According to MySUpermarket, Sainsbury's was the cheapest for my weakly shop.

I am watching the pennies and fully expected to have to switch to ASDA. Have never really shopped there as there is not one near me. I always thought it was meant to be really cheap.

Was shocked when I did a comparision on MySupermarket and found that Sainsbury was the cheapest of all 4 major supermarkets for a weekly shop.

Am I missing something? Does it matter if the comparision is online.

Might be right. I usually shop at Sainsbury, but went to Tesco last week and was shocked at the total.

I love that it's your weakly shop. Now there's a Freudian slip Grin

But wouldn't it all be the nasty orange basic stuff? I speak as someone who got priced out eventually at Sainsbury's, and now uses Morrisons.

AppleAndBlackberry · 03/09/2010 19:38

Sometimes the substitutions aren't the cheapest option but mine has been cheaper from Sainsburys in the past too.

MissAnneElk · 03/09/2010 19:54

When you did the comparison were you shopping at sainsbury via mysupermarket? I find that whichever one I choose to use usually comes out cheapest. Probably because I will choose brands on offer which the other supermarkets won't necessarily have on offer. Also the substitutions are often more expensive. That sounds quite confused but I know what I mean.

drosophila · 03/09/2010 20:50

Miss Anne I think I know what you mean. I did shop initially in the Sainsbury site and I did swap to cheaper suggestions some of the time but not all. I think you need an MA to find the real cheap shop.

I went to Sainsburys today (recently have been shopping at Tesco) and was pleasantly surprised by how many offers there were. The end result was the cheapest weeks shopping I have managed since I started counting the pennies earlier this year. It wasnt all the basic stuff either as lots of good brands were reduced as well.

TrillianAstra · 04/09/2010 19:12

I don't trust MySupermarket to make suitable substitutions. If you were shopping entirely in name-branded goods then it could tell you which supermarket is the cheapest, but it is not clever enough to know whether to swap 400g of Waitrose Essentials chicken breast with 300g or 500g of Sainsburys basics or regular or Taste The Difference chicken.

I also find that when I shop online I adjust my planned meals according to what is on offer, which of course a comparison site can't do for you.

goingbacktowork · 04/09/2010 20:40

what is the difference between mysupermarket and moneysupermarket both mentioned on here or was that an error? Thanks

mizu · 08/09/2010 11:02

Sainsburys have lots of half price offers at the moment. Asda is cheaper generally.

androbbob · 01/10/2010 13:13

I used this recently and tesco were cheapest. I usually shop there as I dont like Asda, but Sainsbos and Ocado are usually 8 to 10 pounds more expensive.

I did try fiddling with the offers with another supermarket but Tesco was still cheapers. I need to try doing one with Sainsburys and seeing if the others are cheaper. Not convinced that it is only a gimmick and whichever one you start with will be the cheapest!!

justonemorethen · 27/10/2010 20:37

Go with the supermarket that targets your family best. I use Morrisons because as a single mum of one 6 year old, the BOGOF offers are a waste of food. Morrisons has loads of fruit and veg for 50p, fresh bread and you can re freeze all their fish..great as I need variety but only small amounts. Usually spend £45 a week.
Tesco's and Asda seem better for big families.I never spend less than £60 when I end up in there. Sad

fledtoscotland · 11/11/2010 00:34

IMHO Sainsburys are cheaper in the long run as a)their own value range is superior to the asda/tesco equivalent and b) they seem to have longer dates on meals for my elderly FIL so I only have to shop once a week for him instead of twice.

with their delivery you can choose to opt out of substitutes and my shop for family of 4 + FIL's ready meals only comes to about £70 including nappies/washing powder/cat food
