Can you get a decent 7 seater for £1000?

Our car has packed up ( engine gone) and we have 4 dc's (5th due August). We need a 7 seater as we don't have a regular bus. We still owe my mum £2200 for the old car & our credit rating is poor at mo. My dh has lost his job & we are struggling to pay the bills.
If we don't get another car we won't be able to take the kids to school and I won't be able to get to work. If we don't pay the rent for a couple of months we will be able to raise about a £1000 hopefully.
Can you buy a decent 7 seater for that?
We think we can sell the car as a non runner

Ebay's the place. Should be able to pick up an old Renault espace or similar for around that price. Do you know a mechanic who could give it the once over?Good luck.

I think it's more important that you pay the rent so that the DC have a roof over their heads Hmm

Most schools provide a transport service if more than a mile away, is this an option? If less than a mile then within walking distance for school? I doubt you could get a road worthy 7 seater for that price.

It packed up on the M25. Took 6 hrs for us to get homeSad
It went to the mechanics ystdy. He said the engines defo gone.
I wouldnt normally consider the rent but we already told them we are struggling ( housing association) due to my husband not working.

We have just had another engine put in from a scrapyard, could you do that? Cost £250 + labour costs.

Mizu
Our car is a bit rarer apparently and three quotes have come up at around the grand mark!Sad
Will have to try & save up. The other 7 seaters don't seem to come close to ours.

Can you sell your existing car for scrap/spare parts to get some spare cash? Do the tyres have some good wear left. When my car packed up, (many moons ago) I bought an identical car and kept the original for spares, such as engine, tyres, even the exhaust.
Otherwise I would go down the council transport route. They should help you if you explain your situation. Very difficult and I'm really sorry.
An old Toyota Verso would be good because the engines go on forever.

As for work - is there anyone going the same route. You only need transport until baby 5 is here and then i'm assuming you'll have a few months off which would give you a bit more time to get some more money together.
Good luck and best wishes: www.7-seater-cars.co.uk.

Thanks aj27. I've seen that website before & it's a good site. Some good suggestions. I think I'm going to get it Sorn for now & try & save up as much as I can to get it fixed. Which will be at least £1000 but that car was perfect for us & other models don't seem to compare.

How far away is the school & workplace? Is there not a school closer to home?

My thought was that your DH takes DC to school (walking a few miles each way if necessary, since he's out of work & has time for now) & you buy a smaller car cheaper to run to get to work, assuming driving is the only way to get to your work.
Not many families with 5 children have 2 earners, anyway.
