Symptoms before positive test

My parents both have covid and I saw them before they tested positive. They didn't test positive until 2/3 days of niggling symptoms.

My sons gave both started with a runny nose and cough but tested negative for a few days.

Does this seem to be a common thing with new variants? Should I treat it like its covid to be safe?
What's your experience?

I tested positive Sunday for first time, am vaccinated.

I tested because I felt so dizzy and strange.

Both kids loaded with cold, runny noses, cough, negative.

I'm sick feeling, aching, sore head, dizzy, positive.

Had similar in Feb last year; tested positive a few days after symptoms started

HelloDaisy · 14/02/2023 12:38

I had a bad cold, runny nose, headache, aches etc, and tested positive after 5 days of that…

Runwayqueen · 14/02/2023 12:39

My DD tested positive on Sunday. She suddenly came on with a runny nose, sneezing etc on Saturday afternoon, only tested as we were having guests on Sunday afternoon.

I'm on day 3 of very heavy head, scratchy throat and painful sinuses, still no positive. I had this last time though, it took a week of symptoms to give a positive test. I've cancelled my plans this week.

Exhaustion, runny nose and sneezing. Temp for 1 night. Improved after 3 days.

Iceysuperslide · 14/02/2023 12:42

DH has tested positive today, he felt very tired on Friday, exhausted Saturday looked terrible slept almost all day and awful headache on Sunday, has perked up today. Tested as he was lecturing tomorrow so now cancelled. No snot or sneezing or sore throat, off his food.

I think I will be careful just to be safe then. It just seems too much of a coincidence . I hope all who have it feel better soon . I've had it 3 times and it seems different each time 😬

I think it’s always been a thing. Remember that most runny noses/cough won’t be covid.

annonymousse · 14/02/2023 13:09

Mum has felt unwell for a few days but my dad died on Saturday and we had an intense few days before as we were looking after him at home so we blamed it on emotional pain and shock at first but then she developed a continuous cough. We tested on Sunday and it was negative and then re-tested yesterday and got a strong positive.

NeverTooLateToSing · 14/02/2023 13:16

I’ve just tested positive for the first time. After three years, I thought I was immune, and that the boosters were bullet-proof!

I had had a scratchy throat and slight chestiness for a day or so. It was only when my body starting aching that I thought ‘hmm’ and did a test. Couldn’t believe when it was positive! My husband has the same symptoms, but is testing negative so far, so I don’t know when I caught it… 🤷🏻‍♀️

I tested positive for the first time 10 days ago. I was very tired, headachy and had a bit of a sore throat. Then my joints went achey. Runny nose started about Day 4.

Nat6999 · 14/02/2023 13:22

I had a sore throat & felt a bit achy, nothing out of the ordinary, what made me test was my mum had just come out of hospital & had complained everyone was coughing. I tested positive & tested my mum who was also positive. My mum was negative in a week, it took me 12 days to test negative.

Reastie · 14/02/2023 14:12

first time positive here - I tested on day 2 of symptoms and got a massive, strong positive straight away.

first day I had bit of a sore throat and feeling like I was maybe just about to get a cold or bug. Next morning I felt off and exhausted/achey so tested as was heading out to party and didn’t want to accidentally infect everyone. The rest of the family have positives but a lot fainter in the test than me and we all have varying degrees of severity. We all tested positive straight away though.

SamoyedOfDoom · 14/02/2023 15:45

Yes op. I started with symptoms on a Sunday, tested negative Monday and Tuesday even though I was feeling progressively worse, finally tested positive on the Thusrday. However, DH tested positive the day he first got symptoms.

Atissue123 · 14/02/2023 17:28

Anyone finding that the early symptoms sort of come in waves? I can't explain very well but I intermittently feel 'off' nausea, headache, aching...also have had runny nose and slight sore throat. I haven't tested yet (about to send DH to get some) but I remember this from the last time, I felt like this for a couple of days before it 'kicked in'. Is this a thing these 'waves of illness' or am I imagining it?

Lcw29 · 15/02/2023 04:52

Well so far it's either covid or a bug of sorts as my son now has diarrhoea and off his dinner last night. And I'm struggling to swallow as it's so painful in my throat and haveca pounding head. My son has also developed a cough. I'll test later today but either way there's some nasty viruses about.

A day of films at home for now ...and trying not to go nutty with 2 children at home who want to go out.haha
