How much is your heating on at the moment?

Just wondering how much others have their heating on at the moment. I know we are all different, but really trying to get the right balance between being warm(ish) and cutting back. Ours is coming on as DH gets up 6.15am and goes off at 7.30am (used to be 8am but as I say am trying to be good). Is set to come on for an hour 3.30-4.30, but last two evenings it's gone back on, so am thinking might try 3.30-5.30 as I think boiler uses more when first starts up as running on max capacity. It's 16.8c in lounge at the moment and obviously we'll get colder weather sometime.

All day here too. It doesn't kick in that much though. We experimented with having set periods and it didn't make any difference.

oen1 · 06/11/2014 13:13

I've just, out of curiosity, had a look at the thermostats and the main one is at 17 and the office one at 17.5. The heating has been off since 7.45, I don't feel cold at all and I'm sitting here in a thin jersey top.

Floralnomad · 06/11/2014 13:35

We have done the 24/7 thing for the last couple of years and I think its more cost effective overall .

During day on 15 degrees if I am home n done washing that needs to dry. If no washing 2hrs after school max 17 degrees on thermostat n that's since Mon. Baby 2 arrives end mth so will be on much more am sure n soon will have to be on more although we tend to have it on constant with thermostat at 15 degrees n turn it down to 12 overnight n when out.

Bowlersarm · 06/11/2014 21:21

6am to 9pm at 18 degrees.

Fairylea · 06/11/2014 21:24

Once a day from 5-6.30pm while dc have their baths. We can't afford it on anymore than that even in the depths of winter! We wear a lot of jumpers!

SilentAllTheseYears · 06/11/2014 21:24

15 minutes a day.

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 06/11/2014 21:27

Not at all. It hasn't been on all year and that's the truth. We have throws on the sofas and dressing gowns.
We are on a pre pay meter and I can not afford nearly 20 quid every other day.
I'm Shock at people having it on all day I could never afford that !!

SilentAllTheseYears · 06/11/2014 21:29

Ours went on for the first time today since early February.

RubyGoat · 06/11/2014 21:34

2 hours per day: 1 hour as we're waking up (principally so we don't freeze to death while having showers in the morning), & 1 hour in the early evening, just as we arrive home. We don't have a thermostat though.

North of England, fairly modern house. We wear a lot of jumpers!

Longdistance · 06/11/2014 21:34

So far, we've had it on for about 3 hours during the day. Usually 1-4pm as I'm home then, and the house is still warm thanks to new upvc windows fitted a couple of months ago.

We've recently found out, that our house had insufficient insulation in it, as we are building an extension. I always thought this Hoyle to be cold, and was rather suspicious of it, as, it is a detached, but cricket, it can't really be that cold. So, when we've done with building, we're sorting out the insulation after.

Take that dh! Complaining we pay too much for gas and leccie, cos I was right all along, and it took 7 years to persuade dh to change the windows.

Tauriel1 · 06/11/2014 21:36

Ours is 6.30-8 in the morning

5-8 in the evening. Once DD is in bed I turn it off and put my dressing gown on.

Been on all day today though as I have flu.

cheerupandhaveaglassofwine · 06/11/2014 21:46

Not on at all yet

Girls take a hot water bottle to bed and put a jumper on

When they say its cold then the heating will go on, although we are in the middle of a major rework of the heating so will only be able to go on at all in a couple more days if they want it too once enough is finished for this to be possible

PigletJohn · 06/11/2014 22:01

It's on as much as it wants to be. We have a programmable thermostat that holds desired temperatures according to time of day and day of week, and it now turns itself on from time to time, but less when the sun is shining through the windows and warming the house. Last night was quite cold outside, and it came on in the morning for a while.

WestEast · 06/11/2014 22:06

It's not. We're got shitty electric heaters and a pre payment meter Sad it's jumpers and blankets at our house until pay day.

SilentAllTheseYears · 06/11/2014 22:24

We have a thermostat but I get up and put the heating on 1/2 an hour before everybody is up. I did leave it on 24/7 and had the most horrendous bill ever - £600 for three months gas whereas since doing it as and when we need it it's been £600 for the whole year for gas and electricity.

CremeEggThief · 06/11/2014 22:41

I put mine on on Monday for the first time since late March. At the moment, I'm trying out 6-7.15 a.m. (up at 6.50 and out by 7.30) and 4-6.15 and 8.45-9.45 p.m. on 18 degrees. I'll have it on more in the afternoons/evenings and also slightly longer and later on weekend mornings- maybe 8.30-10.30 a.m.

CatKisser · 06/11/2014 22:45

I don't have central heating - I have a fire and a temporary electric portable thing.
I've had about 4 fires this year, when particularly cold and I put the leccy one on for fifteen minute bursts now and then.
I've got a shed full of log, which is great, but fuck if I'm buying coal @£5/bag every 2days!

evertonmint · 06/11/2014 22:52

Today was the first time it was on since March. I set it to come on at 6.10 off at 7.30. Was glad I'd set it as there was ice on the car this morning so def cold!

Not on in evenings yet. Kids don't feel the cold too much and DH and I wear warm clothes, socks and slippers and snuggle under blanket on sofa if needed.

I'm home all day as I usually work from home (though on mat leave with small baby). Only ever on in the day during the depths of winter.

South of England so milder than most areas but an old, large detached house.

We can afford to heat it but hate overheating and hate heating overnight.

HolgerDanske · 06/11/2014 22:57

Haven't really used it yet. Will probably start doing so within a week or so, though, as temperatures are falling.

I set it to go on at half four (on high, can't remember what temp it actually is) so it heats the house for us when we get up at six. Then I switch it to low as we go out the door in the morning. It stays on low unless it gets cold enough in afternoon/evening to merit high. Then it switches off about nine.

goodasitgets · 06/11/2014 23:00

Not on yet. Still 16c without heating in the house Smile

Lottie4 · 07/11/2014 10:32

Oh, some of you are brave not having your heating on yet - I guess some are more hardy, and others are trying to keep fuel costs down.

Every year I work out how many units we can use in the year and keep within our monthly direct debit (or slightly less). Moved house in the summer and our gas meter is now inside so I can easily monitor it every couple of weeks.

OP posts:
HolgerDanske · 07/11/2014 11:14

I think it also depends on where in the country one is and what sort of house.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 07/11/2014 13:01

The temp people have their thermostat on is irrelevant too as people have them in different places & conditions. Saying you only have it on at 17 and gasping at anyone who has it on at 22 is a bit daft if you have yours in a cold hallway and they have theirs in their sitting room :)
