regional public sector pay

Proposed changes to public sector pay rates (regional) are obscene and only for some workers eg nurses or teachers. Equal pay for equal work should be applied instead in the interests of fairness in both the public & private sectors and for doctors MPs and dentists too since we are apparently 'all in this together'. Why only for some public sector workers? These proposals are unjust and unfair.

These changes are expected in the forthcoming budget. THEY ARE DISCRIMINATORY AND UNJUST.

It makes sense to pay people according to merit, performance and also to take into account market rates for similar jobs in the industry and in the area. London weighting has been a recognised feature of salary calculations for a long time. Too-rigid payscales that only recognise length of service rather than ability do nothing either for the employee or the employer and, at worst, can encourage complacency and a 'Buggin's turn' mentality.

NHS is under 'Agenda for Change'. That was specifically done to nationalise PayScales and stop the postcode lottery.

London Weighting is added to posts though.

Can they legally do this? Give someone an 18% cut?

If it does happen it will make it worse for everyone in that area, private sector staff included. At the minute a private firm might offer a salary of 20k if that's what a similar job in the same town is earning in public sector.

But if that public sector job gets knocked down to 16k then I can't see the private job salary staying at 20k for long.

Yes but what happens when people move south for the money? Local economies are surely going to suffer.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2012 21:24

Yes local economies will suffer. People will leave, people will have less spending money. They won't spend as much, local business will shut, house prices will fall. Downwards spiral.

And then they'll cut wages some more as they'll say "oh look, housing is even cheaper now".

RandomMess · 18/03/2012 21:28

Believe me it will come to all public sector workers it's just taking a while.

Surely away from the south the economies will just spiral downwards?
