Credit crunch toiletries and make-up challenge

Inspired by a similar discussion on MSE.com Smile

I've just been through a drawer and cupboard of smellies and beauty products and decided to kill two birds with one stone - reduce spending on such products and clear out some clutter.

Is anyone interested in joining me in a similar challenge and/or sharing cost-cutting beauty tips?

There's another thread on here in s&b about beauty hoards.

The idea is to use it up!!

When I started I had about 12 moisturisers numerous serums and "miracle" hair and makeup products.

I've used de cluttered and am slowly regaining control of dressing table.

I agree tresseme is great. I buy the huge bottles when on special offer. I really like the red one (keratin smooth?) does wonders for my thick slightly unruly hair.

Currently using up Aussie products which are just, in my opinion, not as good. They smell great but after a day hair is a bit lifeless (but only if I've blow dried it - left to dry naturally and unstyled it looks awesome).

Myturnnow4 · 03/08/2015 19:51

Ooh, thanks for the tip, I didn't even know that board was there!

Does Tresseme often appear on special offer then, and can you advise what is the best regular offer?

So I'm down to my last bottle of body moisturiser and not sure whether to get a frugal replacement or my usual. I think frugal might be false economy in this case because moisturiser is one of my luxuries and I'm going through a bit of a tough patch, so it might cheer me up a bit.

im on the lookout for an alternative to no7 protect and perfect moisturiser, just used the last of 2 jars I got at xmas. cant afford anymore :(

Zazzabeans · 03/08/2015 21:26

also down to the lastdrop of bed head shampoo and conditioner from the big pump bottles :( which are excellent value for money imo, bought them in january and just finishing it now.
any alternatives?
money is really tight atm.

ememem84 · 03/08/2015 22:22

myturn stay away from the other board!!! I'm on it and have made a list of lovely things I want to try. Once I've used up my hoard...... I'm meant to be money saving....!!

whatever you do stay away from the Korean skincare thread

I tend to buy tresseme when it's on offer in boots. So far twice this year.

annielostit · 04/08/2015 06:59

Zazza, you can get bedhead shampoo in tk maxx / home sense. It usually sells at £12 a big bottle.

Myturnnow4 · 04/08/2015 08:21

eme funnily enough I'd just had the same thought, your warning came too late!
Tresemme offer appears best in Asda, 3x 900ml for £6, when they have it.

annie do you know if those shops sell other bedhead products?

umiaisha · 04/08/2015 08:54

Zazza - was going to suggest tk max too. Have also seen tigi on groupon before, so worth keeping an eye out.

ememem84 · 04/08/2015 17:27

Try tigi on feelunique.com

They're usually quite good.

Itscurtainsforyou · 04/08/2015 18:06

I would really like to find a cheaper version of my toiletries but have had too many failed attempts.
My dehydrated/sensitive skin is great using the clarins hydra range (moisturiser and serum), but I'm currently trying a different type and it just feels wrong.
Just a shame it's £££ more for the clarins...

RedCrayons · 04/08/2015 18:14

I decluttered by hoard from the bottom of the wardrobe a couple of weeks ago. I came across an unopened Liz Earle cleanse and polish I forgot I had.

I'm a big fan of Aldi skincare. I'm really struggling in the budget beauty though.

ladybird69 · 04/08/2015 18:27

Can anyone recommend a cheap but luxurious feel bath oil/soak. I love a deep soak but need an affordable one.

Myturnnow4 · 06/08/2015 07:37

Make your own bath salts ladybird? I think you use Epsom salts (can't remember from my childhood). Add some essential oils? I bet there are some gorgeous craft ideas on the Internet.

I love a hot bath.

False economy here - bought the cheapest body moisturiser I could find (Nivea, it was on offer) and I'm not keen. It's like sun protection. Guess it'll help against any sunshine that appears today!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 06/08/2015 07:57

I got the big bottles of bed head months ago from Amazon and they were even cheaper than tkmaxx.

annielostit · 06/08/2015 14:36

Tk maxx had a few things this morning, but I think it's hit and miss. The giant Shampoo's were £12.
Allbeauty.com have some on offer too.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 06/08/2015 14:47

I've stopped buying everything premade, except toothpaste, shampoo bars, & basic cheap vegetable oil soap. I buy whatever whitening sensitive toothpaste I can find in Poundland, usually Arm & Hammer. I buy a natural shampoo bar online, made from soapnuts & other lovely things. I buy Oliva soap (apparently you can wash your hair with it, but I'm too in love with the shampoo bars).

I make my own spray in hair conditioner, body lotion, facial moisturiser, sunscreen, spot gel, deep conditioning hair treatment. Costs a lot less & no nasty chemicals. I also use apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle to rinse through my hair.

CordeliaFoxx · 06/08/2015 15:11

I find tresseme awful on my hair, I bought the huge bottles on offer ages ago. I find my hair feels greasy really quickly and doesn't seem clean like it does when I use Aussie. I have been using up the conditioner on my kids with the nitty gritty!

ladybird69 · 06/08/2015 20:19

Thanks Myturn. I'll try googling for some ideas Grin
I think we're rare these days, my friend has just ripped out her bath!

Myturnnow4 · 06/08/2015 21:58

A pleasure lady. I googled too - some lovely gift ideas.

I can't believe how cheap Bedhead is on Amazon!! I've been ripped off for years by my hairdressers. I thought the whole point of Tigi was that it was sold only through salons.

OP posts:
RedCrayons · 06/08/2015 22:37

I'm sure I saw Tigi on offer on Groupon today. £18 for shampoo and conditioner, although not sure how that compares to Amazon.

Myturnnow4 · 19/08/2015 08:04

Hmm, not sure how I'm doing. I stock-piled on a luxury item from Body Shop in order to cash in on their new loyalty card. Similarly with bath bubbles on offer from Asda. I think so long as I buy neither product before Christmas it will have been frugal.

dementedma · 20/08/2015 21:40

Tub of solid coconut oil from Holland and Barrett does pretty much everything moisture wise. Great for dry feet, knees, elbows. I use it everywhere. A tub has lasted ages.
Toothpaste £1 from pound land - even the top branded stuff - but Asda 30p stuff does the job. I home dye my hair for £6 a go and get lots of positive comments. Like Boots serum but if can't afford it use Nivea or again, coconut oil.

ilovechristmas123 · 01/09/2015 21:57
