DS (16) getting worse after a week

DS2 is 16 and this is his first Covid infection, in fact the first in our household. He's been vaccinated, the 2nd vaccine was only about 10 weeks ago. DS1 (18) started symptoms at the same time and seems to be recovering. They got it from his dad, who is very unwell apparently, although we don't speak so I only heard this from DS2.

One week in and DH and I have miraculously managed to avoid it by staying separate from the boys. We are lucky to have 2 reception rooms and 2 bathrooms which we usually share, so the boys are exclusively using one of each, as are DH and I. We are all using masks on the landing walking between rooms and I am making meals and leaving them outside rooms. I realise if they were younger this would be difficult but at their ages it is feasible.

Today, a week after first symptoms, DS2 is now saying he is feeling worse again like he did in the first few days. The past couple of days he was starting to do GCSE revision and seemed a lot better. Now he says his throat hurts more again and he is coughing a lot and feels tired and wants to rest. He says the cough is from his sore throat, not in his chest, but also says he feels a bit of shortness of breath, not really bad, but about as bad as it was in the first few days. He's eating normally, has been all along.

I've looked on the NHS website and gone through all of the symptoms that could be of concern and there is nothing that seems to require calling the GP or 111. We have an oxygen monitor and he says it's 97%.

I'm just a bit worried as he seemed to be recovering and now doesn't seem to be. I wondered if anyone else's DC of similar ages had this issue and how long it took them to recover.

I think the spike portion of the illness kicks in around that time scale. Anti histamines may be worth a try to see if they improve symptoms.

Nowhere near as young as your DS but I started to feel better only to for it hit me again and start to feel worse . I think it's fairly common. Hope your DS feels better soon

I read that it’s normal to feel worse again after 7-10 days. That’s certainly how I found it last month.

With it becoming worse, and having shortness of breath, I’d be ringing for a chat. Especially as strep a is still doing the rounds. A secondary infection could be possible.

Thanks, for all the replies, he's no worse today, no temperature and eating normally. I think it's the coughing a lot that's the big issue and I've got him some cough medicine today for dry coughs, so hoping that might help.

Thanks for the info. A local friend whose DD is the same age and tested positive on the same day has said the same, was recovering and now feeling unwell again and sore throat getting worse.

Inhaling steam tends to work better than a lot of the cough syrups. Can just do it from a cup rather than a bowl
