I'm adding as I'm reading so sorry if disjointed and can't remember names.
Love the noun drawing.
Penny sweeping is a great idea . I will raid my purse or bank account later.
Dh is about the same thanks. Hope the antibiotics start working today. Dmam's turn to be poorly today. Managed to park free at the hospital though with a bit of local knowledge of free side streets.
£3.25 on a puzzle book and £32.50 in IKEA but one of the things I wanted was oos so will need to go back. £1.60 toll road

BaBaBaBoomBoom · 01/01/2016 20:08

Hellooooooo...

Can I join in?
We are a household of me and Dh, 3yo and 17 mo. We are saving for a mortgage and I've decided this year we really need to knuckle down!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/01/2016 20:10

Welcome BaBaBaBoomBoom

babsmam · 01/01/2016 20:10

Fuzz good luck registering, don't worry about talking about your job we want to help as its so hard and you.
Pleased the party went well need.
I really can't find the time to do spreadsheets and I really need to. Give me a kick up the ass please.
Welcome new people and returners.
Freezer and cupboard audit needed this weekend but we are out tomorrow and I might be needed at the hospital. Hopefully Sunday as that is decorations down and sorting out day

5minutestobed · 01/01/2016 20:46

This thread moves so fast!
Had a good day yesterday, swapped a duplicate present for DS for two other toys and returned some clothes to Boots and swapped them for some make up bits that I was going to buy anyway so only spent £1.50 on the bus. NSD today as well.
Quite tempted to do the penny saving thing, might just try and save a set amount each week instead.

fuzzpig · 01/01/2016 20:55

Aw, thank you babs :)

Takeaway was nice, and saved some so that's dinner or lunch sorted for the DCs anyway.

Anyone returned stuff via post office to Amazon? I dropped the item off on Tuesday morning but not sure how long it should take to show on my account (I've asked for the refund as a giftcard).

Just realised I haven't got our diary for this year out yet, I meant to start filling it in today! I'll grab it now before Sherlock starts

SpottyTeacakes · 01/01/2016 21:16

All the time fuzz. I'd say you'll have it by the end of next week, given the time of year. I have something to return too I was hoping they would let me keep it as they sent me the wrong item!

Somewhat frustratingly, YNAB have released a new version today. The old one still works, so I'm not paying for the new one, but they've removed all the v4 help guides off the site.

I wanted to put the CC on there but not sure what I'm doing now.

Ipsos · 01/01/2016 21:37

For the spreadsheet I just stick all the receipts in my trouser pocket if I'm out shopping and when I get home I type the numbers into my laptop, which is always on. I just have a spreadsheet that I made myself and it expands to do exactly what I need. My needs are not complex enough to use YNAB, though the tutorials were very helpful.

I think the key is to think about which areas of your own money situation need most attention and focus your spreadsheet on those. I think the the more it is tailored to your own needs, the more likely you are to use it.

JeepersMcoy · 01/01/2016 21:55

I've had spreadsheets in the past and used YNAB for a bit. Now I just use money dash board as that is linked up to my accounts and automatically pulls over my spends. You can then tag them so you can follow his much you spend on what and set budgets for spending on the tags.

It isn't always as instant as i'd like and can go a bit strange at payday for some reason. I think it is issues with dh's bank and how quickly it updates, but it is good enough for my needs at the moment.

I do think if you want to get a really good understanding of moment by moment spending by the penny there is nothing like actually writing it into a spreadsheet or YNAB yourself though. I'm just to lazy to keep it up Blush

I got my 5kg bags of rice in the post and have started using them. I'm a bit confused about why the rice inside smells sort of like whisky malt, or like dusty animal feed when the small bags of the same rice don't. This is my fourth big bag and it's been the same with all of then. Does anybody know enough about rice to know what that means? I think it's a question for NK5 really but she's not here. Thanks!

needastrongone · 01/01/2016 22:19

No idea ipsos, sorry I can't help there.

I've just ordered a bulk buy of dog food online. There's a 5% discount on the brand we use, which is rare. Not a massive amount saved really, but small gains I guess.

I have sat on the sofa since 3pm this afternoon and done nothing but snooze, watch TV and internet faffed. I can't remember the last time I did this but I was shattered after tidying my house up and little sleep.

Off to bed now.

Finances in the morning. I still write all mine down, which works for me, but is very old fashioned.

lilacclery · 01/01/2016 22:39

Love the Penny saving idea, have tried & failed the 52 week one twice so glad to try something new which sounds more achievable too. Will do it as a coin sweeping venture into my 30 day notice account so I can see it mounting up.

Today was diesel spends again, 3rd fill over the holidays but I've been up and down the country and I've a 7 seater & the dc car seats in so my car is used most.

Today essentially marks end of my holidays, return home tomorrow, going to cinema sun with dc & advertising for my second job mon & tues and then back to work on wed morning Sad it's been a lovely holiday

Ememem84 · 01/01/2016 22:45

need that's pretty much what we've done since we came back from lunch. Sofa. Tv. Internet faff.

feel completely exhausted. But suspect it's because the festivities are over. And we are back to normal. Almost.

tomorrows spends should be minimal. I have a riding lesson to pay for £25. And we need milk. £1.12.

AdoraBell · 01/01/2016 22:53

3, I think, NSDs. Tomorrow we need passport photos.

Will try to catch up over the weekend.

Happy New Year to all frugaleers Wine hope everyone is well.

AuditAngel · 02/01/2016 02:08

Friday -NSD
Thursday: parking for Panto £4; bottle of water £2 (got friend to grab one for me; gave her £2 and didn't get any change); Sainsbury's £32 pies and mash for lunch today, cottage pie for tomorrow plus a few bits; £1.50 bus fare to go out, £30 on drinks, got a lift home at 2.

Tomorrow we have Panto so parking £4 plus lunch for DD(£5.69) and me (about £10)

Allgunsblazing · 02/01/2016 06:44

Adora, thank you for reminding me about passports, we need to do ours too!
Yesterday was a NSD, today we'll do a waitrose shop.

babsmam · 02/01/2016 07:20

Spendy day here today as out with friends.

JeepersMcoy · 02/01/2016 07:44

Managed my nsd yesterday but will be a spendy day today. Have a trip to the library this morning so bus fare and coffee spend. Also need to pick up some polyfilla while in town. Plus food shop needed desperately and have to buy dd some new clothes as the little monkey just won't stop growing.

ipso where do you get your bags of rice from? We are eating a lot of it at the moment so buying bulk might be a good investment.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/01/2016 08:07

I've decided to go to the cinema today. It's only £1.58 each and it gets us out the house!

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/01/2016 08:18

Sounds like a bargain, Spotty.

Need a trip to lidl at some point. Other than that aiming to spend nothing.

Put £3.65 in the coin jar for the penny challenge.

Ememem84 · 02/01/2016 08:20

Tempted to cancel my riding lesson today as it's windy and rainy. But. If I do it now it'll cost me an extra £10.

I have waterproof jacket. But no trousers. Must get some....

Today, other than riding, is a sorting/cleaning day. Tomorrow is ebaying.

Ipsos · 02/01/2016 08:35

Jeepers I get rice from Amazon but sometimes it's also sold in Asda. I generally just look round online as availability and prices can change a lot.

Pointlessfan · 02/01/2016 08:42

Today was planned as NSD but weather is so bad we might swap park for soft play. Also I wanted to get some sweets for my Year 11 class to say well done in their mock exam, pound shop will do for that.
