we are with SSE. i am not impressed with their 8% price rise so am looking to change supplier.

which of the switching websites are best?

I'd start with martin lewis

All the utility companies buy and sell in the same market, but nobody wants to go first because of the bad publicity. Now that SSE has jumped, the others will quickly follow, and good deals will be being pulled even now.

Maybe buy some shares in SSE and get a bit of the profits...

Is a fixed price tariff a good idea then?

We are with SSE too. I looked around this morning but was bothered because they seemed to underestimate our energy consumption quite a lot, not only that Martian Lewis was on TV and said the rest of the companies will follow suit with price rises in the coming weeks. With that in mind I have decided to stay with SSE but go for their 1 year fixed price deal, so we won't be affected by the rise. I was going to opt for the 2 year one, but they are using the tariff on Nov 15th to fix it to, which is the day it goes up.

Martin Lewis is NOT the best place to go. He gets paid by certain companies (sorry to all the fans).
Uswitch is probably the best as it is cometely impartial and will display the best deal for you.

afixed price tariff is sometimes a good idea, like a fixed rate mortgage.

It protects you against market rates moving one way, but if they move the other way you are not entitled to whinge.

I am currently on an EDF fix which enables me to dump it without penalty if market prices go down ha ha

get a fix with no exit penalty. Look at standing charge costs (if any) and the unit price. Find your actual unit consumption for an accurate comparison.

all the comparison sites get paid so use as many as possible.

prices do sometimes go down again in February but not as much as they go up in October. Don't believe Millibean, even if he gets elected you know what a politician's promises are worth. Not that the current lot are any better.

and of course the main thing is to use less.

Thanks all! We haven't lived here for more than a year but I still have a note of the initial meter readings so can get an accurate idea. :)

Will look into fixed deals with no penalties.

I tried Martin's site today and was very annoyed to find that it has been changed and doesn't work unless you tell it your name, address and email address, and accept their Ts&Cs so they can bombard you with spam mail forever. I refuse to do that.

I believe he sold it recently.
