Brrrr... Time for the central heating?

I know a few weeks ago lots of us were holding off switching the heating on. We're lucky enough to be able to light the fires in the livng rooms, but it's 2 degC out there right now, and even I think it's too cold in the rest of the house.

Plus, my husband has started putting the heating on constant every time I look the other way (all day yesterday, while the house was empty. grrr.) so I think it'll work out cheaper to have it on timer... 1 hour in the morning, 2 hours in the evening. Now I just to make sure that the radiators are switched off in empty rooms. Sigh.

How about the rest of you? Have you got the boiler fired up? Hot water bottles at the ready?

Yes, had heating on for a while now. It's on timed.

Have had heating on now and then since early October. If we had a fire in the living room then I might have put it off for a few weeks.

colleysmill · 19/11/2013 19:48

We popped ours on at the beginning of November (we have one of these fancy programmable thermostats which you can program different temps for different times and different days of the week) but this evening I've overridden it for the first time

Should have said, we are in London and have ours on from 7am to 9am and 4pm to 10pm.

Central Heating is set for 6.30-8.00am and 5.00pm-10pm. We've been using it most days since the beginning of November. There's a gas fire in the sitting room which we rarely use (Christmas if it's really cold) because it's expensive to run.

We don.t have central heating crappy old night storage heaters (rented flat ) so we hold off putting them on still managing without although have got the fleece blankets out !!

RevengeWiggle · 20/11/2013 06:37

I've had mine on for weeks, usually from 4-8 in the morning (we're up at 4!) and all evening but have needed it on quite a bit during the day as well lately. I'm having to cut back on other things in order to pay for it but I can't bear a cold house.

BrownSauceSandwich · 21/11/2013 08:14

Well, I'm not convinced that the stove is saving us money (no free supply of wood for us), but it has opened our eyes to how cold you can tolerate the rest of the house if one room is toasty and inviting. And in the rest of the house we're either doing stuff or buried under duvets. So three hours a day is enough take the edge off it. For now.

Revenge: there is no such thing as 4 in the morning. That's last night!

It's minus 2 or 3 outside at the moment and not going to rise above freezing any time soon. I'm having it on at 16 all day today.

NotintheMiddle · 22/11/2013 10:23

This is the first winter we've had central heating. Before, we just had a fire in the sitting room.

I am a SAHm so at home most days. We have it on all the time, but set to 17. Turn it down to 14 overnight. It was -4 last night.
