Would you eat it?

We don't have a lot of spare money and I'm doing some careful meal planning from the freezer. I have found two bags of Tesco chicken and vegetable Fajita mix. They are best before end of Dec 2014.

I am loathe to throw them out but don't want to risk poisoning the kids!

What would you do?

I'd eat it! But I pay little heed to dates on food! And if it says best before, that just means it might not taste quite as nice doesn't it?

confusedandemployed · 07/03/2015 13:01

I'd eat it. That wasn't so very long ago!

dementedpixie · 07/03/2015 13:05

if it is a best before date then the issue would be with a reduction in quality rather than a safety issue with the food. It is not that far past the date either so yes, I would use them too

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2015 13:07

Is it just those little bags of spice mix? If so yes, i'd eat it.

expatinscotland · 07/03/2015 13:08

Yes I'd eat it

dementedpixie · 07/03/2015 13:09

no its not just a spice mix - it is chicken and veg in the fajita mix (if I have googled the right stuff)

HemanOrSheRa · 07/03/2015 13:15

Is it the chicken and veg mix that is from the freezer section anyway? Not that makes any difference! I'd eat it and I'd give it to DS too.

babygiraffe86 · 07/03/2015 13:15

I'd eat it :-)

ouryve · 07/03/2015 13:19

So long as it looked OK, and not badly freezer burnt, I'd eat it. Serve it separately from the tortillas or whatever, just in case it does taste horrible, then you don't ruin other food with it.

Charlesroi · 07/03/2015 13:43

You won't poison the kids. I'd eat it.

Eva50 · 07/03/2015 13:46

Right, that settled it. We will eat it if it looks fine when cooked. Yes, it's the chicken and veg mix from the frozen section. It's not something I've bought before - must have been on special offer! I buy loads of stickered fresh stuff and use it for a few days past the date but was not sure about this.

Bacteria cannot multiply on frozen food meaning that if it's kept at below -18 it keeps safe indefinitely. The quality might deteriorate but it will still be safe to eat. There is some good guidance here

babygiraffe86 · 07/03/2015 14:17

I found 3 chicken breasts in the freezer drawer that I'm assuming must have been there for over 6 months - can't remember the last time I froze some!

Ate them for tea last night, still standing :-)

Eva50 · 07/03/2015 14:30

hellhas thank you. That's good to know.

I'd eat it, as I know if the past we've eaten things that have been in the freezer far too long. As with all food, just make sure you cook it through properly.
