So far nsd. Watching the olympics. Dh is painting. Enjoying the cross country.

We have £71 in our joint ac to last until 19th. Our now tv subscription vouchers have lapsed and we've started paying for it. Aah.

Cancelling subscription. We have Netflix again so will catch up on Netflix shows and then reinstate now tv later.

ipso I love my slow cooker. It was a joke wedding gift from family friends. Best gift ever.

allthebestplease · 08/08/2016 15:11

I succumbed to little person's demands and bought an electric toothbrush for £4.50...but she has been brushing her teeth constantly since coming home, so that's a result!
Spent £2 on a board game from the charity shop, we played it just now, but I reckon it wont see the light of day again and will end up back at the charity shop - oh well.

We used to do the cash in jar and it worked really well, especially for parking and bus fare, but we've been lazy lately, so will start it up again.

Colliefeatures · 08/08/2016 15:48

cag yes I love that idea! We never have decent change in the house and I always need it!! Especially for the bus, milk & town centre carparks. I get caught short every week and I never learn!
I have a decent jar too Grin that's my main August goal now

ItalianWiking84 · 08/08/2016 16:08

sierra lol how funny... Never knew anyone would write a book about Danish parenting... Might consider buying it just for the fun Grin

SnugglySnerd · 08/08/2016 16:13

NSD Monday - hooray!
We have a cheap Asda sc and it's great. DH did his roast chicken in it yesterday. Have never tried a risotto in it though, I like the sound of that - do you just bung all the ingredients in with some stock and leave it all day?

allthebestplease · 08/08/2016 16:18

Ok...i need your help.
Ive just worked out that on paper (in theory) we as a family should have £900 a month left over after all bills and expenses. That does not include any savings.
However, every month we over spend. We spends lots everywhere.
So if I allocate:
Food and household items £100 per week.
How on earth do I budget/allocate the rest...its £500 a month spent on god knows what????

CremeEggThief · 08/08/2016 16:27

I think you need to jot down all spends for a month to see where it's going. Then you can make a proper budget and cutbacks, Allthebest.

Spends: £33.50, on 2 coach trips put on by a local bus company. One's to Lincoln on Saturday on my own and the other's to York with DS on the 25th. I haven't been to Lincoln before and I love York, so looking forward to both. Oh and £1 on 4 chocolate bars in the shop.
I'm going to watch some Olympics now too, Em, before Pilates. I love watching it!

Heru · 08/08/2016 16:31

Someone mentioned old premium bonds way up thread. I had to sort these this year. I had to send in a change of address form and a request for an online account, both forms printed from their website. I included photocopies of my certificate s. They sent back a signature form as my signature was on file. Then they automatically sent out my winnings £25!

MaggieMcVitie · 08/08/2016 16:46

all you are very brave posting numbers...you've given me the outage to follow suit. I'll work it all out and post later. Will be very motivating I think (not to mention shamingBlush).

allthebestplease · 08/08/2016 16:55

Maggie, I feel better already for posting. And I've written a big sign for what I want to achieve:
food and wine and small household items: £400
Big household items/sorting the house and garden: £100
Clothes/toys: £100
Going out: £100
Unexpected: £100
Per month.
(savings will hopefully be my childcare payouts)

Ive added up what we spend and its food and wine from Tesco (I dont drink). Clothes and make up (I need to stop) and stuff for the house (we moved not long ago).

allthebestplease · 08/08/2016 16:57

Oh I should say that our spending on crap is about £1300 so we were always going overdrawn.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2016 16:59

All

You could set up a high interest savings account and at the beginning of every month divide your income into one account for bills like Internet, phone, electric, mortgage etc, one for food & the £500 into savings. If you need to dip in you can but obviously the idea is that you try really hard not to.

Then visit money saving expert mortgage overpayment calculator, put your details in & see how many years £500 a month takes off your mortgage. It's a really good incentive.

First direct, nationwide (cashback on nationwide accounts at the moment on topcashback) & HSBC do 6% interest savings accounts if you switch to them.

wreck we've had that happen to us too.

snuggly I would just bung everything in for risotto and stir every few hours. I love my sc for meat joints. The aldi beef joint is £6ish and so tender. You can do suet puddings in them too, a huge treacle pudding is about a £1 with aldi ingredients but so filling in the winter.

I cook ready made pies in ours too, the pastry goes crispy in them as well as conventional oven. Or you can batch cook dry pulses in them like kidney beans, freeze in portions. Much cheaper for things like butter beans than buying ready cooked.

£2.05 on ibuprofen, paracetamol and ranitidine tablets.
Recieved a £5 M&S voucher for signing up for a cc with them through moneysaving expert.

Ursulatodd · 08/08/2016 17:22

Loving all the summer slow-cooker ideas - thank you!

Sierra I painted DDs face at home before going out to a local festival on Saturday to avoid the cost! Luckily she's only 4 so she thought she looked the bees knees despite it being pretty shoddy! Also day before that when we went to the park, where I knew there was an ice-cream van, I prepped her before-hand to be super excited about having a 'special' ice-cream from the freezer when we got home --which we ate in bed -slovenly!

I'm failing miserably at NSMonday and they seem to be my most expensive day! £74.67 filling up the car with diesel Shock I almost fainted as our old, much smaller car was about £50. It did do 550 miles on the last tank though which I think is pretty good. And also £21.60 on decorating supplies at B&Q.

Sierra259 · 08/08/2016 17:53

Lsd - £6 on bread, bananas, yoghurt and blueberries. Dinner is portioned up Costco lasagne from the freezer with salad.

Planning a nice relaxing evening watching the gymnastics. DH is really not interested in sport but I've told him that for 2 weeks every 4 years, he can lump it! Blush

Colliefeatures · 08/08/2016 17:59

We need a new sofa. Our sofa is hurting my back and it's saggy. And pretty ugly too. Does anyone recommend any sofa stores other than DFS?

We don't have many of the sofa stores down here so trying them out may be tricky. I find the DFS sofas too low Blush

ipsogenix · 08/08/2016 18:21

allthebest God knows what is exactly what it's spent on. I'm the same. I find the only way is to write it all down in categories in a spreadsheet and then it suddenly becomes glaringly obvious where it all went. If you've ever done calorie counting, this is much the same.

dh liked my slow cooked chilli, so that was a bit of a win. I really like having a stainless steel slow cooker pot. It sears well and I don't need to be concerned about the non-stick chipping.

Ok, here goes...
Budgeting as follows:
£100 a week for food/groceries
£25 a week for school dinners (obv during school hols this won't apply)
£50 a week on fuel
Having taken off all bills and direct debits we SHOULD be left with £1160 a month ConfusedShockBlush

dwinnol · 08/08/2016 18:37

Wreck that's terrible! I thought that you took your chances selling on eBay? Can you leave feedback if the sale didn't go through?
Collie if you don't need the pay over 2 years option I've heard very good things about www.made.com/sofas-and-armchairs. The quality for price equation is supposed to be very good but I don't know if they have shops where you can see your choices in real life?
Not a great day for me. Met DD in town to get her glasses fitted then to Starbucks for 2 cold coffee things which was £7 and then I spotted a jacket thought the door of M&S that I somehow bought. Tsk! My budget for the week is blown. I'm disappointed in myself but I know I'd be equally gutted if I resisted and never saw the jacket again. I did this once with a Next jacket and I've never got over it.
Never mind. The rest of the week will have to to NSD's and I'll just admire the lovely jacket.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2016 18:47

Have you all checked your on the right electric tariffs?. Broadband and phone etc? Lots to be saved plus cashback on them.

Co-Op bank are still offering £150 cashback if you switch to them and pay in £850 a month. You get the money within 6 weeks.

If you have a partner and can both switch it's even better.

lifelongfrugaleer · 08/08/2016 19:09

Well my nsd didn't happen £8.40 swimming, £24 in sainsburys.

lilacclery · 08/08/2016 19:10

McNo you can't import direct from your uk bank accounts by you can import a csv file from your bank account. I will find a link for you about this but this Ynab Facebook Group is very helpful.
I haven't imported yet I just enter manually.
You can include your savings account if they are savings you don't wish to touch either create a category for what you're saving them for eg Christmas or keep them in an account that's off budget so visible on screen but money that's unavailable to budget. I do this for a couple of bigger expenses eg wood pellets/Christmas/savings for dc/ means if I run into a bigger unexpected expense I've to debate it a little & move funds before I use it.

lilacclery · 08/08/2016 19:11

I also love my slow cooker, lots of people laughed at me getting it & most of those have purchased one since

lilacclery · 08/08/2016 19:12

Also want risotto slow cooker recipe Smile

Whataboutwhathuh · 08/08/2016 19:13

YNAB only connects to American bank accounts as far as I could work out.

I created a budget category for my savings and allocated it to that. So I have lines for clothes / house / car / gifts and the budget for that is the balance of the account.

The idea if to budget to 0 so every pound has a job. If some of it is savings it has a job so just name it.

Badders123 · 08/08/2016 19:13

Collie
I would really recommend the ektorp sofas from IKEA
