Did your sense of taste and smell ever come back?

If so, how long did it take and did anything help you? A friend of mine had covid back in March 2020 and her taste still hasn’t come back

Yes it is annoying. My oxygen sats are fine too weirdly. I am pregnant and have had checks, but was told everything is grand, both me and baby have enough oxygen. That maybe I can't get rid of the breathlessness due to the pregnancy. Which is ok, but it is stopping me exercising much and I feel like I am getting weaker when I should be feeling strong.

I will check that out thank you. I am definitely willing to try exercises!

@Snugglemonkey That must be horrible and worrying when pregnant.

I read something that says the feeling is like being at unaccustomed high altitude without acclimatisation. I'm fairly old and an ex smoker (gave up years ago) but have always had very good lung function, recovered from infections quickly and I'm finding this more difficult than expected.

Hope you feel better soon.

My dd11 had delta in nov 2021, no symptoms at all and felt fine - apart from loss of smell, she still cannot smell anything other than strong smells like vinegar etc

Thatboymum · 07/11/2022 02:25

Had the delta variant in September 2021 was very poorly and ended up in hospital now 14 months on and my smell is still nowhere to be seen, I can however smell a constant smell of what I think is onions or dog shit or burning, my taste is about 50% back but again has to be a really really strong taste to the food for me to taste it, it’s extremely depressing I have tried burning the orange , sniffing essential oils, Neti pot rinsing, steroids to no avail

freesoul12 · 07/11/2022 02:51

I had Covid in May 2021. My sense of smell has not returned fully.

I have also started suffering from heart palpitations at night time.I have experienced this, for the first time with Covid. It has also chosen to stayConfused

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 07/11/2022 02:57

It took me 3 months to start to smell a bit and 6 months to be fully recovered

RobLakessecondwife · 07/11/2022 10:28

Another poster on here said to supplement b12 and b vita in general, I’d urge everyone still struggling to look into this as the studies are very interesting on how COVID depletes the b vitamins resulting in b12 deficiency like symptoms. Worth a look.

Vits not vita sorry.

Hi all, I tested positive on Saturday, but had cold symptoms since Tuesday last week. was very poorly on Saturday with fever, cough and ditziness.
im feeling much better now but still congested and my smell and taste senses are gone! 😰 I can smell just about very strong smells like black pepper or chilly (was smelling my spices cupboard earlier) and can’t taste much but can just about taste lemons.
it’s strange I thought it’s not one of omicron symptoms?
will it come back? Or do I need to retrain myself or take supplements or something?

AntiqueCestChic · 07/11/2022 14:29

I had covid in April 2020. Lost taste and smell completely for many months. Did the scent training. I can taste and smell many things now but not everything. What I can taste or smell now is often strange and not how it used to smell or taste pre covid - if that makes sense? Only very strong tastes like curry or coffee smell like they did pre covid.

So I have some taste and smell but it's weird. Have kind of got used to it now though.

Apparently the smell/taste loss is indeed less common with omicron (I think I read 13% in my fevered state) and whether you get that aspect or not is down to a genetic mutation. My husband (CEV and still in hospital 5 weeks in) and me developed symptoms on the same day. His smell and taste have remained fine throughout.

I believe actively re educating your sense of smell with things like essential oils can work but don't know much about it, mine started to come back on its own. Hope yours will too.

I had Covid in August 2021 and my taste buds and smell have never return to what they were. I would say maybe about 75%

Purplehonesty2 · 09/11/2022 16:05

I can't smell bad smells really - which I don't suppose is the worst thing. I have to ask someone else to check if meat is off and I can't tell if someone has stunk the bathroom out!

Can't stand the smell of toast, coffee, cigarettes and to my horror chocolate tastes like burnt plastic. I don't like most crisps as they taste like oil.

I had Covid over a year ago so I suspect I'm stuck like this now.

Lavendersquare · 09/11/2022 16:19

I had covid in October 2021 and lost my sense of taste and smell. I had practically nothing for around 6 months but slowly I've started to be able to taste and smell somethings.

That said I don't think anything tastes how I remember and some things that I loved eg.fresh strawberries, chocolate and wine, I now simply cannot stand.

Bizarrely, I now love anything citrus flavoured so eat copious amounts of Terry's chocolate oranges as they are quite enjoyable.

IamlividandfumingIam · 10/11/2022 11:00

I think I've adjusted to the change and now don't know if everything tastes normal or not. I also get phantom taste and smell. Covid positive 6 months ago, was not hospitalised but very ill and am classed CEV.

Ugh I'm the opposite, can smell no end of bad smells but no nice ones! Is it a survival thing I wondered, at least I can smell gas, poo and off mouldy smells 😅

totallyaddictedtocheese · 10/11/2022 11:12

I had covid over a year ago in September 2021 and my sense of smell has only just started to return. Everything is quite faint and I struggle to smell bad smells so don't always realise when my baby has a dirty nappy, which is a pain. I'm hoping it continues to return and eventually I'll be back to normal. I wasn't even that poorly when I had covid so didn't expect to still be like this over a year later.

Rockschooldropout · 16/11/2022 22:33

I tested positive 4 weeks ago - taste and smell went on about day 5 . My taste still isn’t back properly but I started being able to get a slight whiff of anything perfumey about two weeks ago . Stuck with terrible breathlessness though still 😰

LakeFlyPie · 17/11/2022 23:19

I had covid in April 2020 with complete anosmia for about a month. Previously had a very acute sense of smell which hasn't recovered fully, seems to wax and wane now

CristinaNov182 · 24/11/2022 21:15

Had it twice, first time loss of about 80%, 2nd time 100%loss of smell, 90-100%taste.
both came back within a week or two.

I took NAC, vit D, vit C and zinc (can Google studies for all of these)

I’ve also tested my vit D levels every three months since the pandemic started. To begin with I was severely deficient (with no symptoms, only tested bc of the pandemic, private) and the gp gave me 8x normal dose of 10 for 3 months to get it back to normal

first time I suppose bc of the low vit D, though I was already in treatment, but not back to normal levels, covid floored me the first day, had a rough 3-4 days after and then in recovery, but still weak.

I kept checking my oxygen levels too with the oxymeters, had them at 98-99% until the 2nd or 3rd day when they went to 96-97. (Below 95 you need to call gp or 111 and they might refer you to hospital, and any 1 under is direct hospitalisation)

im still testing my vit D levels, there are close to 100, so very good. The 2nd time I got covid I wouldn’t have known without the loss of smell and taste, only had a stuffy nose.

od recommend everyone checks their vit d levels, it might help in recovery or if you get it again. You might have mos symptoms like me if you’re deficient.

ah, after the first covid my levels who were improving, dropped again, so covid ate into that.

mrsnjw · 25/11/2022 07:30

September 2021 still hardly any smell but can taste. It's a bit rubbish really!!

spiderlight · 28/11/2022 11:53

I had Covid (delta) last November. Smell and taste took about 3-4 weeks to come back and are still not quite the same. Tea (my favourite thing in the world 😭) still doesn't taste right, and I seem to be much more sensitive to the chemical smells in things like washing powder, deodorant and aftershave, which all have a horrible undertone now.

tobee · 28/11/2022 20:36

I've got covid first time. I was wondering about my sense of taste. I had dinner just now and had salad with it and raw onions and garlic etc. I'm not sure of my taste is gone though. Can anyone direct me to links about it? These things were all over the media etc a few months ago.

The weird thing about my dinner tonight was I felt I couldn't taste the raw onion or raw garlic but could taste the cucumber very clearly. Which you would have thought was the most bland. Im not sure if Im imagining it.

How does it affects your eating of food over time? I still have an appetite. Dh got a positive a few days before me and last night said he couldn't taste any of it but still ate it all.

Just interested really.

SlashBeef · 02/12/2022 09:16

Weirdly my dad can taste but not smell! It's been 18 months.

xxyzz · 09/12/2022 22:19

I lost my sense of taste and smell in March 2020. Taste came back after a couple of weeks, smell never come fully back, probably 70%?

Like others here, I still can’t smell bleach or strong unpleasant smells. Sure it is genetic, as my brother's symptoms are identical.

It's bearable. Just gone down with Covid again though, so watching nervously to see if I lose my sense of smell and taste again...

iabvvu · 10/12/2022 00:39

Same boat as a lot of others here. Had covid for the first time in Dec 2020 - completely lost taste and smell at the time, taste returned mostly to normal but smell never fully recovered. I can only smell very strong things and often get smells mixed up - I.e. I think I'm smelling something different or I can't tell if something smells good or bad. I get phantom smells in phases, went through a few weeks of smelling burnt oil everywhere, at the moment it's urine which is great
