what value food stuffs do you recommend? would you use the rice?

what other essentials are worth going for?

asda,tesco, perhaps sainsbury

Dry spaghetti is just as good as any other, normally about 14p.

The rice is fine as long as you rinse it really well before cooking. The value Basmati is great.

Most fruit and vegetables are fine, although grapes are a bit hit and miss.

Tinned tomatoes, passata, beans all fine. Tinned potatoes are great in omelettes and casseroles.

Most of the biscuits are fine, and the value sponge cake from Tesco is really nice (and is completely devoid of the dreaded buttercream).

Value flours, basmati rice,
tomato puree tinned tomatoes, mushy peas.
Mayonnaise - tesco 40p value is nice. Heinz ketchup mixed with shops own in a Heinz bottle.
Pasta 20p bags
Asda smart price butter.

The instant noodles in Asda and Tesco. I think they've gone up from 8p to 12p (shocking!) but you can soak them and use them for lots of things. It's a student habit I've never lost.

I also get very happy buying chick peas and lentils by the sack for bargain prices but they're not strictly 'value range', but 'world foods'.

Cheap meat I find best from Iceland then slow cooker the fuck out of it and whatever it is, it's lovely.

Currently shopping at Sainsburys online as had 6 weeks worth of coupons sent for £10 off / week

Everything for sainsburys. Particularly the 20p lemonade, slightly less fizzy which Is perfect for me but still lovely and lemony.

I don't like the rice
I use-
Spaghetti, tinned toms, plain flour, individually wrapped choc digestives, tortilla chips, tinned peaches, museli, tin foil, toilet cleaner, sanitary towels, kitchen roll, cotton pads, sultanas, salted cashews, humous, fresh carrots.

Basic white potatoes in sainsburys are a waste of money, mostly black or green...

Oh and frozen sweetcorn and large pepperoni pizzas....

It sounds like a lot but I am actually a brand snob for quite a lot too

Last month I switched the DC (2.5 & 9mos) from petit filous/yoplait wildlife yogurts to the stores' own brands, they haven't noticed, though out of Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, I think the Morrisons ones are the best. 42p/6 rather than £1/6.

I also buy:

salt
biscuits

I'll be honest, I plan to buy more value stuff and then chicken out! Though I do buy store brand rather than "posh" brands for things like coffee, bread, pasta, cooking sauces, pancakes/crumpets, treat cereals and household cleaning things.

disppointment in my local tesco.
they no longer stock value bake beans
can you believe it.
and i couldnt find any frozen meat, let alone frozen value meat.
i did go for the value spagetti and have mixed it with the usual spagetti so we wont know.
and we have also value, well essential waitrose butter.

in fact my local tesco seems quite low on its value range, now I am looking!
