What are Lidl/Aldi cereals like?

I buy a few things from Lidl and Aldi when passing. Can anyone let me know if they think Lidl and Aldi cereals are as good as well known brands or say Tescos own brand. Do you have any recommendations?

DH reckons we'll be able to tell the difference.

ALL branflajes are inedible!

Sweetened cardboard it is, yuk

Purpleflamingos · 24/02/2015 21:02

Aldi cornflakes are nice. I will still stick to Asda bran flakes though. Dc refuse to eat any porridge other than ready brek or Quakers and weetabix has to be weetabix. The only other cereal we have are Rice Crispies and crunchy nut cornflakes - they have to be Kelloggs. They say it doesn't taste the same.
Although dmother says I knew the difference when she tried to swap my cereal to an non branded version and I ate toast every morning after that week for the next twenty years convinced I didn't like cereals.

christinarossetti · 24/02/2015 21:10

Aldi's' and Lidl's cornflakes have been the only dud for us.

Taste and texture of sawdust.

I've bought some cooking chocolate to make them into cakes.

Coco0123 · 24/02/2015 22:17

My kids noticed the difference straight away & were not fussed with the rice krispies & the cheerios from aldi. (They are fussy buggers though & been too used to the brands -aged 8 & 6 now, I think I left it too late Grin )

DelphiniumBlue · 24/02/2015 22:23

Haven't tried Lidl cereal, but the Aldi ones are horrible, no-one in this house will eat them. I disagree with the posters who have said that they indistinguishable from the branded ones. I have tried duping my boys by putting the Aldi cereals in brand boxes but they won't eat them.

BUT, my boys were spoilt by having either branded or some supermarket own brands for years - only discovered Aldi a few years ago. If you have young children, they won't know any better!

I wasn't so keen on Lidl's Shreddies. The muesli and porridge are good though.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 24/02/2015 22:30

I eat Lidl muesli, the one that is boxed similarly to Dorset Cereals. I buy the berries and cherries box and the nut and raisin box and then mix them together. Delicious. I also eat Lidls So Easy Oats which are good too

LoisEinhorn · 26/02/2015 11:23

Lidls granola is gorgeous. wouldnt buy it from anywhere else

Lottie4 · 26/02/2015 14:51

Just an update following my post. DH and myself have tried the fruit museli from Lidl and it was really nice (will buy again), so will continue to try cereals from both shops (one at a time bearing in mind some negative comments).

They cornflakes and frosties in Lidl r perfect

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 27/02/2015 11:22

I don't eat most cereals (yes, I'm one of those people Grin) but DP says the Aldi coco pops and shreddies are fine and he is a total brand snob.

The mueslis from both shops are generally better than other brands so I'd just carry on trying them as you go along and decide if you like them (or can tolerate them, given the saving - eg would you rather have a box of Kellogs, or a box of Aldi version for half the price).

senua · 27/02/2015 11:30

Another vote for Aldi muesli. I love the Really Nutty one it's so ... nutty!
It is very nice, like home-made. It actually tastes of all the good things instead of being a sugar overload like other brands.

Dh and ds both happily eat aldi bran flakes and rice crispies. I don't like any cereal, branded or not.

serin · 28/02/2015 19:21

We have tried most of the Aldi cereals and didn't like any of them.

Lidl on the other hand has gorgeous muesli (in the blue bag) which has won national awards. It's on offer at the moment too Grin

Their granola is also lovely.

nicenewdusters · 28/02/2015 19:22

Lidl chocco shells, chocco rice, nougat pillows, cornflakes, quick porridge oats - we love them all, and my kids are super fussy ! Didn't like their own brand Weetabix though.

avocadotoast · 28/02/2015 19:24

I've been eating Aldi knock off Shreddies (Mighty Malties, I believe they're called) and they're fine. They're not quite as nice as real Shreddies, but they're about on a par with the Morrisons own brand ones we had before.

TarkaTheOtter · 28/02/2015 19:26

Lidl Cheerios have stained my toddler's clothes an orangey colour. So I wouldn't recommend.
Also pretty sure they are not fortified but that might be a plus point for some.

bananadrama · 05/03/2015 11:39

It is worth noting that most of Lidl's cereal (that I have used) is not fortified with vitamins & minerals. I only just noticed this when I recently checked the packets!

Branleuse · 05/03/2015 11:43

they are exactly the same as the main brands

summersdayinmay · 05/03/2015 12:12

We buy Fruit and Fibre from Aldi and DH loves it. It's bursting with raisins and sultanas.

rhihaf · 08/03/2015 17:05

Another vote for Lidl's muesli (all the versions!), their cheerios/hoops, shreddies, porridge oats and their special flakes with red berries. Wasn't that impressed with their weetabix though.

Also their greek yoghurt (the big bucket) is lush and they've just started doing mini/individual pots of greek yoghurt either plain or with strawberries, 4 pots for 99p - lovely! Quite big servings too, for a small yoghurt pot. They also sell nice punnets of fresh blueberries for 99p which is good with youghurt.

Their freshly squeezed OJ is also lovely(I like the one with bits), as good as Tropicana and only 99p for a litre bottle.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 08/03/2015 17:08

Lidl muesli is great; cereals are fine. Like supermarket own brands rather than big names though

Lyinginwait888 · 08/03/2015 17:11

I really like Aldis granola.

19lottie82 · 10/04/2015 20:00

The Aldi version of Cheerios are amazing! The Lidl kind, not so much Envy
