Loss of taste and smell

I’ve finally succumbed to Covid and today I’ve noticed my smell and taste has changed. They haven’t gone completely it’s definitely different. How long have people found the loss or changes have lasted? I tried googling but got worried when I read 18 months to 2 years so thought I’d ask for real life experience!

I lost mine for exactly 24 hours and then both taste and smell came back. It was very odd.

TFMinx · 01/02/2023 14:38

The caretaker at work caught Covid early on when it first started. He hasn't got his taste and smell back yet. He said it's the worst thing about it as he can't enjoy food anymore like he used to; he feels the textures in his mouth, but tastes nothing.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/02/2023 14:39

Fingers crossed I’m the same! Glad yours came back quickly, it’s a really weird feeling

I lost mine completely just as I was recovering. Took about 2 weeks to come back, but I've noticed isn't really back fully, some things are still muted or wonky.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/02/2023 12:49

I can taste sweet and salty and I could taste salmon last night but my tongue and mouth feel weird. I'm not sure how to describe it, I thought of numb but that's not right as I can feel my tongue. I don't like this!

I lost mine on Tuesday. It's not back but I do get a flicker of smell if I stick my nose almost in the cinnamon jar.
I've never eaten healthier either, I don't want to waste chocolate hob nobs if I can't tase them Hmm.
Got covid last weekend and appear to be fully recovered. 4 jabs, 1st time.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/02/2023 20:22

I could smell tonight's lasagne but I was disappointed I could only just about taste it!

I still feel full of cold and have horrendous coughing fits (one lasted so long today my computer screen timed out!) but I'm feeling brighter now and annoyed I've had to miss a night out!

Took about 2 weeks to start to come back. Then another couple for it to be completely normal again.

SoAndSoSaidSo · 03/02/2023 20:47

I lost both mine over a year ago when I had Covid. It took about 2-3 months to start coming back and is still not right. Some perfumes smell really awful.

WilsonMilson · 04/02/2023 19:44

Lost mine just after New Year. Took about 3 weeks to come back. Mostly fine now, 95% as still some things not quite there, but all good enjoyable as ever again and can smell. My sinuses felt really awful, dry and painful when my senses were gone. That’s much better too.

I scared myself reading so many horror stories online of people going months without smell and taste, or having parasomia where everything smells and tastes weird and putrid. I guess those are worst case, the people who recover quickly and fully don’t feel the need to post online, and are the vast majority.

Smell training really helped me. Also supplemented with b12, zinc chelate, liposomal vit c, vit d3 and k. Felt fine otherwise, minor aches, cold symptoms and chills.

WilsonMilson · 04/02/2023 19:44

*food, not good!

FenghuangHoyan · 04/02/2023 19:46

I did the same googling thing when I lost mine before Christmas and felt really scared. It came back within two days.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 04/02/2023 19:50

It’s SO strange! Mine lasted about 3 days (I had text book Covid symptoms one after the other - like it was a check list) and, like you, I could ‘sense’ salt but not really taste it. Similarly vinegar. Chips it was! I kept trying to smell strong scents (Chanel No5, White Linen, garlic etc) thinking ‘surely?!’ but no. Very strange and like being part of a live experiment.

Absolutely back to normal after the 3 or 4 days and no ‘hangover’ symptoms. This was January this year and it was my first time testing positive.

Babdoc · 04/02/2023 20:04

The first time I got Covid, 3 years ago, (badly enough to be hospitalised), my taste and smell went haywire for just a few days.
The second time I got it, last summer - after having been fully vaccinated - my smell went completely for about 2 weeks then slowly recovered fully.
I just wish the bloody long covid fatigue would improve as well, but after 3 years I doubt it will.

cravingtoblerone · 05/02/2023 09:14

About 7 days for me.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/02/2023 09:16

It's weird! I had a curry last night and could sense it rather than taste it. I can't smell the cat's food which is an advantage I suppose!

The other weird thing I have is the end of my tongue is red and sore and it feels strange, not numb but just not right.

Took 6 months for ds age 20 then to get his taste and smell mostly back a full year before he felt it was back to normal

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/02/2023 19:41

I've noticed that I can smell more today. I unwrapped a bar of Imperial Leather and although it was faint I could smell it so I'm hoping it's a good sign!

Two weeks. Mine completely went. As in I stuck my face in a jar of picked onions and couldn't smell a thing. Whisky I could sense from a tingle. Curry ...nothing

I read that if you 'imagine' the taste or smell then it helps to rebuild connections. Seemed to work. I also drank a lot of Whisky!

megletthesecond · 05/02/2023 19:51

It comes to something when smelling Imperial Leather is a win Grin.
I made risotto today and it tasted saltier than usual as it wasn't diluted by the ingredients.

Loafbeginsat60 · 05/02/2023 20:00

Well I had covid in 2021 and there are still things I can't smell and I can't stand the taste of chocolate and most crisps. It's the most upsetting thing ever as I LOVE chocolate (or did)

It's mainly bad smells I cannot smell so it could be worse I suppose!

whydoesitalwayshappentome · 05/02/2023 20:15

I had Covid for the first time last September. I lost both my taste and smell on about day three, a most peculiar sensation. My taste was back after four days but although my sense of smell has come back, it isn't quite as good. My favourite perfume smells like damp plants in the garden, and I have to use roll on deodorant because I don't like the smell of spray ones now.

megletthesecond · 10/02/2023 13:39

Day 10 of no real smell and taste here. I get hints of it but nothing efficient. My teens have to keep sniffing the milk for me.
I've decided this is karma for avoiding covid for all three years and not being too poorly with it Hmm.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/02/2023 18:05

My smell is back and my taste is getting there. The cough is a different matter, I've never had one like it. It's worse when I eat and drink and gets worse as the day goes on. My poor neighbours must have had enough of me and DH has been suggesting I sleep in the summer house!

My taste went in August last year and is still gone
