If your DC has covid but well, is school expecting them in?

Haven’t really kept up with the guidance for schools. What’s the recent advice? If DC have tested positive, but not unwell ( slight runny noses only) do I keep them home or send to school? It seems so wrong to send them in for the first 5 days at least.
Out of interest, what’s the guidance for teachers at the moment? If they have covid are they expected to go into school and work?

Our school guidance is to treat like any other cold type illness and send in if they’re well enough. I think most people aren’t testing anyway so wouldn’t know either way.

Morph22010 · 13/11/2022 09:02

How do you know they have covid if they aren’t unwell? Most ppl I know aren’t testing anymore

LimeCheesecake · 13/11/2022 09:03

both my dcs schools would expect a child who was well enough to be in school to be in school - covid or not. But then people aren’t testing anymore so assume only those really sick are tested.

if it wasn’t covid, would you send them in?

MichaelAndEagle · 13/11/2022 09:03

Yes, treat like any other illness. Stay off if ill, otherwise should go in.

swirlypinky · 13/11/2022 09:05

Don't test then it's not covid. Its a cold

BCBird · 13/11/2022 09:07

I would ignore what the school expect a d keep them.off. if someone else contracts it from.your child they could be very ill. If one of the teachers is ill that will impact on hundreds of their pupils too. I know we don"t have to trst but I believe it's the responsible thing to do.

SpringRainbow · 13/11/2022 09:07

My kids school is very hot on attendance again and is constantly telling us we should send them in if they are well enough to be sent in.

They have started sending us attendance charts so we can compare the attendance rates of each of the classes.

TimeForMeToF1y · 13/11/2022 09:11

How do you know tbey have covid if they are well? Does your school still require regalar tests?

Mariposista · 13/11/2022 09:13

I don’t test my kids and make a judgement over whether they are well enough for school.

gogohmm · 13/11/2022 09:15

Who is testing now unless properly unwell?

mummyh2016 · 13/11/2022 09:17

My friends little boy tested positive and when she told the school they immediately marked him as absent for the next 3 days. This was only about a month ago.

I’m a teacher, we’ve got people in and teaching with Covid. My school was very clear that if we are well enough to work they expect us in and in front of a class!

AriettyHomily · 13/11/2022 09:29

If you're well enough you go in, same as anything else.

Other people can get very unwell from eg flu but we don't test for that.

I don't know anyone who is testing anymore.

Jules912 · 13/11/2022 09:46

They expect them to stay off for 3 days with a positive test, but don't specifically ask you to test so sure plenty are going in anyway.

Adca · 13/11/2022 09:50

I would keep your child at home. Vulnerable children/adults could pick up COVID from your child and it could have a more serious impact on them or they could take it home to loved ones etc.

It is difficult when guidelines aren't as strict but that would be my suggestion. Hope DC remains okay.

Lots of our parents are medics and they are testing.

We all tested after DS had his op cancelled as they advised us to. No sure why the hospital asked us all to test. Probably because we were accompanying him to hospital appointments.

My symptoms are quite unpleasant. Had covid twice before and never had this bad. Seems wrong to allow positive covid DC back into school even if they are well at the moment.

The NHS advice is that children isolate for 3 days and adults 5 days.

However this is just advice and really it’s all down to personal responsibility now.

You technically don’t have to do anything and no one can force you to do anything.

You would need to speak to your childrens school and ask them what their expectations are.

BooksAndHooks · 13/11/2022 11:34

The guidance is that you don’t test children unless advised by a medical professional. So they expect them in and question if you are testing.

TurquoiseBeach · 13/11/2022 17:12

I'm not sure what school are expecting but would not send mine in regardless if I knew they had covid.

SkeetyLola · 13/11/2022 17:15

I wouldn’t send them in. It’s wrong knowing that some people could get seriously Ill as a result, don’t care who disagrees.

Also the school “expecting” them shouldn’t somehow make you feel like you have to send them. Just tell the school they’re sick with covid, or tell them they’ve got a cold it really doesn’t matter. It’s not the schools place to come and check just how sick.

Iamnotthe1 · 13/11/2022 17:16

If you have tested and know that your child has covid then, yes, the school guidance is that the child should be off for 3 days. For school staff, it's 5.

The only time a child with covid should be in school is if you don't know they have covid.
