Child Fever lasting 5 days

My DC has Covid, test confirmed on Weds, so now on day 4/5. Fever is still 39.8 and cough is awful. Coping at home but at what point do you contact GP, and what can they do?? Are there any medications they would prescribe to help fight it?

myself and two youngest have recently had it. The youngest had a fever for 8 days and was ill for 10. We just managed at home.

Goodness that’s a long time with a fever. Hope you are on the mend now.

Fever still going strong, we are on day 6. Seeing the GP tomorrow but getting worried - I’ve never known a fever last this long. Can anyone reassure me until I get to the doctor??

It isn’t that unheard of as fever is the bodies response to fighting infection, it’s how the body tries to destroy it and attack by sending everything out of whack. Is there any background of asthma or anything? The GP is unlikely to be able to prescribe anything as it’s a virus and not a bacterial infection unless there’s breathing difficulties with it potentially going to a chest infection. If there isn’t and it’s just the temp, they’ll most likely just reccomend paracetamol and ibuprofen and rest and adequate fluids. I know it’s miserable for kids when they have a fever though

Greentomatoes21 · 02/09/2024 16:33

As long as temp is responding to calpol and ibuprofen, and if breathing is fine, I would say it'll fizzle out in the next couple of days. If either of the above isn't the case, then seek attention ASAP. Otherwise, try not to worry! I know it's hard! X

Yes responds quickly to both and breathing is fine - she has a persistent dry cough but otherwise ok, and fine in herself when fever settles. Thanks for the hand hold, appreciate it.

Still going with a high fever - onto day 7 now. Poor thing, utterly miserable! Saw the doctor yesterday, Strep and flu ruled out. Definitely just Covid.

Hope it breaks soon! It is so miserable for them (and you!)

Greentomatoes21 · 07/12/2024 07:40

Ressurecting this thread as my son the same now. Day 6 fever now and still going strong. Dr reassured it is viral, and I agree with that to be honest, but how long can I fever really linger?? When did your dc's eventually go?

CorsicaDreaming · 12/12/2024 00:29

@Greentomatoes21 - my DS11 is on day 7 of a fever with initial stiff neck, headache - and now dry cough and sore throat. And tonight being sick too.

Temp usually at 38.5 but as high as 40 at points. Been to GP twice now as even after Calpol / ibuprofen it was bouncing back to high fever in half hour. And I was especially worried about the stiff neck. But that's passed now and not meningitis according to GP. Still not great. Tested for covid twice and not coming up so not sure.

whoops2024 · 27/12/2024 17:01

@CorsicaDreaming

How's your child now?

My son is on day 5 of temperature. Ibuprofen settles it but then after a few hours it's back again. He's complaining of headache and stiff neck too when the fever comes back! Gp wasn't concerned with meningitis but I can't help but worry! He's on antibiotics (day 4) but still nothing is getting better 😞

I wonder what this stiff neck and high temp is?? GP said my son has tonsillitis but I'm confused with the pain in neck :(

CorsicaDreaming · 27/12/2024 17:08

@whoops2024 - hiya, oh it's been ridiculous here. He kind of got better but never well enough to get back to school. Then I came down with something (a fortnight after his) so I'm assuming something else... but I'm now on day five of antibiotics and oral steroids for a chest infection. And it's still not clearing up so I think I may need to go back to the doctor and check if I need another course of antibiotics. And now my son seems to be developing a really chesty cough so I'm worried I've now passed this one on to him. He's not actually stopped coughing since 4 December. All fairly rubbish. Think there are some really nasty viruses about and apparently the flu jab was only 35% successful this year in capturing the actual flu viruses that are about.

CorsicaDreaming · 27/12/2024 17:28

@whoops2024 - on the meningitis thing I raised it with both GPs I went to see with my son and they were sure it wasn't. Worth you checking up on images of the rash online though as it is very distinctive for meningitis. Non blanching. So if you see a red rash (can be v faint like pimples) but it does not fade when you press over it with a drinking glass, that is extremely worrying and I'd just go straight to A&E and get it checked absolutely no messing. It's rare but v serious and comes on late stage and needs v urgent treatment if so.

You probably know this but just wanted to say in case not. My mum (retired now) was a consultant paediatrician and this was always something she worries about if I ever mentioned stiff necks.

But it is v rare. I think my son's neck was just one of a multitude of aches he was getting from the virus.

All the best with it xx

Just resurrecting this thread as my kid is on day 6 of covid and still having some temp spikes (though much better than the first few days). He's utterly miserable poor thing. I wasn't sure when to see the Dr but it sounds like this can be a long / bad dose 😞

I'm sure it's covid as his taste is off and he's got pink eye which is a sign of a recent strain according to Google.

Greentomatoes21 · 16/01/2025 22:49

Poor thing, am sure he'll turn a corner soon. I think it is encouraging that he's overall a good bit better. That's exactly how my son was - dreadful the first few days but fever up and down after that so had a little bit of respite a times. It just gradually fizzled out thankfully. If in doubt though, seek medical advice.

egdehsdrawkcab · 19/01/2025 10:48

Just seeing these posts - I hope you are all feeling a little better today??

my DC fever lasted almost 10 days. Finally went back to school then came down with something else 4 days later too which developed into mild pneumonia - was awful!

pleased to say they finally made a full recovery, and was definitely Covid (but followed by pneumonia).

OP posts:
SleepDeprivedElf · 19/01/2025 16:19

Oh my goodness @egdehsdrawkcab your poor kiddo ending up with pneumonia!

My kid was roughly the same as @Greentomatoes21 and got better quite quickly at the 6 day mark after having a high fever the 5 days before and looking really poorly. I think he’ll go back to school tomorrow but maybe not after school club.

Thanks both of replying 💐
