in the soles)
Some new socks (replacing old worn out socks)
2 pairs of jeans (replacing old worn out pairs)
I pair of sandals (frivolous reduced sandals that I saw when I was buying the new trainers)

Plus 3 new tops when I was given some vouchers for the clothes shop.

Much less than in previous years!

I want to do it for exactly the same reason.

I will report back in April!

I’d like to join in. Unless I need any smarter clothes for work ( currently job seeking) I’m ok for now.

ememem84 · 27/12/2017 07:19

I tried to do this last year but got pregnant so had to buy maternity clothes.

This year I’m going to aim for only essential clothes spends.

I’m on maternity leave at present so am wearing my casual clothes not my work ones. I go back to work in May so in October will need to buy tights. And maybe a smart coat for work next winter.

But any frivolous spends will be done with vouchers. I have about £300 in total for various places.

I use swap shops or Vinted. I clear out my clothes that I no longer wear and get new to me clothes

My biggest weakness is clothes. I am so thrifty in lots of other ways, and still save a fair amount (I am lucky, I know) with a good pension but could save more. I do not need more beautiful dresses/suits/vintage everything.

I will join you on this. I already know I will need to buy a few more pairs of nude tights though asap!

chickenowner · 31/01/2018 10:44

I'll join you too!

I'm only going to buy new (or new to me) if I need to replace something. For example I may need a new tracksuit as the trousers of my current one are wearing very thin and may soon go into holes.

Otherwise I have a lot of lovely clothes and just do not need any new ones!

I started doing this and it really is doable! I had a problem as I used to buy clothes to make myself feel better, but I knew it was getting ridiculous when the railing in my cupboard broke because of the weight of the all the clothes. DXX

Since october I've only bought one belt for 5.99 from H&M and honestly nothing else.

madamefraser · 01/03/2018 11:30

I'm the same as Orangecake I do buy clothes to make me feel better, when I should find other ways of self care! This year I have set myself a target of not buying any new clothes ( apart from undies pjs etc!) to cut down on my spending.. I think it will be ok, apart from jeans...I've lost a lot of weight recently and always find it difficult getting them to fit.
Where is a good place to sell clothes apart from eBay ? What is Vinted ?

Doingitalone · 02/03/2018 22:47

Joining. I have a good amount due to being mostly pregnant or losing pregnancy weight over past number of years.
Have some vouchers which I’ll try save for the summer time.
I’ll try take it month at a time maybe....

I don't like lothes shopping anyway so had recently decided to actually use up those I already have in my wardrobe.I did nearly succumb to buying a new dress the other day as we were going to a friends 'big' birthday ,and a lot of the other women spend a lot more on their clothes, and always seem to wear something new. Then I thought who would really notice the dress I wore was one I wore to another meal a year ago.And did I care ?I still felt nice, but also realised I felt a bit of an outsider. Our income has gone down significantly due to DHs health problems ,a lot of our friends seem to be much better off,a lot of talk of holidays etc and stuff we just can't afford at the moment. But then I realised I'm still very happy with relatively simple things, and would prefer to treat myself with a new book than clothes I don't really need.
