Are people still testing for Covid even if they don’t have to for work/family members?

Just that really! I used to test for covid whenever I had any cold/feeling unwell symptoms but I’m wondering if people who don’t need to test for work or elderly/immunosuppressed loved ones are actually testing? I don’t work in a medical setting or care home, nor does my husband. Our eldest relative is 60 and well. We don’t have anyone immunosuppressed in our friends or family circle. My little girl has recently started at nursery and has a constant runny nose/sneezing/cough that she’s passing on to her baby sister and I think that’s what’s making me wonder if most people are testing still, as I’d be spending a fortune on tests in that case the way my little ones are picking things up. I’m just curious what others do.

No. Not necessary anymore as you still have to go to work/ school etc if well enough so doesn't really matter what you've got.

FishFlaked · 11/07/2024 16:12

Thank you to everyone that still tests.

bittertwisted · 11/07/2024 16:24

I did because I am rarely ill and I recognised the symptoms
DS2 was having an operation this week
DS3 on gold d of e all week camping
I was meant to be seeing my dad who is considered vulnerable, and wanted to give him the choice

Didn't want either of them to get it so I was able to send them to their dads

I have been shockingly ill, my worst bout of the 3 I have had. But I didn't transmit to anyone, and it was really strongly positive at first, then negative within 3 days. Maybe that is the vaccine

JC03745 · 11/07/2024 16:41

@JennyfromtheBlok but why do you want to know if it’s covid or not?

Because I can! When I had it and was starting to feel better, I was still testing positive. I didn't visit relatives or go to the shops. If I had a cold or other viral illness which I couldn't test for, I might have gone out when feeling better.

Thescarynun · 11/07/2024 16:48

It's not a bloody cold! I have Covid right now (confirmed by testing) and I'm so ill I can barely even walk, feel like I've been run over several times by a bus & I have a high temperature. I wish people would test, I was with someone who has infected me & they just said they had a 'mild cold'. I now can't go to an important event 😡

tinytemper66 · 11/07/2024 15:59

I tested for it last night. Felt rotten in work, like I had been hit by a bus...
It was negative.

I was like that on Tuesday, tested negative so was told to come into work. Tested again yesterday as I felt worse and a strong positive. Continuing to feel like shit.

I would absolutely hate to pass this on to my cv elderly mum.

twentysevendresses · 11/07/2024 16:55

I tested yesterday as I felt fucking AWFUL!! Completely floored me...weak, temperature of 39.1 and utterly exhausted. Cough, sore throat and headache like a motherfucker!

It was unsurprisingly a positive test, and now I know, I can get on with getting better 🤷‍♀️ It doesn't 'make a difference' to me in any way other than I WANT to know what illness I'm dealing with. Surely that's normal??

Same here, it boils my blood that so many people couldn’t give a shit about others.

My dh caught it off a work colleague who felt rough but kept quiet. Dh then passed it to me. I now can’t work as I’m a self employed PA to a disabled lady and won’t get paid and I can’t help my elderly father care for my mum who has dementia.

I couldn’t go to A&E this morning when my ds dislocated knee.

I also can’t celebrate my sisters birthday tomorrow.

And on top of it all…..I feel like a bag of crap!

Hope you feel soon.

Yes, but, I'm visiting an EMI home several times a weeks and I'd rather no pass on on.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/07/2024 17:02

I test as I like to know what's wrong with me and it does affect my behaviour in that I would probably still go out and about with a cold a lot more than with Covid, although I am more wary than I would have been 5 years ago. If I felt properly unwell though I would stay at home whatever it was .

I can see though why people wouldn't test if they don't get sick pay at work and also if you've got small children like the OP, they tend to get sniffles all the time .

HowardTJMoon · 11/07/2024 17:05

I did a month or two back when I felt like refried shit. The test was positive. I think I know who I caught it off at work, too, and I wish that selfish arsehole had tested and not come in to spread it around. It meant I missed going to a concert I'd been looking forward to for months.

DinnaeFashYersel · 11/07/2024 17:06

No.

If I'm unwell I stay in bed. When I feel better I crack on.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/07/2024 17:06

gojumpjump · 11/07/2024 14:52

No, at this point you're just testing positive for a cold

I’ve been in bed exhausted after a year since the ‘cold’

Only I’ve never been like this from a cold or flu before. Weird that.

Horsesontheloose · 11/07/2024 17:14

No, I don't test. Guidance for my workplace is to stay at home if you have a temperature otherwise it is treated as a cold. I did notice before I went on holiday that testing kits were out of stock so clearly people do test. I wouldn't visit a vulnerable person with any sort of virus though so a bit of common sense is required.

StripedPiggy · 11/07/2024 17:18

No. What on earth would be the point?

Theyearwas1973 · 11/07/2024 17:19

I went to my local Boots on Tuesday morning to buy a couple of tests for dh, the shelf was stacked with them. When I returned at 4pm to collect my mum’s prescription the shelf was empty so people are definitely testing because for some of us passing it on could be detrimental to our lo’s long term health but obviously some people don’t give a shit about others who suffer with less fortunate health.

CointreauVersial · 11/07/2024 17:24

No, I don't test, because it wouldn't alter my behaviour in any way. If I have any sort of cough/cold symptoms I stay at home and don't mix with anyone.

Xiaoxiong · 11/07/2024 17:33

I only tested so the GP would give me antibiotics (otherwise no point except to kill all my gut bacteria).

decionsdecisions62 · 11/07/2024 17:34

I don't think the tests are accurate for the virus versions now so I don't bother.

Well, I feel like crap and have tested positive. I don’t think you can get more accurate than that?

dotcombubble · 11/07/2024 17:40

Never tested never will, if you feel ill avoid other people, a bit like if you have flue.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/07/2024 17:54

I wish the carer that passed it on to mum had tested recently. Mum caught it and it's played havoc with her dementia - not only was she really ill, she got even more confused than ever and it was heartbreaking to see her sobbing over her lost family members every day.

So yeah, please test.

Backwoods57 · 11/07/2024 17:55

Don't see any need to test any more, COVID has become another common winter flu

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/07/2024 18:17

Yeah, @Backwoods57 not what I was thinking at 3 am when consoling my mum who was so weak she could hardly stand, wouldn't eat as her throat was so sore and was hallucinating that her dad was in the room (she's 83 and her dad died 40 years ago)
