I'm skint. Got paid 6 days ago. Earn an ok wage but Childcare and a loan from my mum for house deposit take almost £600 a month from wages. Missed a sky payment. Only have sky broadband and phone to save tv license money and obviously sky's extortionate fees (though they have offered a second years free tv we said no)

I moaned to my dad about it and me being skint. He said I shouldn't have broadband if I can't afford it! Broadband! That's £17!!!! It might not even be that. How can I not have broadband especially if no access to tv and Netflix only. I told him I can't read a book in the evening. It's the 21st century. He will be telling me electric is a waste and I should read my book by candlelight soon! Grrrrrrr

Is it really? It's the Shittest, lowest spec one there is. I don't know what to do re that. I also like that it's a saloon so of there is a crash I feel safer

Council tax is 10 months as when it was twelve I forgot and I like to have those two months to catch up with any debt if that makes sense.

Older cars aren't as safe in a crash as new ones.

My Ka costs £130-40 a year to insure, as a comparison.

I'd have a look at loans with your bank or elsewhere offering a very low interest rate. Sainburys and Tesco are offering 4% at the moment. I also think if £150 is your share of the food, as in you spend £300 total a month you could get this down. I use every £15 off your first online shop code going every month with different supermarkets/different email addresses. I also cook a roast chicken or topside of beef once a week and use it for the majority of the week making various other things with the leftovers.

And of it makes you feel any better my disposable income is half yours at £34 a month, the joys of maternity pay!

McBear · 30/09/2014 21:19

Lisa, maternity pay sucks and I have no idea how I managed it. What will you do after? Childcare is the killer...

I agree older cars aren't safer. I used to have a ka. I was tempted to swap the Beemer for one but I think until it breaks I'll keep it. Mot is February (I think) so I'm guessing marching orders will be given then!

Yes 300 is no way what we spend on food. We just spent 37 on food in aldi. nine pound of that was vodka We cook a stew that lasts three ish days or I'll take a 42p soup to work and eat a frozen chicken breast and salad or gammon and salad which is approx £1 for meat and tuppence for salad.

Not go back to my old job where my pay is less than the nursery fees!

Decided its an opportunity to start afresh career wise and make decent money, so looking to open a coffee kiosk at a train station, which involves working 7-12 and DP often works 12-9/1-10 so child are will be minimum and doing a 5 hr shift will be a full days pay, maybe more.

If you're out of luck cutting down any bills, definitely look at the loans out there instead of paying back your parents. We pay similar to you a month for almost £18k worth of debt that will be done in 3 yrs. if the amount isn't that much, you'd probably be able to way cut down those payments.

Other than that, new job? Extra job? Could you do your job freelance or from home? eBay a bunch of stuff? I just sold 8 pairs of shoes to pay for a train ticket to my best friends wedding!

McBear · 30/09/2014 21:49

That sounds incredibly exciting!!!!

New job... Long needed. Extra job... Tick. Clean on a Tuesday eve. Twenty quid extra. I'd love a bar job on a fri night but DP d is negotiable said he wouldn't stay in on a Friday (he rarely goes out on a Friday) so I could earn an extra 25 quid.

My friend falsely claims she is a single parent and earns a tenner more than me per week. I work 50 hrs a week. Her DP earns 18k ish. She just got a lump sum of 1700 from tax credits apparently. Being honest possibly doesn't pay.
