My dd 13 tested positive on Monday.

3 of her friends she had a sleepover with have all since been ill with coughing and sore throats. They tested negative.

Husband definitely has covid coughing with breathing difficulties. He has tested negative.

I have also felt Ill but tested negative.

Anyone else finding this. Are the over the counter tests no longer picking these new strains up!

I read that if the virus is more chest/throat based, the swab in the nose is unlikely to detect any virus there.

I found I went positive once I got nasal symptoms.

Covid isn’t the same as a common cold for clinically vulnerable people.

It is actually. , well flu , So many vulnerable people die from flu

If you're ill stay away from people as best you can. I currently have symptoms, feel awful , testing negative.

I'm being sensible with others

PassMeTheRedbull · 27/09/2023 11:16

My friend who is a nurse said that the old LFT aren't picking up the newer variants as well, if it's older test you are using.

QueenOfHiraeth · 27/09/2023 11:22

I had an awful cold/virus a few weeks back and, as I help care for an elderly relative and had some tests left over, thought I would check. Negative on day 2, positive on day 4, negative on day 5, unwell for 7-8 days overall so maybe lots of people with it are not getting the positive results.
This has reinforced my view of just avoid other people if feeling unwell regardless of whether it might be covid, cold or flu

PinkRoses1245 · 27/09/2023 11:24

No, because I'd never test. Mad anyone still does.

MoorlandWanderer · 27/09/2023 11:38

Lots of us are still testing @PinkRoses1245. Mad as it sounds in your experience of the world, we’re not all in the same boat. Many people still get free tests from the government, either due to their job or their own vulnerability.

Pandora55 · 27/09/2023 11:51

Mariposista · 27/09/2023 10:27

You don't need to be testing. If you feel unwell, you act accordingly. Take paracetamol, rest, fluids. How will knowing the name of the illness change anything. There are some horrible cold viruses that feel just as bad as covid.

Well my DH is on immune suppressants and became very unwell last time he had Covid. So he's tested so he can then access the anti viral meds that are advised.

I test for my job (nurse)

DD tests as she works in a hospital school.

I agree most people have absolutely no need to test. But quite a few of us still have to.

Poppercorn · 27/09/2023 12:34

Those saying we are testing so we can just give our illness a name... no, you're wrong.
Members of my household are isolating in their rooms with COVID right now so as to not give it to clinically vulnerable household members. One had a headache, and would usually go about their day after taking pain relief. But to protect the CV member, has tested and stayed away.

Why is this "mad"?! And why does it offend you when people are trying to protect others less fortunate than you?

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 27/09/2023 13:12

It's not mad @Poppercorn.

But again, this is giving your household false confidence that because it isn't covid, its fine to now be in contact with your vulnerable household member. Except lots of viruses start out with a headache, many of which could be dangerous to someone vulnerable. But because you've done a covid test, seen that it isn't that, you're all now assuming its fine to crack on. This is why I don't think its useful to test for just this one single virus. Either you need to be able to test for all, or just assume that if you don't feel 100%, you're better off keeping clear until you feel better.

Floribundum · 27/09/2023 13:33

I also test because if I've had covid I want to know I've had it, so if I get longer term symptoms I can give an accurate medical history to my GP.

If I could do a test that would say if I'd had flu or RSV or anything else I'd do that, too, just for the information, not to make a big deal of it.

Floribundum · 27/09/2023 13:42

I agree about a negative result not meaning it's definitely ok to mix with vulnerable people. On the other hand a positive result can make it a lot easier to resist social pressure to do something from people who won't see having a headache as enough of a reason to stay away.

Also, If I had no option but to work in an office with lots of people with cold symptoms, then I'd rather we were all testing for covid so some at least might end up staying home. Even if it didn't catch all the covid cases and even if some of the non-covid illnesses were also nasty, we'd all be a bit healthier for it.

Poppercorn · 27/09/2023 13:51

I don't think you read my post right @MaryEarpsTongue They tested positive and have stayed away.

Don't think isolating from family for 5 days due to a headache is sensible every time, so a test helps things there. Also not licking people's faces with a negative result - still being cautious! It's all about balance!

Atticustheaardvark · 27/09/2023 14:36

TooOldForThisNonsense · 27/09/2023 08:34

I tested negative initially when I had it in March. It was just like a mild cold. Only tested the next day as I had tests about to run out and it was positive. I won’t be testing again no matter what so if I ever get it again I won’t even know.

But presumably you stay away from others if you have Covid-like symptoms?

If you lived with a vulnerable person you would know that nobody just cracks on if it's not Covid you still keep away but knowing what it is helps with how long you keep distance and what anti virals you can get

SilverGlitterBaubles · 27/09/2023 18:06

Teen DC works in retail and was told to come to work if well enough even though they had tested positive that day. If this is what is happening generally then there is little chance of limiting the spread.

frenchiemummy92 · 01/10/2023 05:18

I had 3 faint positive tests last week. Faint but visible. No symptoms what so ever. Youngest has a horrible cough but tested negative.

I don't think many are actually testing unless showing symptoms.

Namechangedone · 01/10/2023 05:45

I tested positive last week on day 5 of being poorly. Had diarrhoea and awful body aches this time, was awful!

decionsdecisions62 · 01/10/2023 06:13

I'm I'll now. It doesn't feel like cold or flu. Had some tests in so tested but it's negative. I'm not sure how unreliable tests help one bit. It's probably better if they stopped the supply of them all and we all stay off if unwell. Plus more useful if they would advertise mask wearing when numbers look like they are increasing.

Nat6999 · 01/10/2023 06:13

My brother, ds & I have all been ill, sore throats, aching, temperature, headache, ds tested positive for 3 days, me & my brother haven't. My mouth is full of massive ulcers, I look like I've had lip fillers because my lips are so swollen. I feel like shit.

That sounds awful. I hope you get back in your feet soon.

I was just about to post about the same thing when I found this thread - a week now of feeling rotten, headache, shakes, smokers cough (I don't smoke!) weak, sore throat, dizzy... I have never had Covid but I imagine this is what it feels like! Testing negative most days but from yesterday my small DCs have started showing the same signs. If it's not Covid, then what the hell is it and how do I make it go away?? Confused

RuthW · 01/10/2023 06:35

Tests are not picking all cases up now. There is no need to test. They all have covid.

Lastchancechica · 01/10/2023 06:57

Well it’s absolutely ripping through here. I am on day 10. Tested positive on day 6. I had been ill for a week by then thinking I had a nasty cold, but it gets worse, significantly worse in my experience and lots of people are becoming seriously unwell. I could barely walk to the loo for days, so yes it’s an issue for the frail and vulnerable.

Everyone that can, should be vaccinated asap.
