A slight hitch in the frugality plans for the confused household. Apparently, we are eligible for standard gas & electric meters in our new house, as the meters from the previous tenant are prepayment, but we must wait until 22nd October until new meters can be installed Shock This is with British Gas - who, incidentally, I have called 3 times since Saturday to try & get this set up. Does anybody have any tips re: being on prepayment meters, as I believe that this method of using energy is a lot more expensive than others? TIA

Welcome To all newbies, glad your DH is okay after the blowout onlysettle

I've decided not To do Christmas this year, too much else going on and I just don't have time. Do you think DDs will noticeWink.

Turns OH hasn't paid off his crédit cards like he told me, but he has moved the money To the 'right' account To be able To pay the CCHmm

Just buying yet moré food for his dogs. £17.50, plus a few quid on bread and chocolate.

SpangleMaker · 11/09/2013 16:51

Confused Grin at hearing baby's heartbeat. And belated congrats on getting the house, I remember from when I was on the July thread you were having a stressful time.

Congrats on the job Helena Grin

I've had a bit of frivolous spending in Muji today - DH wanted a certain type of filing box they do and a few extra organisational items may have found their way into my basket.

Otherwise I've been doing fairly well - saved £150 on my car insurance compared to the original quote, meal planned, made lunches and made DS a PE bag from material I already had. DH has picked up some Thomas engines DS wants from a charity shop so we'll save those for Christmas. I'd like to have a few NSDs but don't seem to be doing very well at those - there always seems to be something to pay for. I'll settle for some No Fritter Days instead Smile

roguepixie · 11/09/2013 17:03

Flowers, Wine & Cake for you helena - celebrate that promotion. Congrats. Smile

confusedofengland · 11/09/2013 17:52

Helena congrats on promotion Flowers. Sorry I missed that before!

ExasperatedSigh · 11/09/2013 18:36

Helena excellent work, congratulations!

confused how lovely to hear the baby's heartbeat - it's really in there Grin And yes, I meant to say congrats too on securing your house. The stress of tenant etc. is behind you, now you get to do the fun stuff.

Thanks for good wishes re. the cat. Afraid he is booked in for the final appointment tomorrow :( Steroids made him hungry but he can't keep anything down; add to that he can't rest, and it's not much of a life for a once active and boisterous boy. The vet told me straight that she doubted he would survive any surgical intervention so it really is all we can do, but I am still gutted.

Spent £4.63 in Tesco on the way back from karate, buying grapes, tubes of Smarties for the kids, reduced pork mince for tonight's tea and tonic for tonight's gin.

AdoraBell · 11/09/2013 18:36

Well done, Helena!

Slap me all on the wrist, I went to Costa £5.40
And got my boss, who never eats any lunch, a £20 Costa gift card as a thank you for all her support recently.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/09/2013 20:25

Oh exasperated poor you, I've done that final visit. They leave such a void.

Well done Helena. Zero hours contracts are the devils work.

Adora, yes we have a curtain pole. It's not up so dh will risk an indecent exposure charge until the weekend, and yes the DD will notice no Christmas.

I think with prepay meters you can change suppliers, British gas are very pricey, but changing takes 4-5 weeks ime. You can compare online and moneysavingexperts energy club is very good.

Well done Helena.

Congrats Helena! Well done!

Nsd4! Although I've only just come home from a work do. Only consolation is that boss man saw me at my best and boss is still there.. Well when I left he was there. So hopefully he now sees me in action rather than just hear about me! Night all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/09/2013 07:51

What's postage commission?

sportinguista · 12/09/2013 13:11

Ohhelpohnoitsa I made chutney as well last year mango from an Asda recipe which was fab but it does make a lot, I still have some even with giving some to my sister.

The shepherd's pie went down a treat although I didn't come clean to DH what the composition was until this morning, he hadn't noticed anything different!

Will be a spendy day but it's payday and bills need doing and also shopping. Have the £20 Ocado deal so am going to try that and combine with a mix of Aldi and Sharif's superstore!

daisychicken · 12/09/2013 13:21

{{{unmumsnetty hugs}}} for Exasperated

Have done a waitrose order for food today £66 - I did a mysupermarket comparison, was about £2 more than tesco but free delivery so worked out cheaper than tesco delivery or driving (plus bonus of not having to struggle with trolley/bags while feeling crap), I even went through shopping list & removed stuff so feeling quite saintly! Wink

Was shocked at price of some razor blades £16.xx for 6 Venus blades (compared at all stores) - my fave as give such a smooth shave but I can't justify the cost... will stick with my cheaper Gillette disposables and scratched legs.....

shortscotty · 12/09/2013 14:03

Sorry to hear about the kitty, Exasperated and great news on promotion Helena!
Spectacularly cocked up my end of month banking by paying a credit card twice, I didn't get email immediately confirming payment had gone through so panicked I had missed it so next day did it again, £90 out of the pot that wasn't there to start with. Crap. Then phone bill from holiday roaming, last month £91 thought great, all done then this time is £93. Hubby thinks its accurate but I am going to make him phone them to check it. I would but he's the main account holder, this means I now have to spend days nagging him to ring. Not best pleased. £45 at vet for stung paw and gentle reminder her vaccinations are not up to date either. Must really try to stash cash more as its all gone on the credit card
Going to pick up stuff for chutney tomorrow I think, all the tomatoes are sitting there and going to go bad if I don't get on. Also need to sort out shopping list for my Christmas cakes, I like to have them all made by end of September but this year struggling to motivate myself. I have managed better with meal planning though just not mastering the NSD at all.

roguepixie · 12/09/2013 15:17

£65.00 on suitcase for DH - he travels a lot for work and wanted a carry-on size.
£175.00 on food shopping Shock. I know. It's horrendous. And for the next 5 days it's just DS and I ShockBlush.

ExasperatedSigh · 12/09/2013 19:21

£89 on euthanasia and cremation costs :( I am so, so gutted. My lovely cat.

takeaway2 · 12/09/2013 19:41

Oh big hugs...!!! I cannot imagine. Hmm

Thingymajigs · 12/09/2013 19:42

So sorry to hear about your cat. Sad We have 3 ourselves and the thought of eventually losing them is heart breaking.

confusedofengland · 12/09/2013 19:44

Oh exasperated Sad You did the right thing, not letting your pet suffer, if that's any consolation Flowers

Spent £23 in Sainsbury's today for nappies, clothes horse, cheese, butter, cola & squash (was £34 but used vouchers plus Nectar points gained using Adpoints Smile). Then £15 in B&Q for paint to finish off nursery in new house - is a slight different shade as the first coat was a pot I found in the shed which was about 10 years old, but went on fine. But I think a top coat in a lighter shade should be OK ? Then £6 in McDonald's so boys could go to soft play, as DS1's playdate earlier was cancelled at last minute due to sickness of their dog Hmm. Plus £1.90 for DS1's school dinner.

Have put a few bits on local FB baby selling page, so will see if that yields anything. Whoever was asking about Ebay - I don't bother selling there any more, I find that postage costs & commission makes it prohibitive, plus if a buyer leaves you undeserved negative feedback, you have virtually no comeback . Gumtree, Preloved or local FB selling pages are good, plus buyer usually collects so no trips to post office.
