Being evicted

I have just received two months notice from my landlord as he wants my flat back.
Anyone know what happens next ?
I have 3 teens at home and no savings and not enough annual income to satisfy the credit checks to rent somewhere new.
I'm so shocked I'd planned to be here for at least the next 5 years.

Phone Shelter- they can advise you. Also your local council who I think have a scheme to help private tenants with deposits etc. Not sure of the facts though so would make Shelter my first port of call.

just so you know the process:

if you don't leave at the end of the notice period, the landlord then has to go to court. This takes time.
If the landlord has all the paperwork right, the court will grant a possession order. This will a date for you to leave.
If you don't go then, the landlord then has to apply for bailiffs. Only when the bailiff comes must you leave. You will be kept informed of all this, there won't be knocks on doors in the middle of the night.

if you are in London the whole process can take up to a year.
You will be liable for the costs (£600 - £2k) although this is rarely enforced. You commit no civil or criminal offence by not leaving until the bailiff arrives. You must of course continue to pay your rent until eviction.

why am I telling you this? Because if you want council accommodation, they will almost certainly tell you to stay until the bailiff comes. To do otherwise means you have made yourself voluntarily homeless (yes, I know...) and they will wash their hands of you.

it is a rubbish system caused by housing shortage.

I hate uncertainty so this is going to be a very difficult time especially with teens who are settled here.
