Covid after post-vac myocarditis

Covid2023 · 11/05/2023 10:31

Just tested positive for Covid for the first time. Headache, exhausted, temp, sore throat clearing up.

Severe acute myocarditis post-MRNA in 2021, then an auto-immune reaction. Still on steroids (5mg) and colchicine. Taking ibuprofen as well to try to reduce headache/chills.

Is there anything I should do - into the third day of feeling ill.

Any recent experiences of Covid? When should it get better?

Not sure -I’m on my third day of Covid and I’ve had heart palpitations and a racing heart beat. Settled a bit now. Can you speak to your GP?

Bit different here but I had myocarditis with Covid round one (pre any vaccines as was March 2020), myocarditis at that point was pretty bad, still showed on scan 6 months later but was treated at home. At a time when nobody really has a clue. After my second Pfizer vaccine it returned but more mildly. Didn’t have a booster as advised against.

i have had Covid twice since, both times a long while after vaccines. First time which was omicron I was really pretty unwell for 10 days but nothing like the first Covid. The ‘Heart pain’ which you will know well returned about 10 days in and I was cautious for 6-8 weeks with activity but it wasn’t bad overall. I knew to rest and take anti inflammatories. Second time was in Feb this year. Much milder. I did take paxlovid which helped I’m sure. Slight myocarditis symptoms again about 10 days / 2 weeks in but mild. Back to usual activity and exercise at 3 weeks in.

Rest up and listen to your body. If you have a return of the pain my experience was the full aching feeling didn’t go anywhere / subsided and I had much less of thr sharp sort of stabbing pain. That’s what had worried me first time as that was intense. It was much less concerning the last two times. Pretty sure it’s an autoimmune response and I’m slightly susceptible but thankfully it’s been ok. I also had mild aching after flu like illness (not Covid) some time ago (between rounds of Covid!) so appears I’m sort of susceptible to it. I can’t take colchicine as was allergic so just good old ibuprofen for me! I also take low dose naltrexone which I think may help but can’t be sure.

it took me about 18 months to be able to exert myself without my heart hurting after myocarditis the first time. Each time I’ve had mild symptoms since it’s been much faster to clear. I still don’t do hardcore cardio mind you. My body seems no longer to like it / get palpitations etc so I just stay at moderate level (hill walks, swimming, biking) no sprinting!

If this is your first time with Covid realistically you may be rough for 10 days but overall most people seem over it by then. It’s not nice even though it’s milder. You have my full sympathy! I would ask GP for paxlovid if you can, they will likely refuse but you can try with your history. I was in the US when I took it.

Colchicine is primarily a gout-preventative med @Covid2023 , do you have kidney disease?

Covid2023 · 17/05/2023 17:12

Hope you are feeling much better @lissie123 I got a much fainter line five days after the strong positive. Feeling better day by day. Surprised how hard it hit for a summer illness, but have had plenty of worse ones during playgroup days.

Thanks so much for the reply @popsickle555 So sorry you have also had this to deal with. Seven days post a positive test and nine since symptoms started. Feeling much better and so far have none of the heartburn type pains. Though I don't think I will ever drop my guard after a very intense round of myocarditis. Taking ibu, as well as extra steroids and the colchicine. Was offered Paxlovid, but the Covid symptoms were dropping down fast. I wish I had taken Paxlovid, but am scared stupid by side effects now. A supplement that has helped reduce symptoms and coincided with some better results (on top of a lot of meds) was turmeric. I also had immuno-adsorption, which was unpleasant, but had a dramatic effect. Please can I ask - when you had a return of the heart pains with Covid, did you have a resolution of Covid symptoms before the new onset of heart pains?

@thing47 Luckily not and there have been checks for any damage. the colchicine was prescribed by a cardiologist. There is some debate around how effective it is, but it did help symptoms in my case.
