All welcome to join the MN frugaleers for another month of recording our spends, frugal wins and frugal fails!

NSD = No Spend Day (let's have as many as possible!)

LSD = Low Spend Day

I just put them in a weaning container and grab a few pinches as needed. Just make sure they're chopped up small as you would if they were fresh then they can go straight in.

574ejones · 30/09/2014 20:05

Had to have a blood test today and my veins are so buggered up by my hospital stay in the Spring that the nurse had to take it out of my hand (yuck). So, I am blaming my £7 Waitrose spend on this, as I felt faint and needed a cake! But also spent a long overdue £17 on posting my niece and nephew's presents to Canada. Definitely going to revert to using the Canadian Amazon site in future so the postage will be free.

Planning tomorrow to be a NSD!

SpottyTeacakes · 30/09/2014 20:12

575ejones that sounds horrible! There is a patient where I work who has to have it taken from her ankle!

574ejones · 30/09/2014 20:27

Spotty Ouch, that sounds horrible.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 30/09/2014 20:34

574ejones how horrible! poor you! Cake definitely an essential after that. My veins are definitely feeling reticent at the moment from various hospital visits, hopefully they'll spring back into action again. I noticed it was getting harder and harder for them to "find a vein" over the weeks.

I think I overdid it a bit today, feeling exhausted and a bit down. Sad

Itsfab Grin at giving her 3 sprouts. Love it.

I would definitely like to join in a £200 food budget challenge for October.

A couple things I'm really working on...

  • no top ups during the week. Sometimes it looks like things are running low, and I think "oh I need to pick up more of..." but when I look at it closer, there's usually enough to last until the next shop or to make substitutes with a bit of effort.
  • keeping a supply of UHT milk in the house, just a few containers in the summer, up to 6 in the winter. It means if we run out of milk, I can break out one of the UHT milks, thus avoiding a shop and potentially buying extras I don't need.
  • keeping one or two "fast" meals on hand to just toss in the oven for those nights when takeaways are tempting, even if it's just a frozen pizza or fish fingers and chips.
  • meal planning regularly. I've been slack on this, and I have a freezer full of meat that I've not used as much as I should because I didn't plan ahead and didn't take it out the day before to thaw.
  • checking inventory before shopping. HUGE issue for me. I end up with 3 bottles of bleach, but no washing up liquid because I can't remember what I have and what I don't sometimes.

Will plan my meals for the week and post them later. Tomorrow's tea is chicken and sweet potatoes and green beans.

Itsfab · 30/09/2014 20:36

DD is weird. She will eat cabbage but not sweet corn and has got to tolerate sprouts.

DS1 eats all veg. Good boy.

DS2 eats most veg. Good boy too.

DH is a PITA and I blame his mother.

My kids are fed a much bigger variety than DH and his sibling were and it has paid off.

Tomorrow is either chicken casserole, chicken pasta, yum yum chicken, chicken goujons maybe, chicken rice, perhaps. haven't decided yet but it will be chicken!

574 that spend doesn't count.

listsandbudgets · 30/09/2014 20:47

I'm running out of spices. Lots of them are right down towards the bottom the jar including the saffron. Not looking forward to buying that. Does anyone know if the Asian super markets do it cheaper as its so expensive

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/09/2014 20:59

Go to a tesco/asda in an area with a big Asian population, they do big packs for the same price as little containers.

Or try amazon/eBay.

Lists - yep I think so, we have a great Chinese supermarket here and it's so cheap compared to main supermarkets. I paid £2 odd for a Schwartz (tiny) jar of chilli flakes - a massive huge bag is about 80p in the Asian shop.

Asda have a "world food" section you could try there.

Alice- I'm a nightmare! Always forgetting to take meat out to thaw Angry.

Spent £10 posting eBay things. Someone has complained about something I sent them and I'm worried I may have to refund them. It was a clothing item which has frayed badly with use- I sent it brand new and unused. Does it fall back on me then as its faulty?

listsandbudgets · 30/09/2014 21:31

No chocolatedonut its not up to you to refund. If you send it brand new and unused and they've used it its not your fault if its frayed. How long have they had it?

You could offer to refund half as a goodwill gesture but don't give in and lt them have the lot.

girliefriend · 30/09/2014 21:33

£5 sponsor money for dd doing a walk at school for water aid.

£10 cinema as a treat for me and dd, saw Box Trolls which was really rather good Smile

Am going to work out an actual food/petrol budget I decided as at the moment I tend to go with what I think is about right and always end up skint by the end of the month.

NK5BM3 · 30/09/2014 21:37

574 ouch!! Post birth dd, I had to have a 3 bag blood transfusion. It was not nice. I'm already squeamish and when the useless trainee doctor said 'shit!!' When drawing blood, I had enough. I said I needed the blood guy to come sort this out. By then they had tried both arms and both hands. Shock

The Asian supermarkets are definitely cheaper. Today I had to get soy sauce from Sainsburys as id been running low on it for weeks and there's not been time to go to the Asian shops.

I definitely buy uht milk to stock up. And actually because today I had time to go to Sainsburys in the morning, I bought a 6 pack uht milk thing as there's no way I could have bought fresh milk and kept it in the car till evening!!

This shop today however was a nip in shop. Id not had time to do big shop last weekend and of course dh didn't bother. So next few days will be interesting with v little bread left (forgot about that)!

AuditAngel · 30/09/2014 22:26

Wow, get caught up at work for a couple of days and look what happens!

Sunday we were out for lunch, MIL paid for DH's birthday treat. £1.45 each way in bus fares. Monday £5 for lunch, £29.50 for DD1's dancing costumes (plus the next list of things to buy!).

Today £9 on lunch, ridiculous. I chose a nice bag of salad, nice ham, nice fruit pot. I will try to take lunch with me tomorrow.

Got to do the Tesco shop now. Expecting pain.

CoolCadbury · 30/09/2014 22:53

Sorry, have had no time to read everyone's posts. Hopefully, I will be able to catch up tomorrow.

NSD today and yesterday. I couldn't be bothered yesterday to go out and buy lunch for today and had leftovers for lunch instead. Am hoping tomorrow will be a NSD too.

AuditAngel · 30/09/2014 23:26

Ok, well the a Tesco shop was £103, but there were a number of half price offers which don't show in the basket, so the price should go down.

SpottyTeacakes · 01/10/2014 05:45

NK when I was in hospital recently it took the anesthetist forty minutes to get a line in me! I'm fine normally but when I'm ill my veins go into hiding Grin

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 01/10/2014 07:18

NSD planned for today and tomorrow. Does £5 payment for counselling appointment count as a spend? It's a weekly appointment, obviously, but that's my "fee" for the counselling. Confused

chocolate I used to wander out to the kitchen in the evening after the dcs were in bed to take out the frozen meat for the next day, but lots of times I simply forgot. So this month I am taking it out when I'm preparing breakfast in the morning, as I'm already bustling about the kitchen anyway. I'm hoping I can make it enough of a habit to keep it going. I've also got it written on my menu plan right under the meal for the day to take out xxxx for the next day as I always check my menu plan in the morning.

This month I am aiming for £200 for groceries, but I've just looked at the calendar and realised we have 5 Fridays in October. Unfortunately, my goal of £50 per week doesn't gel with that, as that would make it £250, wouldn't it? So I am amending my grocery goal to £250. Must be realistic, obviously. November has 4 Fridays, so that will be £200. I'm going to set a mini goal to cut £5 per week off if possible - so basically this month ideally, I'd like to see it under £225, however, as long as it's under £250 I'll be happy. Yes, that was long winded. Sorry. Blush But I want to push myself to be more frugal in my choices while still allowing myself enough of a budget to try new things, stockpile a bit for winter, and have a few treats here and there for the dcs and myself.

Speaking of the teeny veins issue, usually it's quite easy for them to find them, however, when I was in hospital about 6 years ago (for 2 weeks), the nurse tried 7 times to find the vein to start a new IV, even with me pointing out to her the best options. I finally told her to stop, as she wanted to keep trying. It wasn't life or death thankfully, and I told her as the next shift was coming on in less than an hour, I'd prefer she give someone else a shot at it, as I felt she was struggling and quite frankly I was tired of it. Next nurse came on duty, got it in one try. Hmm

SpottyTeacakes · 01/10/2014 07:26

£4 parking today at the hospital hopefully that'll be it. Bank balance is looking a bit sad due to all the dd that come out on 1st of the month plus car tax.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 01/10/2014 07:32

Spotty I get that too ... first of month and bang! DDs flying out of the account. Always feel a bit flush on last day of month and then skint on the first. Grin

I've taken out the winter coats, tried them on the dcs (thankfully they still fit, so no new coats needed for any of us this year!), and washed them all. I've also pulled out and washed all the hats, scarves, and gloves for this winter. Again, plenty to get through the winter (provided the dcs don't lose them all!) so another expense avoided.

ItalianWiking84 · 01/10/2014 07:54

Going to be a spendy day today Sad
DD is sick I think and we need to figure out what to do. I think she has a cold and blocked nose so need something to clear it up. Will go to the pharmacy later.
She has also started to wake up early 2hours in the night and keep seeming hungry Shock I don't know what to do Sad I'm breastfeeding her but worried there might not be enough anymore for her...
Sorry for the rant

SpottyTeacakes · 01/10/2014 08:03

Italian it's quite normal. Don't worry the more you feed her the more you wake. It could be comfort from the cold or a growth spurt. Ds fed every 1-2 hours at night until seven months.

ItalianWiking84 · 01/10/2014 08:44

Thanks spotty Smile

needastrongone · 01/10/2014 08:44

Italian Mine fed more often when they were poorly. Hope you are ok.

Thank you for the herb information, I have loads in the garden that will start to die off. The chest freezer in the garage is looking a bit empty, which is not efficient, so that, plus some loaves of bread will help.

Hoping to get away with no winter coats too Smile

Alice - just wanted to say that a lot of your few posts really resonate with me ref shopping/planning/freezing! No waffling, completely understand where you are coming from. I tend to have specific ideas for 5 meals for the week, then plus a cheap meal, then maybe an easy weekend meal, but I will swap around as required re days if something comes up.

If I can't get to the specialist stores, then Asda do a great range of spices etc, cheap as chips. I think that I even got mine online and on offer. I have so many Indian type spices that they have to go in a carrier bag in another cupboard Smile

Parking for hospital today for DMIL, plus need a specific girth for dpony, which will not be cheap Sad
