Why Does Anyone Still Test

Sux2buthen · 23/01/2024 06:39

I'm not actually asking that, it's obvious to anyone why people still do of course.
I'm asking about the ridiculous faux confusion from many posters; the apparent shock that people are testing despite it being well publicised that people have it and the 'I don't know anyone that tests' or 'why are you testing?'
Don't want to test? Don't. But you're lying if you say you're confused or didn't know that others do.
Anyway, I find it annoying

OP posts:

For context my DH has long Covid. He’s 70 and diabetic, so I really don’t want him picking up another dose. Of course I don’t want it myself either. We wear masks in busy indoor settings and I have an air purifier in the room I use to see clients. That said, we no longer test because the science now shows that, not only are the tests unreliable for the variants they pick up, but there are sub-variants now that they don’t pick up. Doctors now advice that if your symptoms are consistent with Covid, assume you have Covid irrespective of what a test says 🤷‍♀️

mathanxiety · 23/01/2024 16:56

People expressing astonishment at others who test are the kind of people who like sneering at others, and if wasn't covid testing it would be something else they chose to sneer at.

RosemaryDill · 23/01/2024 17:01

I wouldn't say it's shocking but it's news to me that you can test anymore. Who's testing? Where do you get the tests from?

From a pharmacy.
I think this faux naivety is exactly what the OP means.

stresshead38 · 23/01/2024 17:07

Even worse than the faux confusion though are the people who do test but then just go about their lives as normal anyway. Why on earth did you bother testing if you're going to go out and about anyway?!

WhatNoRaisins · 23/01/2024 17:12

The tests are obviously there for sale in shops. I've easily noticed despite not being someone who buys them.

Faux naivety means lying in this case right? I haven't noticed tests for sale. Perhaps if you're not looking for them you don't notice. The same way I didn't register things for kids the way I do now that I have children.

I've never heard of anyone testing or buying tests for a long time.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/01/2024 17:18

I’ve got severe Long Covid because some fucker ‘couldn’t be bothered to test.

Havent been able to leave the house unaided for 6 months. Most days I’m in bed.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 17:20

Sux2buthen · 23/01/2024 16:32

Thank you for the proving of the point

What is your point? This is the first time I've heard covid testing being discussed for months on end.

If people have personal reasons they want to test for then crack on but calling people liars for expressing surprise is ridiculous. Of course people will be surprised. Most people just don't think about it anymore.

I've never noticed tests for sale. I thought a PP meant they had to send of a special request or buy them online or something.

What is the problem with people being oblivious to all this? That's what happens when things move on.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 17:21

Now I'm truly baffled. Do you mean you think everyone should be paying for tests when they feel unwell still?

SomethingSimple · 23/01/2024 17:24

I test. My family do to protect me too.
I had cancer that spread to my lungs. Lung was removed. If I get covid I need to act fast.
Many like me, relatively young, seemingly fit and well but who have to know what they are dealing with in its early stages.

WeeOrcadian · 23/01/2024 17:46

Because I work in an environment that contains a LOT of older people, I need to stay away if I test positive
Also, my dad is at risk of being severely unwell if I was to transmit it to him. I've already lost one close family member to COVID and I don't want to cause my Dad to be ill too.

You tell me.

2m with Long Covid. The chances of catching it increase with each infection. And we don’t have enough people to fill all the vacancies as so many are off sick.

So we’re in a situation which is only going to get worse. What do you think should happen?

Bargello · 23/01/2024 18:14

Faux naivety means lying in this case right? I haven't noticed tests for sale. Perhaps if you're not looking for them you don't notice. The same way I didn't register things for kids the way I do now that I have children.

I agree with this. When the NHS testing was being phased out the tests were prominently on display in the supermarkets and at the chemist. Now they're not, because demand has fallen. I presume that I could get some if I wanted in my large Asda or via Amazon, but I have never looked in the same way I haven't looked at nappies for 12 years.

It's not "faux naivety" to say you don't know people who are testing. Personally, I couldn't care less if people want to test, either regularly, or before some event. That is entirely up to them. What those people can't do is start calling those of us who are not testing and will not be buying tests "ignorant cunts".

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 18:18

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

What do I personally think should happen?

I think when anyone is sick with any virus they should stay off work and do their best to stay away from others.

I'm confident that the majority of people would agree.

Mumaway · 23/01/2024 18:21

MiddleagedBeachbum · 23/01/2024 07:10

Because it’s ridiculous! The tests have been proven time and again to be inaccurate - logical sense says when you show positive for an illness but no symptoms then something is seriously amiss 🙄

Even the daily fail readers know this!

When have they been proven to be inaccurate? They may continue to show positive after you stop being infectious, but I am not aware of false positives (which scientifically can't occur because the reagent will only react with the COVID specific proteins)

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 18:24

It wouldn't have occurred to me that you could get them in a supermarket. If someone said you can ask to purchase one in a chemist I would say "I hadn't noticed but that makes sense." But your local Asda? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Clearly there are still people who want them but I hadn't noticed.

As for the PP who said people not testing are ignorant cunts. Well, it's safe to say that this attitude is clearly from someone living in a bubble- not the majority of people who aren't testing anymore.

Mumaway · 23/01/2024 18:24

howlongtilsummer · 23/01/2024 13:51

Some countries have multi-tests which show whether it's flu/rsv/covid etc.

This is what happens if you are tested for COVID at hospital in UK usually (if you're ill and symptomatic as opposed to screening)

SauvignonBlanche · 23/01/2024 18:25

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 16:27

Pretence? I wouldn't say it's shocking but it's news to me that you can test anymore. Who's testing? Where do you get the tests from?

I've never heard of anyone testing for covid in a long time. Most people I know have been floored at various points this winter with horrendous bouts of some kind of flu and never ending cough. No one knows what they have. Are people buying tests from somewhere to find out if it's covid? What difference does it make to them when they find out it is or isn't covid?

Proved your point completely 🙄

This has just reminded me to order more, DH still gets them from the Gov.uk portal as he’s still immunosuppressed and still needs an anti viral infusion if he gets Covid.

Bargello · 23/01/2024 18:29

But most people are not entitled to free government tests, @SauvignonBlanche . If anyone in this house wanted a test, we'd have to buy them.

(I just googled, Asda do sell them, £2.50 each).

StaunchMomma · 23/01/2024 18:30

All the nay sayers prove is that they either don't need to be around vulnerable people or they just don't give a shit about them.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 18:31

@SauvignonBlanche

What does this even mean?

To borrow the phrase that keeps being trotted out on this thread, I think the "faux naivety" from posters who can't believe other people haven't noticed continued testing is ridiculous.

Don't you have the imagination to understand that for the vast majority of people covid and covid testing doesn't feature in their day to day lives anymore? Why are you taking that as a weird personal attack on you and your circumstances.

It's a good thing you can still get them if you want them. But plenty of people are just going about their lives and don't notice.

But people don’t. Obviously. I caught it at an event.

How different would my life be now if someone tested? I could be helping support my ASD daughter and help Dh instead of lying down all day too weak to move.

Bargello · 23/01/2024 18:34

Is it either/or though @StaunchMomma ? No, I don't need to be around vulnerable people.

Unfair to say that non-testers "don't give a shit" though, they just see Covid as the same as any other condition which existed before 2020. Most people know would stay at home if unwell, whatever they are unwell with. You really can't ask people to spend £2.50 a pop on a test every time they want to go to work or to Tesco just in case.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 18:35

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

But people don’t. Obviously. I caught it at an event.

You will continue to catch covid and every other virus going whether or not people test. An event means what? Hundreds of people? Thousands? People will be passing things on all the time while they are asymptomatic or not yet symptomatic.

All the average person can do is wash their hands and stay at home when they're sick. You can't ask more of the general population.

Geraldneedsasecondclassstamp · 23/01/2024 18:36

StaunchMomma · 23/01/2024 18:30
