£150 is our budget for March and we really can't go over that. There is 2 of us - DH doesn't like any fruit and little veg, I will eat anything!

Please share your cheap meal ideas or any saving tips.

Is it just for March, or is this your budget every month?

I've had a look at my meal plan for the meals with the least veggies and come up with the below weekly menu.

I would definitely be shopping online to try and keep myself away from the supermarkets.

  • Omelettes (could bulk out with beans and / or oven chips)
  • Pie, Mash & Mushy peas (Morrisons do 1 good sized Steak & Kidney pie for 64p)
  • Gammon & fried eggs (possibly with baked beans again - we never get bored of them)
  • Cottage pie (mince, potatoes, frozen diced onions, tin of garden peas/carrots - or leave these out if he really won't eat them).
  • Sunday roast (should be able to get a joint of pork or a chicken for less than £4), potatoes, Yorkshire puddings carrots / peas (surely everyone eats carrots & peas? You can buy packs of stuffing for about 30p too).
  • Curry with the leftovers the next day (jar of curry sauce with rice or chips)

For breakfasts you could have a bowl of bran flakes (own brand, huge box for 88p) with milk, or toast (using the cheapest loaf as it tastes okay when toasted) with value spread, or you can get own brand / value Jam & peanut butter cheap enough, or a big bag of porridge oats - should be enough variety there for the month.

For lunchtime: Sandwiches can be done cheaply enough as long as you don't mind basics. Make egg mayo if you have enough eggs, a big tin of corned beef is £2 (ooh lovely with brown sauce). Morrisons have 2 x 6 packs of crisps for £1.60, multipacks of chocolates (like penguin bars) you can usually get for £1.

If you're worried about your own fruit & veg intake. You should be able to get a multipack of apples for less than £1, and same for bananas. I'd be sneaking frozen mushrooms or / and onions in where I could which are around £1 a bag, obviously onions will be cheaper bought fresh & chopped up as you need them.

For other snacks: biscuits - value digestives, custard creams and chocolate chip cookies are perfectly fine.

I'm sure you could get a jar of coffee, box of teabags and sugar to last the month for £5-£6? DH is the only one in my house of 4 who drinks coffee, so I admit to not being sure how much it costs.

Do a mock shop on Morrisons website and see how much that lot comes for, for one week. Then choose the cheapest slot (I have mine delivered between 9-10 on a Friday night for £1). However minimum spend is £40, so I think you'd have to split your £150 between three weekly shops or you'd be a bit over budget. How about a delivery every 10 days? or 10 days worth of shopping for three weeks, then in week four you would have enough food so just need to do a top up shop for bread and milk.

My own budget for 3 adults, 1 child is £300 a month and I'm usually coming in at under £250 and there's a lot of meat in that too so I'm sure £150 is doable.

bantamgirl mentioned coffee - I bought a 200g jar from Aldi a couple of weeks - £2.57 for 200g - it has plenty of flavour, in fact, need slightly less than the brand I've bought in the past!
