Can we go on holiday?

Quenchs · 21/09/2023 06:57

Our toddler came home from school on Monday with a sickness bug, on Tuesday myself and my husband both started with it. We didn't just have sickness however, but gut wrenching stomach pains, full body aches, stiff necks and my husband had what he described as the worst headache of his life. I googled and found an article about that new covid strain and tested and we all came back positive. We've all stopped being sick, still feel achy and a bit rotten. We're flying abroad on Monday, and despite feeling gross we are worried about spreading it. However apparently we are fit to fly as it will have been 5 days+ since onset so we wouldn't actually have a claim to get our money back. The hope is if we do it's a 10 day holiday and we'll be hopefully fully feeling better for atleast a week of it, but there's a chance we won't and there's the plane. I found they were actually quite dismissive about it and my GP said it's rife at the moment and chances are someone on the plane will have it anyway Confused wwyd?

If you’re well enough to fly I’d go. There’s no restrictions now, you’re not obliged to isolate.

shakeitoffsis · 21/09/2023 07:01

Why have you tested? If you're going to go anyway then I wouldn't have tested, you've put yourself in this predicament unnecessarily.
Put it this way, I work in an nhs hospital and our guidance this week has changed, DO NOT TEST FOR COVID unless you work on a specific High risk ward, If you have symptoms and are unwell then stay off work but it now counts towards your triggers. Basically they want us to not know and spread it around the hospital unwillingly. Madness.

MuthaHubbard · 21/09/2023 07:01

I'd go - you are deemed fit to fly. You may all feel better by Monday as well. Maybe wear masks on plane?

Quenchs · 21/09/2023 07:07

Well I didn't test with the thought we'll go anyway, i tested with the thinking they'd let us maybe claim and use the money to book to go next week but then I was told no. Of course I don't want to spread anything but I also don't want to lose £3800 Sad

Would definitely wear a hospital grade mask. Just feel very conflicted.

I’d 100% go. No way would I waste nearly 4k.

shakeitoffsis · 21/09/2023 07:15

Absolutely go it's not even a question to me. Enjoy n

handyandie · 21/09/2023 07:18

If you all do a lateral flow and they are all negative you are good to go. If any of you are positive and you get on a flight that circulates air you risk giving the virus to others. Who knows what vulnerable people are on the plane. I am always astounded by the selfishness of others to literally put lives at risk for a holiday.

Blueey · 21/09/2023 07:19

Obviously go. Why did everyone trust the restrictions and stick to that guidance to the letter, but now the guidance has become less restrictive they don't? Either trust the government advice or don't, surely? It's maddeningly contradictory.

And stop testing. There have been nasty coronaviruses around forever. Take normal precautions to protect others that you would with literally any mild-moderate virus: wash hands regularly, tissues in bin etc.

Quenchs · 21/09/2023 07:20

I have to say I was staggered the GP saying there will most likely be others on the flight with it as it's so rife, I didn't expect to hear that from him as it did seem dismissive of the risks. Will do another LFT each day and see where we're at, but my LFTs were positive for around a month when I had it in the first wave?

dementedpixie · 21/09/2023 07:22

@handyandie there is no requirement for a negative test and OP can't claim on insurance for covid so would stand to lose all their money. Most people aren't testing so anyone on the flight could have it.

Anyone vulnerable will be vulnerable to any respiratory virus. There are always viruses constantly circulating. Covid-19 is actually one of the only ones we routinely vaccinate against. I'm sure anyone vulnerable who has decided to travel by air both knows the risks and has been vaccinated. Surely you're not saying the vaccines aren't effective in stopping spread

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 21/09/2023 07:23

I had it recently, only tested as I was supposed to be having contact with a high risk patient in hospital (though after testing positive I went downhill and was feeling pretty awful). But I was negative after three days so you're probably ok now! I'd definitely go!

lavendersbluedillydilly12 · 21/09/2023 07:25

Definitely go! Most people aren't even testing!

StillWantingADog · 21/09/2023 07:27

I’d def go assuming you’re all well
Enough to travel

people saying they’d cancel and lose £4K aren’t living in the real world. there are many many other infectious diseases circulating right now other than covid

pop a mask on and off you go

handyandie · 21/09/2023 07:32

@Blueey the vast majority of people have not been able to access vaccines for a long time and with the gastro symptoms it's likely OP has the new variant which has many mutations meaning vaccinations are unlikely to mean much these days. It may be legal to get on a flight knowing you are infected with Covid. But in the end it's pretty evil to know you have an infection that is killing vulnerable people and there is a mammoth amount in hospital right now and put them at risk.

But a holiday right? Who cares about little Timmy with no immune system on his way to a make a wish trip, OPs holiday is more important right. Screw the vulnerable for OPs holiday.

Bakedbeansandtoast · 21/09/2023 07:33

Absolutely go. I work in a care home - folks go off with a positive test but return to work on the sixth day whether they have a negative line or not.

ReviewingTheSituation · 21/09/2023 07:34

What's the point in doing a LFT each day? Waste of money (and tests) and makes no difference to anything really.

By the time you fly, you'll be 6 days after your positive test. Doing a test on that day doesn't tell you anything about how contagious you are, even if it's still showing positive, so there's no point.

It's probably kind to others to wear masks on the plane, but as your doctor said, there will almost certainly be others on the plane with it - either knowingly or in the dark.

Stop testing, focus on getting better (rest, fluids etc) and have a lovely holiday.

caggie3 · 21/09/2023 07:36

I mean it's beside the point but I don't think Little Timmy with no immune system would go on a plane with air circulating around just after schools have gone back, covid and colds and many other viruses are rife either at all or without taking precautions. On a flight of what, 100/200 people one of them is likely to have something. I don't think you'd find many people, who if feeling physically able to get on a flight and go would not go and waste £1000s of money when they have no legal obligation to, because of metaphorical situations.

mum11970 · 21/09/2023 07:36

Stop messing about with tests and just go

allthehops · 21/09/2023 07:36

I wouldn't cancel your holiday if you feel well enough to travel. With the way covid is at the moment the plane will be half full of people with it anyway, who aren't aware of it. Just wear a mask.

I've just come back off hols with a group, and they had "a head cold" spreading through the group during the week. I got symptoms on the last day and tested when I got home, it's covid. Majority aren't testing (I only did because I've a vulnerable family member and want to test negative before seeing them)

User19537876 · 21/09/2023 07:40

If you are well enough to travel of course you go, if the insurance is not covering it then are you happy to lose all your money if you don't.

BelindaBears · 21/09/2023 07:41

I’d go. You’re not still going to be infectious by next Monday and chances all you’ll all be recovered from feeling ill too.

AnyFucker · 21/09/2023 07:43

Go

gogomoto · 21/09/2023 07:44

It's only Thursday, you'll be fine by Monday

Quenchs · 21/09/2023 08:52

Thanks, I hope we are!
