Shocked at the jump in food prices - just back from Sainsbos and Tesco...

Value and Basic tuna chunks jumped up from 45p to 66p in Tesco and 58p in Sainsburys. Last time I bought them must have been a couple of weeks ago so the rise is very recent. Also Tesco degradable nappy bags used to be 27p and they're 30p.

First time ever, I'm actually worried. WTF? Jeez, i remember6 years ago a tin of baked beans being 11p. Not it's 3 times that. How people are supposed to live???

it's shocking. I don't know how people are meant to survive.
We have a 33p packet of value biscuits to share for our dinner.

Just come back from first trip to Aldi. More impressed than I expected to be.

Good range of veg. Tinned kidney beans for 16p!!!! Tinned tomatoes were 49p, only bought one tin to try it as I'm a bit fussy about tinned tomatoes.

Chickens were cheap. Meat not so cheap. Think mince was £2.49 for 500g of lean mince. You can generally get 2 for £5 in most supermarkets I think. Though Aldi did have a cheaper, higer fat mince as well but I always get the lean stuff.

TheMonster · 20/11/2011 18:29

The world food section in Sainsbury's has things like kidney beans and chickpeas for less than their own brands.

Ponders · 20/11/2011 19:04

check the mince again, viva - I have a feeling it's c £2.49 for 900g (or thereabouts...I don't have their price database logged in my brain unfortunately Grin)

& their ordinary tinned toms are c 33p - you probably picked up the herby kind. The shelf edge labels are confusing - above or below??? - even as a regular I have bought the wrong ones by mistake Blush

Ponders · 20/11/2011 19:06

plus they have fantastic small beef joints, normally £5.99 (???) a kilo, possibly less atm, & really good quality

VivaLeBeaver · 20/11/2011 19:12

Now I think I must have gone atbthe wrong time. I got the last large chicken, there was mince, there were a couple of packs of beef strips and then there was gammon and bacon and some pork chops. No beef joints of any description. I'll check the price of mince again. Agree the prices are a bit confusing.

Hmmm... I went to Lidl on Friday. There were some items even slightly more expensive than the ones in other supermarkets. Some products were cheaper but not the ones I was after. I got decaf tea much cheaper and a loaf of bread , 55p and very tasty. Not completely convinced. (Plus I couldn't use the credit card as they don't accept them and I didn't get not itemised receipt.)

I did like the face creams though so stack up on them, ear buds, pads. I must make my way to Aldi then... An hour away .

Oh, almost forgot but they did have some decent wines very cheaply. I think I need to get one of those shopping trolleys as I went there without DD (and therefore the buggy) so couldn't carry any bottles.

Tesco had 12 fishfingers on offer, half price this week. They were £1.24. I've never paid £2.50 for 12 birds eye fishfingers in me life!!! And their hi juice cordial used to be 2 bottles for 2 quid, now it's £2.20. Robbing gits. It's crap, especially when you're on a tight budget. I'm growing more food next year!

GandTiceandaslice · 21/11/2011 09:53

Morrisons have sports biscuits on offer for half price. 50p. They have never been £1.

Got to be so careful with some of these so called offers.

I shop in Aldi for everything I can get in there. Then I tend to use Sainsburys.

Morrisons is my local, so I notice the prices, but Sainsburys tends to be cheaper on the cat food & stuff I can't get at Aldi.

nursenic · 21/11/2011 12:10

Yes, some 'offers'- Asda had one advertising three boxes of Frubes for £3. Individual cost? £1 each!
Tired....hungry.....on way home from work? Easy to misread, misinterpret or simply not see original price.
Waitrose usually sells them buy one get one free but original price higher. My DH loves them so we get through a ton...big kid.
Waitrose have three bone in rump steaks for a tenner and they're big; one cut in half fed two smaller girl-teen appetites. You can mix and match meat items for the same offer-minced beef, chicken portions, pork steaks and whole chicken.
Asda Pringles- a £1 each per tube. I stocked up for Christmas and lock them away in the shed!

Finding it really hard to buy individual tins of Whiskas supermeat catfood these days. i don't necessarily want to buy multi packs especially as they all seem to be jelly or gravy based which my cat dislikes.

GandTiceandaslice · 22/11/2011 12:25

The Morrisons basics curry sauce is now "down" to 25p now. Hmm

notcitrus · 22/11/2011 13:06

Sainsburys 'World Foods' or 'Ethnic Foods' or whatever is usually a lot cheaper than the identical stuff in the main aisles.
Morrisons is cheaper for most stuff than Sainsbos, but my local M is small and I need the bus to get there, whereas I have a large Sainsbos and a Lidl very near my house.
I try to go to Lidl once a week then Sainsbos for stuff I couldn't get. Seasonal veg is much cheaper, also longlife juice, lasagne, chocolate, biscuits, meat, fish fingers. But branded packets/jars are no cheaper and the wierd brands vary hugely. Do not buy Lidl's spaghetti hoops!

Tesco have gone up a lot in the last couple years - my usual online shop has gone from around £90 to £130 if I don't tweak it to get rid of suddenly expensive items. And all the 'special' offers seem to have become pointless - half price of double what it used to be, etc!

noddyholder · 22/11/2011 15:50

'nice' tinned tomatoes eg napolina used to be 80p and I would buy them if a recipe kind of needed better ones otherwise supermarket own ones for about 50p. Not teh fancy ones are £1.35!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the cheapy ones are 80p

PinotHolidaysAreComing · 22/11/2011 17:00

I use Lidl allllllll the time. Love it.

serin · 24/11/2011 00:00

Love Aldi, but a word of caution, the 4 bird roast thing is worse than vile!
