What's the best way to donate outgrown school uniform to people who might need it?

Should I give to a charity shop or Salvation Army? Is there anything like the foodbank? I have lots of outgrown reception age stuff: grey trousers and polo shirts in lovely condition, but don't know how best to pass them on. I could freecycle, I know, but this will go to the fastest responder rather than someone in need.

Is there anyone you know who looks like they need it? Cos the easiest thing to do is just ask them direct, but casually. Otherwise speak to your local surestart centre, they will know the families who are struggling.

surestart yes thats a good idea or ask at your school ie the HT they will know which familes get free school meals etc and they may have a way they can pass them on?

Ponders · 22/05/2012 21:34

yes, surestart, or HV if you're still in touch with one?

otherwise speak to someone at your school, & offer to drop them off in the office if they know of a family who could use them

in fact assuming your school has PTA/Friends, you could suggest that they maintain a stock of good quality used uniform for the school to distribute as & when?

The school is probably the best place, seeing as it is the uniform that everyone there wears. At my DDs school the PTA routinely takes in outgrown uniform and sells it at events at a low price. It is very popular.

Dds school has a stall at the school fair with outgrown stuff on.

Gobsmacked that you have a reception aged child who's managed to keep their uniform in good condition!!! Best thing is probably to donate to a local charity shop or the school direct.

I would echo others and say surestart or the school too. Homestart also a place to consider too.

Most of the dc jumpers and cardis have come from donations that ive had from school or homestart.

I work in an infant school and we get given a lot. Some goes in spare clothes boxes in case of accidents but others are given away. We know the families hwo need it. It's very hard to ask the parents in need as some are very proud but most are really grateful. Sometimes if a child comes without a cardigan/jumper and it's a regular occurence I'll just give them one and write their name in it. Parents usually don't say anything, I guess some are grateful but embarassed.

I drop it into local charity shop
