Fire wood

The dc's and I went for a walk in the woods today and collected a lot of dead wood/branches etc for our log burner this winter. Are we allowed to do this? Obviously, we didn't cut any trees down, or snap any branches, but was just wondering if this was OK? I have no idea who owns the woods, but it has footpaths through it etc.

I've heard people say about ancient bylaws where you can collect wood from common land or something. But really, I don't think you are supposed to.
Although I have done it. Only with the DCs though - otherwise I feel like a bag lady.

Look in your your area for timber merchants and joiners - they will give you off cuts for free.

If you've room to store it look for things like pallets.

off cuts of treated timber will clog your chimney in no time. Do NOT burn this stuff. Ditto pallets.

you need proper wood, seasoned for a year or more.

if the land is owned by someone, the wood is theirs too.
