Are people still isolating?

Been Googling like mad but everything seems so subjective online 😫

DH has felt awful all week and tested yesterday - positive. I’ve not been feeling great and symptoms have properly kicked in today - sore throat, cough, photosensitivity, fever - negative.

I have an incredibly important week at work coming up, including time-sensitive meetings that can’t be rescheduled. Obviously if I feel like I do today, I won’t be doing them, but if the symptoms settle, should I go? Tell anyone?

We've needed decent sick pay for eons.

JustAnotherRandom · 14/09/2023 14:20

@Oneisthree pretty short sighted advice though isn't it? Even if ethics weren't involved.

Yep

We work from home if ill with anything that could be contagious. Don’t isolate but also we try to avoid passing germs on.
Sickness absence levels have gone down so much since we did that.
Any coughs, colds etc kept away from the office. Covid definitely.

No, unless you're a medical consultant or similar! Would you announce you had a cold/your husband had the flu?

I would to be fair so my colleagues could decide if they wanted to be exposed to it

Quarantino · 14/09/2023 22:54

No. There is a reason they stopped giving out free tests and closed all the testing centres.

Ah yes, it was for the best interests of everyone's health, as I recall.

🙄

OP good that you let people know. I do think, if possible, there should be some way of optimising work arrangements (in general, if you are in a sector where that's possible) to avoid crunch points where physically meeting is the only way of doing things. It's hard to get out of old habits though.

10% of infections lead to long covid.

The number of people too sick is sky rocketing.

We are doomed if people don’t start trying to reduce infections (for themselves and others) and mitigate indoor spaces.

It isn’t going away. We need to live with it effectively, not ignore it / pretend it’s a cold.

Which means avoiding people when infectious / highly likely infectious.

Chiaseedling · 15/09/2023 17:06

I’ve got it now and 100% staying at home. If I feel better after 5 days I’ll go out otherwise it’s bed and sofa time.
It is rife now so why spread it more?

IHateWasps · 15/09/2023 17:19

Because not everyone has the luxury of staying at home! Many people cannot afford to pay their bills if they do so.

Gymmum82 · 15/09/2023 17:22

DH has it currently and he’s been working from home and staying home where possible. He did have to go to a shop and has needed to pick the children up from school.
Our company policy is that you are not allowed in to work for 5 days following a positive test so we still have to stay home

Ironically these people are the ones who would benefit from reduced incidence in the general population, but only act to increase it...

To avoid catching things and having to stay home sick (too ill to work, not just infectious) yourself, though, you really need there to be less ill people out and about in general.

So by all means point out that some people have no choice but to go out when infectious, but don't let that stand as a general excuse for people who could afford to stay home when ill but just don't want to.

I think it's polite to isolate. My mum got covid and isolated, I think that's the right thing to do. I think it's very rude to go around in public knowing you have covid.
But officially no you don't need to.

i’ve been isolating in the sense that i’ve not been out of the house since wednesday as i’ve felt too ill. not even up to wfh. even if i’d have felt ok i would have avoided my parents as they are in their 80s and dad has a heart condition and would have wfh as i don’t agree with spreading germs in the office if you can help it covid or anything else.
