Meal planning and organising cupboards

I've got into a habit of meal planning but for some reason I never actually base this around what I already have in Blush

How do you find it best to organise? Do you keep a list on the fridge and when you run out highlight it or do you keep a blank peice of paper on the fridge to add things you need?

organisedhome.com does printable lists for cupboards, fridge & freezer that you can tick off when you've used something.

I consider 'meals' and 'store cupboard stuff' to be separate entities really. I've trained the family to write on the shopping list anything they see running low, so then that's what I get next time I'm shopping (pasta, coffee, cereal, etc.,etc.etc,). "Meals" I decide on when I'm in the shop, depending on special offers or what looks nice or how long the dates are on the meat, then, decide from there what fresh stuff I need to go with them. (So, if I picked up some diced beef, I'd get 'casserole' type veg to go with it, but if I picked up some salmon it would be likely to be new potatoes and green beans or whatever). The tinned / frozen / packet / jars or stuff is bought off the list though.
