A new thread to support those wishing to rein back their spending - come one, come all.

Pig cheek is used in sausage rolls, iirc.

You've been eating it for ages and not even realising.

economymode · 24/08/2012 13:53

Bargain of the day - 20p each for Baby John Lewis tops and pyjama bottoms. Not strictly a set, think the tops are meant to be daytime wear, but for 60p (2 tops and one set of trousers), they can be pyjamas!

ValiumQueen · 24/08/2012 13:57

I am sure I have been eating much worse that pig cheek. I have just never noticed it before Grin

ValiumQueen · 24/08/2012 13:58

economy good buy! Please say it was online

economymode · 24/08/2012 14:08

Sorry, forgot to say that it was a charity shop find, Valium. The first time in 16 months I've found any decent clothes for him in there though!

OP posts:
ValiumQueen · 24/08/2012 14:13

economy makes sense now! I love Charity Shops. Most of my kids clothes come from there. Come to think of it, most of my clothes come from there. Only DH gets new here Confused

Talking of DH, he just called me to say he has bought a sauté pan. No idea why. Apparently it was so cheap at £20. So NSD for me, but as usual DH has let the side down. I am not well enough to go to the post office today Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/08/2012 14:15

It's like the first time I sent dh shopping with no list, he came back with mince, two long sleeved cheap t shirts and an Ian Brown DVD.

DH isnt asked to go into supermarkets very often now, which was probably what he was aiming for.

ValiumQueen · 24/08/2012 16:12

Ha ha fluffy I should count my blessings then. It is a skillet and is lovely. I said the wok has to go and he has agreed. We never use it anyway.

We have Spar just opened today on the estate so he has taken the girls down there for the free samples. If he manages that it will be a miracle.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/08/2012 16:21

Valium it looks really nice meat, I will slow cook it I think.

I hate random DH purchases, especially when you are trying to watch the pennies. Mine is awful for buying bits for either his computer, his bike, or his car from ebay or other online places. Mind you, we have had nothing like that for a good few weeks now - maybe he is finally learning some sense!

AdoraBell · 24/08/2012 16:30

Ali

Yes, it is a great place to live if you have money, or a company paying your ex-pat packageWink, which we don't. My OH is independant. Most ex-pats here don't pay rent, bills, school fees, and I've heard them complain that the company doesn't cover the bill for text books as it's not a school "fee" Hmm.

economy
Thanks, I couldn't have not helped out, it was simple maths. We could afford it at that time (not a lot of money by UK standards) and they would have lost their mother unnecasseraly.

Anyway, my plan to get birthday presents today has been thwarted by DD1 still being off school. I predict an NSD here, at last.

ValiumQueen · 25/08/2012 08:18

adora is her leg broken or just badly sprained?

Mum2Fergus · 25/08/2012 10:43

Hey folks, busy busy at work so not checked in for a bit! Just realised Ive £55.73 left of my weekly budget this week...practically unheard of! Have milk and bread to get today but thats it...all in all, a good start!

ValiumQueen · 25/08/2012 11:06

Well done mum2 any tips?c

ValiumQueen · 25/08/2012 11:06

The c was courtesy of a quick 2yo

Mum2Fergus · 25/08/2012 11:22

Ive planned all meals around what I already had. What I needed to top up I got from local shop, avoiding rash buys at the supermarket. Thinking ahead for anything I needed from freezer meant things were ready for use...oh, and no takeaway!

ValiumQueen · 25/08/2012 13:03

I am trying to use up stuff in cupboards and freezer too.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/08/2012 18:01

Argh not a NSD today. We had promised DS1 lunch out when his glasses (first pair) were ready, so we went into town and out for lunch. I needed to stock up in Boots for our trip away in a couple of weeks, and DH needed a new dress shirt for his tux.
The real slapped wrist is that I have spent £100 on clothes that I don't strictly need. I got good discounts, otherwise I would have waited, but I am still a bit cross with myself.

ValiumQueen · 25/08/2012 18:06

Sounds like an expensive but good day alibaba

£1.86 today on posting my sick certificates to work. Sent it registered as I am somewhat lacking in trust.

I walked all the way to the post office pushing the buggy as well. Very proud of myself.

My task for this week is to make washable wipes and washable nappy liners. All with supplies I already have in.

AdoraBell · 26/08/2012 04:58

Valium

Just badly sprained, thanks for asking. She's now able to walk but suffers after a short while. she'll be back to school on Monday, but off sports for two weeks.

I had another NSD, OH spent money on DIY things and new bedding for DDs and DD1 replaced the mobile phone she broke. Tomorrow we're staying home so I predict another NSD.

ValiumQueen · 26/08/2012 07:52

adora at least a sprain is cheaper, although just as painful. Poor thing, still young ones recover easier.

economymode · 26/08/2012 08:16

A mixed day yesterday - lovely in that we didn't spend much money (£1.50 on paper) but also noticed that some kind soul had rammed into my car (front passenger side) and dented the wing, broken the indicator and scraped the paintwork. Could have been like that all week, but yesterday was the first time the front passenger door was used. My sister in law's partner is a bit of a car pro, but lives 90 miles away. I sent him a pic and he reckons it needs a new wing. Going to get a quote this morning and then let him know what it is so he can tell me if it's reasonable. If it's not, he'll do it, but it'll mean an overnighter in Bristol with the inlaws, which isn't actually a bad thing.

Glad to hear you had a good week, mum2fergus, keep it up!

OP posts:
ValiumQueen · 26/08/2012 09:14

economy be sure to figure in the 180 miles petrol, but if you offset that against a trip to inlaws then it may be better. It is horrible whe people drive off without leaving a note.

economymode · 26/08/2012 13:17

Yeah, if he does sort it, we'd do it when planning a visit anyway. Guy this am said it would beva write off if going through insurance, but he could do it for around £400 if paying myself. His business isn't vat registered, so labour is cheaper than usual. Need to wait until after the bh for a more exact quote as he'll know how much he can get a wing for then.

OP posts:
ValiumQueen · 26/08/2012 13:27

Isn't that illegal Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/08/2012 13:46

I dont think you have to register for vat if your turnover is under £70,000 a year. I could be wrong.
