Good buys in Asda?

I have to take a trip next weekend, which will involve me going past an Asda en route. As I will have to do the week's grocery shopping anyway, it kinda makes sense to do that here as a quick pit stop.

Can those who know Asda give me a few pointers please?

What is good in Asda, particularly own brands? I will have space for a reasonable shop so can add store cupboard items etc, but I will also need to get lots of fruit, veg, fish and some bread/milk essentials for the week.

Are the clothes worth having a look at (especially for DD (6) in non-uniform school and sports mad!)?

And is there anything to avoid?

We visited an Asda yesterday to buy about three things and came away having spent £20!!! I think when you first visit a supermarket that isn't your usual one,you get seduced by the difference and are always likely to spend more than you anticipated, so beware!

Think the clothes for children are hit and miss are they are in all the supermarkets. It's a case of visiting regularly and seeing what you like - as with Primark really!

I seem to recall that Lovemoney did a comparison of own brand supermarket Christmas lunch items and Asda's 'basics' sage and onion stuffing came out best ;-). Forgot to look out for that yesterday though....

Some things are cheaper and some things aren't. If you are clued in about the price of your normal trolley items you will notice which ones are cheaper and should be snapped up. They currently have a lunchbox 'back to school' promo going on so a lot of those staples seemed cheaper than elsewhere.

Thanks Gazzalw, I usually buy in Euro, so will be checking exchange rate Friday to have a ready reckoner in my wallet.

Must have a look out for the stuffing, as I have no crumbs in the freezer and doing more stuffing things as we have a veggie in the house now (new au pair).

It's a superstore that we'll be passing (far end of its street), but I don't want to spend hours doing a full trawl of everything if its not worth it.
