Lungs irritated 2 months post Covid - is it worth seeing a Doctor?

I had Covid two months ago but my lungs still feel uncomfortable. My cough has nearly gone, but has been replaced by a rather odd feeling in my chest - irritation rather than pain - which has been hanging around for the last couple of weeks. Oddly enough it’s not constant (although it’s there most of the time) and the ‘sore’ feeling moves slightly to different areas of my chest, usually central.

Breathing is fine so rather puzzling. I don’t want to waste the Doctor’s and my time if this is just what healing feels like. Anyone else had something similar and how long did it take to go?

it’s worth seeing a Gp as mine has given me an asthma pump and it’s helped massively

Sorry pressed send too soon, my GP thinks I have long covid

Thanks @Olio sorry you are still not well. I can breathe fine, I don’t get out of breath it’s just sort of sore. Is your breathing OK?

Please get checked by your GP just to be on the safe side. Myocarditis (heart muscle inflammation) can cause chest pain.

Thanks @onedayiwillmissthis I have had quite bad Myocarditis in the past and it’s nothing like that thank goodness!

I have this too... GP wasn't too concerned and said would hopefully clear up... Hmm....

I'm now six months later... just rough throat and "sandpaper lungs" that comes and goes.... Love to know if anyone else and what's been offered/done...

I would definitely get it checked. A chest xray is normally easy for them to prescribe, is walk-in at Radiology (certainly round here), and takes minutes.... And can rule out loads of stuff.

I had covid in sept and have had lots of complications from it. My GPs have been great. At three weeks of solid coughing they checked my chest and said to come back if I was still coughing at about 6 weeks for bloods and chest xray.

(mine all then turned into a big throat/swallowing thing which is still bad, but I did have a chest x-ray as part of that)

I know you said your cough is nearly gone, but it's a long time.

It could just as easily be muscle strain, particularly if it's moving about? My throat is partly strain of coughing: my friend knackered her rib cage muscles from coughing for weeks with her version. They might even be able to refer to physio/pulmonary rehab/long covid service (which is a range of services, I think, including physio).

“Sandpaper lungs” is a good way of describing it. Now coming and going as my lungs are easily irritated and seems a bit random. Glad your GP wasn’t concerned.

I'd say it was worth getting checked by your GP now.

Post some kind of virus (was before covid) I had pleurisy which led to a pleural effusion. Breathing in felt like crinkling a crisp packet in my chest. Diagnosed by x-ray then CT. Mine was small enough to be treated with strong antibiotics and got reabsorbed. But bigger and it would have needed surgical drainage.

Webbedlife · 07/03/2023 13:22

Mine were like that when I had long Covid. I was also getting chest pains at that time. I was sent for an xray which was clear, and prescribed a salbutamol inhaler which helped somewhat but didn't really clear it completely.

I have this, along with shortness of breath if doing any strenuous exercise. The doctor said it was long covid and couldn't do much about it but said I was right to come as they always take chest pain seriously (I had a chest xray to rule other stuff out). He gave me some breathing exercises and recommended building the exercise up very slowly, which was slowly working until I got covid again!

I'd see the GP

We don't know very much about long covid, and I think it's worth being seen. Because they need to rule out anything that is cause for immediate concern. Also they might be able to offer symptomatic relief. Plus tell you if/when you need to be seen again (duration/type of symptoms) and maybe refer to a long covid clinic
