How long are you immune for?

Thinking out loud - I currently have covid and am miserable
Shielded for ages. Still wearing a mask food shopping and avoiding going out
6 vaccines and people being it's just a cold now and we have to live with it made me think I was being over cautious
Decided to socialise Christmas Day and got covid

Off work sick, feel fucking awful and had to make a load of phone calls to sort out anti virals which have brought their own lovely side effects

Just.. what am I meant to do? Risk covid, being off work sick and chasing anti virals every time I go out? Or do you stay immune for months?
I can cope living with it if was just cold symptoms but I got anti virals within 16hrs and still unable to work or do anything

In answer to your question- no one really knows for certain how long immunity lasts for or even if it lasts at all. I think it depends on which variants you’ve had and how robust your own immune system is.

It’s a difficult one for the immunocompromised because you run the very real risk of becoming a prisoner in your own home if you actually start over thinking about the prevalence of Covid and the other superbugs it seems to have spawned against the level of exposure you’re comfortable risking.

Not answering your question - but I am immunesuppressed and took Paxlovid and they were awful.

knocked the covid on the head but I felt so awful taking them. Exhausted, bad stomach, the taste!! And got so dizzy and light headed. But tested negative on my last day of them and went back to feeling normal straight away!

so hang in there, wishing you better!

I don't, no
Was going to order one but they were all showing as delivery in 5 days!

I'd get an oximeter anyway. I got one near the start of the pandemic, we used it out of interest when we had covid but all had good levels but think it's certainly worth having it handy.

We all got covid in early December (mildly) but have just learnt that someone I saw on New Years Day has since tested positive. I'm prepared for the thought that we might get it again soon.

@tobee the covid at home team delivered one today
Even when I feel breathless I'm ok and measuring 97-99
Have noticed my pulse rockets when I'm doing something so goes from 70 resting to 110

Came back to update in case anyone searches in future for CEV and antivirals

6 vaccines, neutropenic and on Xolair
Take vitamin D religiously after being severely deficient

Started with a sore throat, strong positive that evening
Anti virals the next day (within about 16hrs) for 5 days
Was negative LFT day 4 Shock
Symptoms were mostly fatigue, blocked nose, cough, breathless and feeling faint
Still under the covid at home team but sats have stayed over 97 the whole time and I'm less breathless today
Very achy legs tonight and insomnia but hoping this is the end of it
2 weeks off work. Conclusion is it definitely wasn't the most unwell I've been, flu was worse but I wouldn't like to repeat it thanks Grin

@Pelo22 Useful update thanks.
I tick similar boxes OP. 6 vaccines, neutropenic and on immune suppressing drugs.
My second covid experience was exactly like yours except I didn't take the anti virals. First experience was 1000 times worse and I was in hospital on oxygen for 8 days.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/01/2023 10:32

I don't think anyone is ever immune.

The vaccines just make the illness less serious and decrease the likelihood of hospitalisation and death.

Catching Covid means you will produce anti bodies to help fight another infection and same situations per vaccines

And I'm positive again with symptoms Sad guessing paxlovid rebound
