Covid & DD back to school

Hi just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on kids in school with covid? I get the impression that most people aren’t testing therefore there could easily be covid+ kids in school without knowing. We’ve all currently got covid and DD1 tested positive on Thursday so kept her off Thurs & Fri last week. Per government guidance, kids are only supposed to be off for 3 days after they test positive unless they’re still unwell. DD1 is asymptomatic so that means she should go back tomorrow but she’s still testing very positive!

It’s been a nightmare with all 4 of us quarantined for a week already, no childcare and me and DH somehow have to try and work this week 😭.

@Cassillero i don’t see the problem with the odd unauthorised absence. Sticks and stones may break my bones but the odd shitty email goes straight in the bin.

Ithoughtyouwere · 11/12/2022 21:27

Thanks for the thoughts. She had a mild temp before bed so obviously if still high in the morning she won’t go in. But may all be out my hands anyway as loads of schools in the area are closed tomorrow due to snow.

If possible, I'd keep her off. Less people she spreads to, the less risk of someone else having their plans / Christmas / job / health / education or worse ruined.

Perhaps. But I have no time for ridiculous school attendance policies (speaking as both a teacher and a parent). I have had issues with my son's school as his attendance was down after having covid. If my children need to stay home they will stay home. After a phone call they dropped the threats. I'm disappointed with my own school at the moment as they are doing 100% attendance rewards which is just stupid, particularly at the moment.

I am increasingly stroppy and militant in my old age (turning into my mother it seems ...) About the importance of doing the right thing even if there are awkward consequences.

I'm sorry your daughter has been so unwell. It's awful of the school to harass you in those circumstances.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 11/12/2022 22:36

If she's well, send her in.

Wouldn't your school treat it as unauthorised absence though? I think my daughters would, but I've already had a shitty email because her attendance is just over 90% due to her almost dying from quincy and then having time off for heart palpitations and ecgs, blood tests etc.

So sorry, that's awful. Hope she is doing better now. Wtf is the matter with some schools?!

cocktailclub · 12/12/2022 00:13

She's not symptomatic so follow guidance and send her in.
Especially as you will lose out financially if you don't. You're nit doing anything wrong. Plenty of kids go in and pass on common colds, flu, noro virus.

Twiglets1 · 12/12/2022 06:42

I work in a school and staff are told to stay off 5 days if testing positive for Covid, may be different for pupils though. But in my opinion it would be selfish to send her in before 5 days if she is still testing a strong positive. No one wants to catch it this close to Christmas! Surely she can just stay quietly at home, maybe the snow will decide that for you anyway.

Shinyandnew1 · 12/12/2022 06:59

I am hoping no parents of the children in my class send covid positive children in this week. If I catch covid for Christmas and can’t see my elderly parents for the third Christmas running, I will be devastated.

Yes, probably should have sent it straight to the recycle bin but sent an even shittier one back.

@Ithoughtyouwere hope your daughter feels better soon. I do think you'll be in the minority keeping your daughter off though. Not just for covid. Most schools seem to want you to send your sick children in, whatever the illness. My daughters school has said repeatedly if they are sick, to send them in, and the non medically trained school teachers will decide whether or not they are well enough to attend.

Holis · 12/12/2022 22:11

She needs to be in school unless she is actually ill

User963 · 13/12/2022 15:48

At DS's secondary school they don't even have to stay off for 3 days. They can come in if they test positive but feel well enough.
I think it is a tough one. Whilst she should stay off if it is a large school then there are undoubtedly lots of children with covid there who aren't testing and so I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make if she stays at home or now. It's probably still working its way through the school. Small school then maybe she could be patient zero and would be better to stay at home.

BCBird · 13/12/2022 15:53

Please keep her hime it the responsible thing to do. U say u will have not be able to work if you send her. School is not a babby sitting service. How would you feel if shd infects others? Not so.hsppy Christmas for them.

BCBird · 13/12/2022 15:55

Baby not babby😫

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 13/12/2022 16:25

I don't quite get how people can say "how would you feel if she infects other people" "it's selfish"

It's a high possibility OPs child caught this from another child or person in school also 🙃 and that child/person could of also infected others who potentially haven't followed guidelines or even tested at all and still gone to school, so what difference will this make really?!

OP has done the recommended guidelines. I do feel we can't do this forever and if you're well enough then just get on with it.
I'm over it personally. I don't think OP should be guilt tripped as such in to doing what she believes is right after following guidelines anyway.

SirMingeALot · 13/12/2022 17:28

It is odd how people still think, in December 2022, that you're actually going to know about who infects who. Covid is everywhere.
