I thought I was being really clever buying supermarket nappies and wipes (Morrison's/wilko/Asda all roughly the same price)

DS 2.7, DD 10 months - both in size 5's, we get the 2 packs of 40 for £10 and they along with 4 packs of wipes (51p a pack) generally last us a week

was just looking at subscribe and save on Amazon, cheapest price per nappy for that size works out at 13.5p where the ones we get are 12.5p - hadn't really thought about the cost per month or year but £50 a month sounds quite a lot and I know plenty of people who spend over £2 on a pack of wipes and goodness knows how much on nappies...I didn't realise it would bother me but I just hate that all of that money is basically going to end up on a landfill site!

I used cloth nappies for 7 months when DS was little (then his poo became horrendous and has been ever since and as I was pregnant I could no longer handle it) - if you use cloth nappies how many times a week do you put a washload on (I do as many as it takes to empty the basket, twice a week) how do you manage on the go? (we are out of the house a LOT and currently neither Child needs changing more than once every 3-4 hours unless they've pooed) and does it really save money?

sorry lots of questions there but I'm a bit Shock as I thought we were doing really well! this is probably just something to put up with until they're potty trained...isn't it?! thoughts please Grin

Tesco own brand, but take the club card vouchers, double them up, and use on baby and toddler - its all the time now.
Guess its only cheaper if you don't use the vouchers on anything that is more than 2x face value. We used to stock up on the baby events

I listened to a program about nappies on radio 4 where one of the contributors was a paediatrician who said she got her kids potty trained by putting them in bulky cloth nappies so they wanted to be rid of them.

Some councils still do £20-30 cashback if the health visitor signs a downloadable form to say you use cloth nappies, they just have to see the child in cloth nappies. It's on the councils websites if they do one or the refuse dept would know about it, keen as they are to reduce landfill.

I use cloth nappies for DS, I bought them for Dd nearly 3years ago so unsure now how much I spent but I think around £300. So now I only have the cost of liners (mothercare which I tear in half as they're large), electric and detergent/nappisan. I wash every third evening. I use Asda disposables (can't get small sizes in our Lidl) when out, though I sometimes take a spare cloth nappy with me. They're just as easy to change, but I can end up carrying a few bulky wet nappies home which if I'm carrying kit for a day out I'd rather not. At home I wash him with warm water and rags made from an old pair of PJs.

DD uses Lidl pull up pants for night time. Very good, never leak.

I started using cloth when ds was 10 weeks, bought some old motherease from some mums off gumtree, they are BRILL and they only cost me £90 for everything I need. Just take the next nappy I need out with me when we're out and about. Wash every three days, but we have lots of nappies so can get away with that! I think most people wash more often. I suggest cloth nappy tree online, and gumtree, for second hand nappies. Def worth a go! One of the best money saving decisions I've ever made, and now I am a real nappy convert, I love them.

Oh and reusable wipes, with just water, too. Or even disposable wipes that have accidentally been through the wash with the nappies, used again with water. Never had any nappy rash Grin

Morrisons and Sainsburys own super value nappies are fantastic. size 5, £1.41 a pack of 20. They are wonderful and plain cotton feeling rather than plastic sweaty horribleness. I use them on dd who has eczema and have had no problems.

I've recently gumtree-d some bumgenius nappies (preloved). I've had various no-shows for purchase, so if you're interested, do pm me.

oohdaddypig I'm the same, in theory there should only be 3-4 nappy changes each per day but DS in particular poos about 3-4 times a day some days. I tried again today to get him to go in the potty or on the toilet and he totally freaked out. he absolutely knows when he needs to go because he asks me to leave him alone for a bit while he has a poo but as yet he's never had one anywhere but in his nappy. I just don't think he's ready yet.

thanks doearwigsmakechutney but I have all the cloth nappies I need, I just don't think I've got the patience and energy needed to use them. as I say I used them for DS between 7 and 14 months but his poos got so bad I couldn't face it any more. not sure if it's his diet or what but they're still horrendous Envy - DD has only been weaned 4 months or so and hers bar more solid! yuk sorry

the Sainsbury's and Tesco nappies I got for £1.50ish were fab, the Morrison's ones I later found left a red rash each side of DS's bottom that's still there a few days later. shame because it's much closer to walk there!
