Aaargh! Covid has made chocolate taste yuck!

Cheer me up guys, I’m on day 4 of Covid, feel marginally less hideous and having favourite chocolate bar with tea. Noticed after a couple of bites that it’s not very nice!
normal food is tasting normal, just the chocolate that’s gone ‘off’.
Anyone else’s treat foods gone off for the duration.
This is a light hearted thread on the trials and tribulations of being in the throws of Covid , my sympathies if it’s wrecked your life.

One of my friends has the same sort of thing except lots and lots of things taste and smell really bad and she's finding it difficult to find things she can eat without feeling ill about it. She has had it for weeks and it has been put down as a long covid symptom (parosmia I think its called). Sounds horrible anyway

Ethelswith · 01/10/2023 18:38

I hope it doesn't last to long for you!

(Vast majority with this symptom are back to normal in a month or less, but for the unlucky minority, it's a long covid issue)

I had this symptom (only for a few days) when I had covid - tastes didn't become unpleasant, but they did become fugitive. First bite had a pale imitation of the normal taste, then it all vanished

Latenightreader · 01/10/2023 18:40

I lost all sense of smell and most taste with my first bout of covid (didn’t with the second a year later). Eating was a really strange experience for example I could feel the sensation of spice in a curry but no flavour, but it was quite handy because my bedside glass of water seemed perfectly fresh in the morning. I do remember being fed up because I wanted a treat and nothing tasted interesting. It eased off after a couple of weeks and after three it was back to normal. A friend sent me some things to try - very strong liquorice and some coffee - to test my tastebuds!

CyberCritical · 01/10/2023 19:00

Whenever I get anything that affects tastebuds like hayfever or a cold, the things that taste the best are acidy like pickled onions or salt and vinegar crisps. Sweet stuff feels sickly and makes my mouth feel fuzzy.

MaryJanesonabreak · 01/10/2023 19:03

Yes, I’ve noticed that the sweet stuff is no longer enjoyable, small bonus really. Pickled gherkins on the other hand…

Still can't drink coffee two years on. Sorry!

Normal chocolate tasting “right” never came back. I have to have the 70% stuff now. Normal chocolate tastes like they used slightly off milk to make it. Even the dark stuff.

Coffee came back except for a few notes, which are still MIA. So coffee is nice, but it doesn’t hit the spot in the way it used to.

And every so often I run around like a lunatic looking for the fire, cos there’s a strong smell of smoke. It’s like Ghost Smoke, I can smell it, my nervous system reacts so appropriately to the risk of nearby fire I can’t ignore it. But there’s nothing there.

This was from Covid in the summer of 2020.

PinkyPork · 01/10/2023 19:28

I had the same recently! Was bad for about 3 days then went back to normal over the next 3 days or so

Latenightreader · 01/10/2023 19:47

@AlienatedChildGrown I get the phantom burning too! I never associated it with covid, but it has only been in the last 2-3 years (summer 2020 bout too)…

TGGreen · 01/10/2023 20:56

I had covid in 2020...still can't smell many things and vast swathes of food still smell and taste awful.

FrankensteinCastle · 01/10/2023 21:09

DH also had this with coffee, he said it tasted like ash! And he loves coffee. His only lasted about 6 months, and now he can drink it again, but only with sugar.

Freetodowhatiwant · 01/10/2023 21:09

the taste thing is an incredibly weird symptom. I had it too: i hate to break it ti you but two years later my taste is still not the same!! I act like a toddler when someone puts sone cucumber near me, cringing and feeling sick, because since Covid it tastes so disgusting: like stagnant water. Peppers and watermelon also taste awful. Thankfully wine and chocolate are still the same as pre Covid. Such a strange virus though. Hope you get your chocolate taste back soon!

MaryJanesonabreak · 01/10/2023 23:22

I thought the wine tasted odd the other night and put it down to feeling extra tired. Now I’m suspicious that this virus is messing with the good stuff cos the leftover insipid veg curry and rice was fine.
@AlienatedChildGrown the phantom fire has haunted me for years, makes me leap out of bed in the middle of the night and rush around convinced I can smell smoke. In my last house it always seemed to originate in the attic.

I had Covid nearly 3 years ago now and I still cannot taste bacon. I could not taste chocolate for 18 months but its come back now.
