Selling DVDs & textbooks

DH has been out of work for a while & we are starting to feel it financially Sad so I am trying to sell a few things. Among other things, I have some uni textbooks (10+ years old, but very expensive when I bought them!) & DVDs to sell. I am trying to work out where is the best place to sell them.

So far, I have listed them on Amazon, Gumtree, Preloved & FB & have managed to sell one DVD. I have looked at CEX, as there is one in my town, but that doesn't seem to give very good prices.

Has anybody got any more tips please? TIA Smile

Textbooks can get out of date quite quickly (new editions) and often there are lots of people trying to offload old ones which depresses prices. I have had some success with the amazon trade-in scheme, abebooks textbook buy-back scheme and momox.co.uk. I would check all three and go with the highest price for each book as the prices vary wildly between the sites. But accept that probably many of your books will be worth pennies if anything at all which is hard, given that they probably cost a lot of money at the time of purchase! Go for a freepost option if you trade-in online, as textbooks are heavy.

DVDs - I sell some on Amazon (things that list over £5). The rest I save in a box until I have enough to do a music magpie order (they are usually 25p or so each). Go through a cashback site for music magpie for a bit extra. If you have a lot of DVDs, it may be worth doing a car boot sale? I wouldn't bother lugging the textbooks to one though. I have a friend that sells bundles of DVDs/CDs on facebook which may be worth a go if you are on it.

We had a very rough patch a few years ago and I sold pretty much everything not nailed down. It was bizarre what made money - one of my favourites was a broken buggy I sold in bits for nearly twice the cost of a working new one. So don't be disheartened if the books and DVDs aren't working out, just look for the next thing to try! Good luck.

Thanks, Quite, I think I might just have to accept, as you say, that the books are worth next to nothing & take that! If we didn't need every single penny, I would donate them to a charity shop, but that's just not an option atm if I can get anything for them.

I have dropped the price of the DVDs I have on FB from £3 to £2 each or 2 for £3 & will see if that does anything. If not will try bundles.

I have also been advertising other bits (mainly baby clothes & toys) & had some small success earlier this week - £21 made, which I was pleased with. We have also received a £25 Tesco gift card from when we switched to Sky (worked out half the price of the BT package we had & we will also get £150 cashback). This is very timely as I am going to Tesco tonight to haunt the yellow label sections for baked goods, meat, fruit & veg, as we make Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard look full to bursting atm Grin. Hopefully that amount should get me most of what I need for the week, so that will be one less thing to worry about.

I hate things being like this, it is so tough Sad

We've had a fair bit of success using a combination of www.Fatbrain.co.uk and www.webuybooks.co.uk. Both take DVDs, CDs and books, I think, and we managed to get rid of a few chemistry and english lit textbooks from 15 years ago, although not all! Prices vary widely between the two sites, so it takes a bit of time to work out which site is best for each item.

You just enter the barcodes and they give you an instant quote, if you accept they email you an address label, you box up your stuff and take it to a local newsagent or similar 'collect plus' outlet. You can track your order's progress easily and they send you a cheque in the post or you can get the cash paid directly into your bank account. Check out WeBuyBooks on Twitter, as they often give a code for an extra 10% on your offer.

Hth, and good luck!

When you have chosen which website you want to sell through, do have a look and see if it is listed on the money-back websites such as QuidCo and TopCashBack.

It may just be a small per cent, but well worth it.

Also, do look for voucher codes, although you are selling, it could get you an increase in how much you make.
