Acid reflux

NC543210 · 17/12/2023 21:29

Hi all

I tested positive for covid earlier this month and had all the usual symptoms but terrible nausea and a feeling that something was stuck in my chest/throat.
I'm now negative but still have terrible indigestion. Lump/sick feeling and a new one my throat is so sore. Losing my voice and can feel the acid coming up.
I feel absolutely rotten.

Gp prescribed lansoprazole at the beginning but it just isn't helping. Nothing is.

Is this a thing? Anyone else?

I appreciate that anyone can get reflux at any time but this started the same day the other symptoms did.

I've got covid atm with a bit of indigestion but the first time I had covid I had really bad Indigestion. I took liquid gaviscon and that eased it although didn't completely eliminate it.
I do think covid can give indigestion symptoms

SM4713 · 17/12/2023 23:07

DH and I caught covid 6 weeks ago for the 1st time. We too both had indigestion. I normally take omeprazole anyways, but both DH and I needed to use gaviscon a few times- which we never normally do. I assumed it was covid related, but no one else has mentioned it until this thread! 🤔

Foxymoxy68 · 17/12/2023 23:14

When I had covid, acid reflux was one of my main issues. GP prescribed lansoprazole. It made no difference.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. The reflux was not covid related as it turned out.

Copperoliverbear · 17/12/2023 23:21

Ask for omeprezole they others don't work for me either, ask for a bottle of gaviscon too, until it passes.
Take one omeprezole in morning and gaviscon in the evening before bed, during the day too if needed but stick to the dose x

Copperoliverbear · 17/12/2023 23:23

I do think Covid can start off digestion problems too.

Tibbb · 17/12/2023 23:24

Acid reflux and the feeling of burning in my stomach (not to mention the utterly vile diarrhea) was one of the worse parts of when I had Covid. Luckily I could deal with it with Rennies, and when it was particularly bad, Nexium Esomeprazole. It went away after a week.

Not really sure what to advise other than it's the lingering after effects of Covid and will likely pass, but speak to your GP again if you're worried.

It seems that Covid affects people differently - some more on their chest and lungs, others in their digestive system.

piscofrisco · 22/12/2023 06:42

I have acid reflux anyway so was on olanseprole for it. Had Covid four weeks ago and since then the acid reflux has been off the charts bad. Yesterday my chest pain was so bad I thought I was having some sort of heart attack! And I have a constant sore throat /dry cough from it. I have been put on a different medicine-famatodin-but if anything it seems to be making it worse-so I'm going back to Nexum over Christmas and will go back to the dr asap afterwards. I've been taking Gaviscon but I think it counteracts the medication maybe?

NC543210 · 23/12/2023 14:08

I'm glad it's not just me in one way.
I'm really struggling

They've changed me over from lansoprazole to omeprazole double dose.
And gaviscon advanced after meals before bed and it isn't helping at all. My throat is so so so sore.
They're giving it another 2 weeks and if it's no better then I have to have an endoscopy. GP is now saying he think covid potentially triggered it

To the pp can take gaviscon but not within 2 hours of the ppi

Changing my diet helped the most with acid reflux.
I was on omeprazole but didn’t feel it helped much.

Triflelife · 13/01/2024 18:47

Having similar- have had a cough and coughing up mucus which is strange as haven’t had a runny nose. But the weirdest symptom is heartburn and almost like painful hiccups after eating a meal. Followed by intense nausea. Have covid tested and it’s negative. I’m getting scared to eat as I have a slight phobia of vomiting.

DownNative · 13/01/2024 19:00

@NC543210 dietary changes can help a lot with acid reflux, silent reflux (LPR) and GERD. These are different conditions.

You could try the Acid Watchers Diet by Dr J. Aviv to see of it helps. Avoid anything acidic and that has preservatives in, for example.

I manage my silent reflux through Diet alone and have seen my coughing stop as well as the feeling of a lump in throat aka nasal drip disappearing.

It's not a quick fix, BTW.

Sounds to me like you would benefit better from changing Diet. See suggestion above.

Triflelife · 13/01/2024 19:05

@DownNative thank you. Was yours brought on by a virus? Mine has come on very suddenly and only after this mucus cough started so wondering if it’s a symptom.

Triflelife · 13/01/2024 19:06

@DownNative also thank you for the suggestion. I’m going to look it up now

No, I believe mine was brought on by stress and I was diagnosed in 2016.

For most people reflux issues is mostly brought on by diet. Number 1 cause of it is carbonated drinks such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, carbonated water, etc.

A virus causing it is a new one on me.

No problem.

It's definitely not a quick fix, but it should help you in the long run.

Although I've had it since 2016, it's only more recently I've managed to follow the principles of acid watchers diet. I make everything from scratch - breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc.

Avoid caffeine too as well as alcohol. Those make all types of reflux worse.

DownNative · 13/01/2024 19:53

Also try not to eat two hours before bed and try to elevate yourself or the bed 45 degrees at the head.

Reflux can easily travel upwards at night.

Personally, I have one of those wedge pillows that does it for me.

WellWillWoll · 13/01/2024 20:31

I've been suffering so badly with acid reflux recently for the first time in my life. I was really ill over Christmas and new year too with nausea and dizziness. I did do a test. It it was negative (although when I had Covid before confirmed by PCP test, every lateral flow test I did was negative, so who knows?)

The absolute worst thing for me is the feeling that something is stuck in the back of my mouth, usually on the right hand side of my tongue. Sometimes more in my throat. It's horrible. I've had it since October. I've been told it could be globus, which is caused by GERD.

I'm sure it's covid related. Lots and lots of people I know have had it recently.

Triflelife · 13/01/2024 22:41

@WellWillWoll yes tonight it feels like I’ve got a pocket of air stuck in my throat but it’s making me feel nauseous

tanstaafl · 14/01/2024 09:02

I found two Rennies helped somewhat but as I mentioned earlier it was changing my diet ( not eating the reflux causing things at all ) that ‘cured’ the symptoms for me.
Off the top of my head,
Apples, Oranges, grapes
juice of the above,
carbonated drinks
anything with pastry
chocolate

i also had white wine on the list given to me by my consultant so I asked why just white. He said it meant alcohol in general.

two years later I still avoid the top 4. The last two I have in moderation.

DownNative · 14/01/2024 09:57

Bear in mind that some foods cause reflux in one patient but doesn't in another.

For example, @tanstaafl avoids apples and grapes but I can eat them no problem. I completely avoid chocolate whereas they don't.

It's trial and error.

Dark chocolate is said to be OK for reflux - organic. But milk and white chocolate are not.
