selling stuff

Having a bit of a clear out and have lots of things that I'm sure we could sell.

Clothes hardly worn, shoes with the tags still on, bags, wii games etc

What's the best way to go about this? I've never done anything like this before and don't know where to start.

Thanks

You could start with EBay, or if you are a memeber of Facebook, many areas have pages for 'stuff for sale in Manchester/Stoke/Glasgow'.

dementedpixie · 14/04/2015 16:06

I have sold things on my local Facebook selling page

Ilovenannyplum · 14/04/2015 16:08

Facebook selling sites are good, no eBay/PayPal fees and buyers come and collect from you

ItsaTenfromDen · 14/04/2015 16:25

thanks, I'll have a look see if I can find anything local.

Gumtree is another option and free ! eBay charges are high if you put a reserve price and they take a percentage of the sale price 15% I think ? Just sold some shoes and glasses frames. Made 60£ but put some jewellery on with a reserve ( not sold yet ;( and my fees are 18£ !! Think il try gumtree next time !

KatharineClifton · 15/04/2015 13:30

Ebay take 10% and Paypal take 20p per transaction plus 3.4%. This is on total sale including p&p. Still worth it though. MyHermes are pretty cheap for larger items.

Local Facebook sites are a great way of selling anything. Search 'For Sale & your area' - there are 40 odd in my area but I don't really bother with groups less than 1k members. Bundles of stuff are always good too. People like to haggle a lot on FB so it's best to add a bit on your price then when they haggle down to the price you had in mind you will both be happy. It's like a stupid game really. Just bear in mind at least half of the buyers will mess you around - not turning up etc. - so just consider that part of the game and don't get annoyed, just relist.

Itsalldramarama · 15/04/2015 14:52

Woo hoo just sold 2 pairs of earrings for 300 ! Got 289 but still happy ! Haven't worn them for ages !!

Oodear · 15/04/2015 19:05

Anyone sold books ? Webuybooks doesn't appear to be accepting and fat brain is offeringb10p each which will take a long time to the minimum £15!

Done car boots before but books don't tend to sell for much plus I don't have enough to make the initial pay out back.

Itsalldramarama · 15/04/2015 19:26

I'd like to know this too ! Got boxes full ! Long standing argument about getting rid with DH but lothe to pArt ! Thinks it's time though !

confusedofengland · 16/04/2015 16:59

Another vote for Facebook local sales sites, I am gradually listing all baby bits as DS3 outgrows them & am averaging about £80 per month from bits & pieces. It helps if you are willing to offer delivery/meeting as many people don't drive, and this also eliminates waiting around for people who aren't going to turn up. You can charge a couple of pounds extra for petrol.

Gumtree is also good for larger items, as is preloved.co.uk. Netmums also has a selling section, but I've not used it for years or had any success with it.

Ebay is probably best for collectibles or names.

Finally, for books, there is webuybooks, fatbrain & ziffit. I have found that Ziffit gives the best prices for most of the books DH & I have to offer (media & languages), but sometimes the others are better. I am doing an Excel spreadsheet of what each site will offer for each book, then will send the best bundle to each one Grin. It is also worth posting books on FB, especially if you can find a subject-specific page (if they are textbooks).

confusedofengland · 16/04/2015 17:01

Also, when selling books via the sites I mentioned, check for cashback/voucher codes before sending as you may get a bit more money that way (only a few %, but it all helps Smile)

KatharineClifton · 16/04/2015 17:55

I did the same with Ziffit/Music Magpie/webuydvds. Sent all 3 bundles off happy. Took photos just in case they said something was out of order. Webuydvds nicked two low price ones saying water damage - not a lot but annoying. I know there was no water damage, and had the photos to prove it. But hey ho, and I have their cheque. Ziffit nicked the top price dvd, also nothing wrong with it but no way of proving anything. I do not have their cheque. No idea with Magpie as they haven't processed the DVD;s yet so obviously no cheque.

I would of rather of given them all to a charity shop than have them stealing dvd's off me which they will obviously resell as they were in brilliant condition.

Saying this just in case you decide to send expensive things to any of these sites. Amazon return things if they decide they aren't up to scratch (which they did with one book from my last trade-in as it was a vintage but the spine wasn't perfect).

KatharineClifton · 16/04/2015 17:57

Just double checked and Ziffit stole 5 of the 14.

KatharineClifton · 16/04/2015 18:00

And Ziffit are the ones who have already paid. Still waiting for payment from the discs webuyanydvds didn't steal and waiting for processing from magpie. Sent on 23rd March.

Itsalldramarama · 16/04/2015 18:43

Just been on ziffit .. It doesn't like crime fiction !! Scanner says no !ust have scanned over a 100 !!
It likes text books and children's phonic reading books ! Got 5£ each for some old early years and psychology books ! Total 25£ so no hArm in sending them as never been used for ages ! Fingers crossed

Oodear · 17/04/2015 06:30

Haven't tried ziffit.
Webuybooks isn't taking anything I've scanned so I gave up at 30. Fat brain offering max of 10p often 5p so it's going to be a long time to reach the £15 min.

Oodear · 17/04/2015 07:56

I've tried ziffit and only wanted 2/ 60 so up to 44p

confusedofengland · 17/04/2015 10:42

Oodear have you tried putting your books on FB sales sites? Maybe as a bundle - something like 5 books by same author/same genre for £5? People like to think they're getting a bargain!

QuiteQuietly · 17/04/2015 14:38

Amazon are good for book trade-ins - they return anything they don't like and if it gets lost in the post or at their warehouse (you get a free royal mail tracked barcode so can see if the package has been delivered), then they pay the amount they promised without quibble.

Momox.co.uk are also very good. They pay cash into bank account (Amazon pay Amazon vouchers). They take CDs/DVDs too and don't mind broken boxes/jewel cases.

Webuybooks and Music Magpie are thieving scoundrels.

Oodear · 18/04/2015 12:31

None selling on FB. Asked 50p each. Am selling a anything on amazon that's over 20p
